1/48: 2001 Orion from Revell?

It's just an idea from someone, it does not mean that revell consider to produce it.

And it won't go far with 18 votes...

You can also post whatever you want.

rrrrrrrrrrrrright. It was my idea ;-) As well as some others.

Sorry I was abroad for two weeks so I can only reply here now. The 22'' Eagle has 1181 votes by now and is on place 6 regarding votes - which really amazes me. Though it amazes me even more that the Disney Nautilus (another idea from me) is on second place!

But I doubt very much that Revell will release either. On the other hand Revell has plenty of SciFi kits, so if any main stream company will release a SciFi kit my bet would be on Revell. They even released a new tool original Enterprise after all.

I like the idea of the Revell page though - but I think it is too slow and not very well done - there are many ideas listed more than once and it is tedious to scroll through all suggestion. I suppose Revell did not expect this traffic and the number of ideas.

I've put several ideas up as well and though one is doing well I don't think there's much chance of any of them making it through to production but I'm guessing that it's giving Revell a rough idea of what appeals to folks at this time. I agree it's not a particularly user friendly site being slow to load, (though you can navigate to a particular subject with the search function it all seems a bit elephantine). As mentioned there are multiples of the same subject, and it makes me chuckle that you can vote for your own suggestions on a daily basis !! though in fairness it would take some time to make a real difference, call a few friends maybe, (before anyone asks I did try once to see what would happen).

Must admit I like the idea of the N-1 and not having to fork out for the pricey Real Space resin jobbie.....or struggle with the free paper one !

I fully agree. The site is horrible - it appears to me that Revell did not expect the traffic and number of suggestions. I hope they will rework the page but do not expect it to happen - same as I hope they will get infuenced by some of the suggestions but I do not expect it to happen ;-)

But what I do think is: This site has become quite popular and surely other manufacturers will have a look there too. I personally hope Airfix will do so as I would like some of my suggestions to be done by Airfix rather than Revell (the cars for example as I prefer the 1:32 scale so I can convert them to slot racers).

Oh aren't we a load of optimist's wait and see we may be surprised

 Actually, I sometimes think that pessimism is the best (and most realistic) policy!! If you're right, and your cherished idea doesn't materialise then at least you expected it. If you're wrong, it's a bonus!

Just noted: revell did an update to the site so it now loads more quickly. But: The Firefly which was ranking first regarding votes has vanished - anyone an idea why?

Perhaps it reached some threshold for votes, so they knew it was popular enough. Just a guess though.

The person who suggested it could also have deleted it, you have that option if you make the suggestion

I'd have thought it more likely they would take down any suggestions that hadn't reached a certain threshold after a particular time as they would be the ones with little interest.

Dear Revell friends

A few days ago we had to unfortunately remove the idea of Serenity (Firefly) from the platform.

The copyright owner has informed us that this product has already been licensed and asked us to remove the article/idea from the website.

Please take distance from it further submitted this idea. If you have a question, write us at [email protected]

The problem with any TV or film based science fiction subjects is that there are going to be licensing issues surrounding the production of models, kits and toys - especially of the more modern films and TV series.

Having modellers randomly suggesting this or that sci-fi spacecraft will result in what has happened.

There would be no issues per-see with the 2001 models, no copyright was taken out on the models. However other movies and TV series like Anderson ones yes. I BelieveThe Kubrick estate have clarified the situation and have no qualms with models being produced, after all the Airfix ad Moebius Clipper are not licensed. However, Revell (or any one else come to that) wanted brand it and tie it to the film, then yes the would need to apply for a branding license from MGM/TCM.

For example if Discovery was renamed Long Range Discoverer and the Aries called a Moon Taxi, it would be fine but abviously it does not have the movie tie in kudos.

If the Clipper was produced it would need a license to use the Pan- Am 'meatball' and type face, hence why it was omitted from the Moebius kit.

The original boxing of the Airfix kit made no mention of the film "2001" at all - so I think they were treading a bit carefully in case MGM came after them for any reason

The 1980s release dropped the Pan Am decals.

It was in 1993 that the kit reappeared - this time with both Pan Am and the ficticious markings from the 1980s release.

It's is clear Airfix did not have any proper access to any information and to all intents and purposes it's their best guess from what they saw the screen and in my opinion it resembles a lump of soap. Where as the Aurora are known to have had access to MGM/Kubrick's Art Department drawings (and possibly the filming miniatures) for both Orion and the Moonbus as for a kit of 'that' generation they are remarkably accurate. Protection of copyright has come a long way in the last 21 years, one would certainly now need agreement from the current rights owner of Pan Am graphics on any new Orion kit.
