Tamiya 1/35 Churchill Mk.vii (my first tank!)

Recommended Posts

Hi Ben,

Mixing Vallejo Model Color 70.888 and 70.924 in equal parts produces a very appealing SCC15.

Kind regards,

Adam

Hi Ben,

Vallejo have brought out a colour set for British WWII vehicles, not expensive and probably worth a punt, I think they are about £8 for the set. Great build btw.

Dan

Dan,

Cheers for that mate I'll have a looksie :)

More WIP shots to come over the next few days as the turret construction with PE is all done.

Manged to get some bits done the last couple of nights.

Turret construction is finished, all i need to do is roll a very thin sausage of 2 part epoxy and apply it around the seam between the turret casting and top plate as a welding seem.

Also done a few little bits around the main hull and test fitted the suspension arms, these will be removed for ease of painting but i left them on in the photos to get a feel for how they look under the skirts.

More to come soon.

Good to see some progress, Ben, and very good to see that I am not the only one who puts things on backwards! :)

Kind regards,

Adam

It was the reference photo that you put on the previous page that made me realise Adam.

it's a very clear photo which is very useful. Your valentines look to be coming on really well! :)

Looking very neat. That barrel is a real beauty- much better than the plain ARMO one I have on my kit, and not much difference in price either.

Looks like the etch is coming along well. I find that for folding longer lengths of brass an 'old fashioned' razor blade is quite useful, if a little by scary! Otherwise I just use a scalpel blade and tweezers like you do. Never have had a specialist jig, although I do accept they have their uses! I also find having a set of needle files on hand is quite useful because you can use them to achieve 90' angles on things like handles, or use them to roll curved pieces.

Look forward to seeing it come along- By the way- if you break/lose any items on the etch drop us a line- I have a few bits left over on my sheet that I didn't bother adding as they would be obscured by weathering/stowage. Just ask!

cheers,

Will

Did you use the blade vane sight on yours?

i have a feeling I'll need a new one!

I'm afraid mine is rather firmly glued to my model! Might be a bit overkill, but I think the same sight is available as a laser cut paper job. I forget who makes it though. Scrap etch from around the edge of the Edward set instead?

Not to worry mate.

I've managed to salvage mine (just!) lol

Cheers Steve!

Really enjoying this build so far! It's nice to get away from flighty things for a bit!

Almost finished the entirety of the PE now so will be moving on to the suspension shortly.

That's my only grumble with this kit. The amount of clean up needed on the road wheel arms is insane. I haven't seen such pronounced mold lines since my games workshop days!

I have some serious back scraping to do!!

That's all for now.

Ben.

Hi all.

Plenty of progress over the weekend so will post up pics soon.

Big thanks to Steve aka. Fat fingers for sending me a load of spare track links to slap around the hull.

on a separate note any tips on muddying up the hull. How to do it? Etc

Hi Ben,

For mud or dirt, I've 3 methods depending on the level of muck you wish to achieve.

First is simply spraying the lower areas with a thin, light coat of Tamiya flat earth. That usually comes

out well.

Second is using artist's pastels ground down & mixed with lighter fluid - some people use turps/white spirit, but I find lighter fluid evaporates more

cleanly & doesn't leave any residue.

Finally for heavy mud - actual dirt mixed with PVA glue! Works a treat, especially if mixed with some static grass to give texture & body.

Cheers

Patrick

Hi chaps, been a bloody long week!

I was asked to stop over at work until 3AM on wednesday whilst contractors were on site so i brought the churchy with me and quite happily made head way whilst being paid double time to do so!

So here are the latest shots. 99% of the photo etch is done now just the odd little detail here and there to do. My next goal is to start tackling the wheels/tracks.

Until next time.....

I'm aware of some burrs on various bits of photo etch but they've since been filed away :)
