Tamiya YZF R1

Recommended Posts

Thought I'd start a little section on my current build, she may be lacking some detail, I've not currently gone to the extent of applying washes to the engine as this is my first kit build in a long time, I'd prefer it to look half presentable at the end, hopefully!

Well starting the build seemed to take forever, reading the processes involved, all the different colours on the engine, trimming the parts, masking out. Took a few days before I had anything to show for it!

Eventually it picked up pace and was nearly complete minus the carbs

Was really enjoying all the detail as more was added

Finally, the completed block, I am still having trouble with the hoses on the top staying on, they keep popping off, don't know if you could recommend any other glue

I got merrily carried away with the frame and putting the engine in, testing it all fitted together before any glue was put on, but the one thing I found most difficult was the footpegs with the gearshift linkage. I painted it all up and just before moving it back into the house I quickly flash the paint off in front of the heater; clumsy me forgot how fragile plastic was (I'm more used to painting full size car and bike bits). Anyway, the plastic warped slightly for the gear shifter, I tried to straighten it and snap! I was sooooo annoyed with myself.

So with the assistance of my dads workshop I turned a brass fitting on the lathe and my dad helped me to silver solder some stainless steel wire onto it to make a new gear shift linkage. I like it, kinda gives a realistic feel to it so didn't turn out too badly

I have started work on the rear swing arm, but since it's the weekend I have to spend time with the mrs so it'll be next week before I do anymore.

Comments are welcome as always :)

I've decided on the white and red as on the box front, looks quite nice but I can see it being a pain to achieve the finish. I'm currently looking somewhere I can buy micro finishing pads so I can polosh up the paint to a flat surface before a gloss is applied, same with the gloss surface for applying the decals.

I ride a kawasaki ZXR 750 but never seen a kit.

Swing arm is done minus the mudguard

Unfortunately I'm struggling to paint the body colours, so I'm currently striping it back to plastic to start again to get a better finish.

Right, small update.

Today has mainly been testing the red paint on the mudguards because I can't finish the rear swing arm until the rear mudguard is complete

I managed to get a good wet coat on for the gloss but it attracted some dust so these need to be flatted before a gloss coat goes on. Unfortunately I don't have anywhere else other than the garage to paint, I may try putting the gloss on in the workshop but both the garage and workshop need a good cleaning up because there's filler dust everywhere.

I'll try flatting with 2000 wet n dry, hopefully it doesn't blow through to the primer, which I must say I'm very impressed with.

I've been playing around the last few days, trying to get the paint looking half decent!

I was very impressed with the delivery time from wonderland models where I purchased my microsol and microset.

Had a test with it on the rear plate, I've since done the inner fairings in carbon too.

Found a decent sand which box, used my home made galvanised toolbox

I applied the red, flatted the imperfections and applied the x-22 gloss clear. As with the application of the red it didn't go quite so well on the rear mudguard so that requires flatting and a coat again but the front one turned out quite well. I don't know if I should leave it like this or flat it and polish it. Yes it needs flatting for where the decals are going and then another coat of clear gloss but I'm just thinking about the future. I must say I'm still enjoying myself, I'm very impressed with the microset and microsol. Be happy if I can achieve a high standard throughout this build.

Ok so the build stalled a bit as I was struggling with the paintwork and just trying to get the small bits done has been driving me mad.

Test fitted some of the main body to see how it all fits, quite impressed how tamiya construct the models.

And at long last, the piece I've been trying to complete is done! With spraying the clear coat onto the flat red I've got a bit of metallic flake going on, can't tell in the pictures but it looks stunning in real life. Thought I'd spice it up a bit

Sorry about the slow progress, it's gradually coming together.

Had a bit of a mishap with the carbon decal on one of the front side bits so I ordered a new sheet from a very friendly place and was much more impressed with the result so I decided to replace all the carbon bits with the new sheet including the exhaust. Think it has more of a shine to it. Anyway here's a few snaps, just building the front end up now

Oooooooh, I like it, you've moved along nicely with this build Neil. Re the tool box, good idea but not the kitchen towel, ditch it, it's a dust trap. Rather use a sheet of folded newsprint that has been dampened ever so slightly.

Thanks for the comments! Re Steve, no I'm not spraying from the can, I'm using my airbrush.

Never thought about that Colin, I'll try that because I was from time to time getting particles of dust which were causing problems.

  • 3 weeks later...

Slow progress so far; stripped my side fairings and front due to the white. Managed to reprime them so while waiting for paint to dry I started to put some transfers on, never realised how picky I could be with the positioning.

I think the yamaha could of been at more of an angle but then it looks slightly odd from above, also the R1 sticker could of done with a tiny bit more of adjustment but it could be that I'm being overly picky with it. I have the opposite side to do so I'll try to mirror this side then gloss over the transfers so it's nice and shiney.

Looking good Neil, I built one of these last year in the same colour scheme, loved every minute of it.

Rick, go and treat yourself to a Tamiya bike kit. They just fall together, easiest most pleasurable builds in the world. Complex, but not too challenging.

Enjoy all,

Matt

That's a lovely job you're making of this one mate, I'm looking forward to seeing the end result.

Seconded on the Tamiya bike kits, well, Tamiya kits in general to be honest. Speaks volumes forJapaneseengineering skill, I can't say I've ever had one that didn't just fall together.

Odd.
