The Afrika Korps and their legendary commander Erwin Rommel have gone down in military history for their exploits during the North African Campaign. The Afrika Korps were involved in many famous engagements including the battles at Tobruk, Gazala and El Alamein until their eventual surrender in May 1943.

We reviewed a set of Revell's 'German Infantry Africa Corps WWII' a few years ago, so when this set arrived I assumed it was a re-release of that edition. As it happens, this is a re-release of the old Matchbox set in the slightly smaller scale of 1:76. The set includes 50 figures spread across two sprues of caramel coloured flexible plastic. No assembly is required except for slotting the two parts of the mortar together.

The figures have remarkably little flash, so clean up should be quick and easy. For the most part the mouldings are pretty good. Details such as the folds in clothing and weapons are nicely represented. They're not on a par with modern, multi-part injection moulded figures from the likes of Dragon in this scale, but they are nevertheless pretty reasonable. A number of different figures are provided, including static, running and prone infantry, machine gun teams, a mortar team and some commander figures.

Conclusion

This set doesn't represent the best or most modern figures available in this scale, but they are still pretty reasonable. Overall this is a welcome trip down memory lane, as well as reasonable value for money.
