Well Its been a while. After building so many Vulcans in the past I found it very hard to justify building another due to space. 15 72nd B2s takes up a lot.

General Melchett provided me with the best excuse I needed to Build another while at Huddersfield.. I was asked to Join Bomber Command SIG which I was glad too and he said I should try and do a Vulcan for Cosford show.

I picked this up while at the Huddersfield Show and it is a fine example by the looks of it. In that it is molded well some are not as good as others.

(I still need to pick a username to Join the Bomber Command SIG with hopefully something more imaginative than Robvulcan which I picked in a rush joining this my first forum.)

I love this kit and built many over the years mostly as weekend builds with my Grandad who has now sadly past but I feel I could do better and want to put more effort into this one.

So this one will be wheels down and I still am not totally certain on which airframe I will be doing It is likely to be XM597 In the 60s low level High gloss camo with D-Roundels

I don't think I will go heavy on the after market stuff but I have ordered some wolfpack intake inserts as they look fabulous and I am keen to try them.

I am tempted to open up the Bombay but not decided yet as its not often you see them parked up and opened up. I think I might prefer to have it stood waiting on a QRA pan.

I now have many projects on here stalled that I need to resume plus an ever growing shelf of doom and a still growing stash pile, I have definitely cause the modeling disease since coming on here and going to Cosford Telford and Huddersfield shows.. Very happy about it too. Britmodeller has helped make 2010 to present day very happy indeed. met some great people and learned lots.

15 B2's? One can never have enough Vulcan's. ....

Yes actually a few are b1s and b1as All were made wheels up due to them just being quick fun builds. I dunno what to do with them now,. At the time I was happy now I look back and can only see whats wrong with them but I love them and they remind me of my Grandad but I guess I will have to put some away soon.

I think its funny that This year I wanted to attack the stash and do some different subjects then My first build of the year is another Vulcan ahaha. I will get something different done this year too I hope.

As C-in C the BC SIG RobVulcan is more than apt and totally acceptable. Looking forward to seeing the finished article though Cosford ain't too long so best crack on

I don't know what give you that idea. Just something about them I love. I also like that Vulcan in StarTrek Enterprise. Jolene Blalock or t'pol. ;)

Cheers guys. Ah yes the little Dragon Vulcans I am hooked on them beautiful kit that. Well I do seem to like setting myself tight deadlines so this could be like the Spitfire build and the Vulcan B1 and B1A builds they were tight on schedule.

Not only had I best get cracking but I best make sure I get plenty of coffee in the cupboard and Custard Creams. A tip I picked up from Canberra Kid when you get stuck and you can't progress have a biscuit and all soon seems to come together and your perspective on the kit changes. It actually works.

After doing a few of these I always start by removing all the little parts from the sprues as they are only lightly attached and can go missing.

I put them in safe pots or bags and then build up sub assemblies. I will start by fitting the 8 engine tunnel parts, building the tail fin and wings first and then turning my attention to the centre section as this is were most the work with be. It also seems to speed the build up doing that too.

I am tempted by that etch for the Bombay but I have forgotten who makes it is is WEM or something like that. I have got the bombs and the Blue Danube or Violet Club left over from my valiant. I am guessing I could use those with this one.

Hi Woody37 I would love to see you do a Vulcan. Seeing you and your models at Huddersfield really re-ignited my love for WW2 Bombers. Something that I have always loved but sadly not got around to building any of yet. I am itching to make that NOVO Lancaster I picked up for a fiver cant stop looking at the parts and bought the paint for her. looks a nice kit.

I am starting with sub assemblies and small annoying parts first so here the Tail has been glued together on every one of these I have made you have to bend the spine in to help the two halves meet on the mating surfaces. This was the same. Now I can set it to one side and let it dry thoroughly ready for filing the tail tip back to the original style later.

The tail cone is joined too and the tip will be fitted later. I may have to mod this as there were many slight variation to this 2nd style tail cone regarding smaller bulges and the rear tip so far me and General Melchett have noitced 3 variations of the tip to this. The kit here providing the most commonly seen later type. They were originally small short and fitted the profile of the cone with a later slightly longer type then this more squared off version.

I got these fab little files from Little Cars at Huddersfield they are really fine and will come in handy for this build.

I am starting off with the tedious little parts here for the engine tunnels and the bombay supports to get them out the way for later.

I built this quite a lot of years ago, and I thought that it was the dog's doo-dah's then. It would be really nice if Mr Airfix would give us a new tooling of it. I can think of at least one person who would buy several. :winkgrin:

Well its still a fabulous kit and certainly not as bad as some would have you believe. A new tool would be welcome However I reckon this kit would still beat a new tool, Because a new one would have recessed lines which on a Vulcan are very hard to see even when your up close in person.

I would still buy loads if Airfix were to bring one out though. I would much prefer a 1/72 than 1/48TH for 2 reasons one space two how much would it cost !. But I would still be tempted by that. It would make a good coffee table..

Has anyone got any photos of XM597 in the 60s I want to get as many as possible. As General Melchett shown me some photos of her with 2 other vulcans that were in the normal MSG and Dark Green 60s scheme. XM597 on the other hand is wearing DSG and Green or Possibly Ocean Grey with MSG patches on the Radome, Refueling probe, tail fin and tail cone. I take it she would have ended up in MSG later on as she was wearing that in 1974 but that was after alot of mods.

The only other 2 I have seen with the DSG is XH479 and XM600

Now on this build I am adding the bits I never bothered too with the wheels up jobs.

so in goes the bulkhead of the front wheel well, and I have decided I still want her close up even though wheels are down so in goes the door, This crew is not gonna be getting out fast on this mission.

Great stuff the more the merrier Hope you enjoy it.

Next up to sort these out. So far this is the best molded Scarefix Vulcan I have ever seen the parts are well done and fit pretty well. The little attachment in the centre of these needs to be filed down or they wont fit flush as they should.

Every Airfix Vulcan I made has this problem.

The Little Cars Files are excellent fine and sharp they sorted these in a few mins and they are now on.

Now the Crazy moment came I decided to make this a 2 build project with a Little Vulcan I picked up at Telford I thought I would chuck this into the Mix as a bonus side build to this project as I need to source some parts for doing the exhausts as I am doing this as a 300s machine not the 200s version so I need to work out how to improve what Airfix have given us here. They look like 300s too me but they need something doing to them. I also have to await my Wolfpack intakes to arrive.

In the mean time I can throw this together In-between doing the Big BIrd.

You wot?? Only one person????? :lol: Give us a new B1/B1A to go with it & I'd have probably end up with nearly as many Vulcans as the RAF!!. I agree with Rob. The kit is by no means as bad as a lot of people suggest. True, it's no shake'n'bake kit but, a little TLC & patience works wonders. A new tool WOULD be lovely though. If it was anything like the quality of current Airfix releases it would be stunning

OH yes... If it was a b1 and b1a I would buy at least a modest 30 of them, Along with a Victor b1 too, The early V bombers are always forgotten it seems. Its always B2. but for the Valiant we really need the originals, The Vulcan b1 is totally different to the B2. Totally different smaller wings, different tail, tail cone, engine tunnels, wheels, langing gearl legs, exhausts, air intakes, engine faces, etc etc. That would be a dream come true for me. We get marks of every other plane so why not V bombers. I am optimistic it will happen because Airfix have done wonders giving us the kits I thought we would never get. Nimrod, TSR2, Canberras, Javelin, Sea Vixen, Valiant ETC. Airfix are a great company.
