trickyrich
Woohoo here we go!!! Ok after such a long wait it has finally come…………and it’ll be a few weeks before I can start!! Ok I decided to go with something nice and easy…….then I found this, the Czech AF Mig-21MF s/n 7701 in “Splinter Camouflage”, something nice and simple! Copyrighted material removed photo courtesy of Airlines.net Ok the base model will be a 1/48 Eduard MiG-21MF, I have a choice of two, but will be using the ProfiPACK one for this build….have plans for the other one! Lots of nice bit inside, Eduard was even nice enough to give me two complete sets of PE bits! What lovely people!! Not too sure if I’ll through extra bits at this one or not, have a few weeks to decide before I even get a chance to play with it. The camouflage is the big part of this build and I have a choice of either the sort of easy path and use the Syh@rt decals……..can imagine how much fun that will be!! Or go hard core and use the Model-CZ masks, a lot of work but mistakes can be corrected….just have to make sure everything is in the correct place! Or a combo of the two……..not too sure about that, for sure I won’t be able to get the colours to match. Anyway am sooo looking forward to this one, though I still have to wait for 3 more weeks till I get back home!

Wolwe82
Very nice choice of camouflage, i remember when this was fresh new, it was something so new and fresh here, i had big poster of this on wall in my room Its like 15years already but its still one of nicest camouflages ever made(at least for me:) ) so i ll watch your progress Wish you luck! SaintsPhil
Well this one will sure look good when it's done, I'd go decals too I think, bit of forward planning needed though I guess.... Good luck!
AngstROM
What an excellent subject; I've always admired this scheme. Watching closely!
trickyrich
Thanks everyone, I’m really looking forward to this one, will look great beside the Sukhoi (did a Su17M3 for the Swing Wing GB). I just loved this camo scheme as soon as I saw it, though I wondered how to replicate it until I first found the masks, then later the decals. I'm still not sure about the decals, I haven't read anything about them anywhere so don't know if they'll give me any trouble. I would like to paint it, as I think I'll be able to get a more realistic finish. Will do a test run of both methods to see how they go. Decided to throw some extras on as well, have a Eduard BigSin super detail set, Quick Boost Air Scoops, and a Brass Detail-Up Pitot probe. Got bored today so did a bit of retail therapy! trickyrich
I have just found some great photos of this beasty being painted. I keep forgetting how big these aircraft were, and it's not to you see it like this that you get a true idea of the size. This is such a cool shot! hopefully my masking is as good! mmmm interesting colour............. This last photo I find quite sad ........poor wee thing, you just want to give it a big hug, a nice good wash and take it home, you can almost see it's little tail wagging! Hmmm.......I wonder how much they want for it???
_H_
This is going to be amazing! Gotta love the 211th tactical, they do some great paint jobs......and a pretty nice calendar too Howard
snapper_city
Shame to see it end up like that.
Wolwe82
Yea, i always think why they dont give it for free to some museum or so.. They wont sell it anyway and all they can get out of it is some trash money when selling it to scrapyard..
trickyrich
only 5 days to go before I can start on this build .....CAN'T WAIT!!!!!! Am a little bit stressed about the splinter part of this build, it is the major part and if I screw it up............. This will be a super clean build, though with only a little wear & tear in the cockpit and undercarriage bays, all other photo show this beast looking very pretty and clean! I need to attack/fondle something resin to calm down. Least the BigSin detail set has arrived, wife reckons it looks great.....even if they're not shoes! trickyrich
ok I have finally gotten to start this build way behind everyone else of course! The final extras have arrived which is very exciting...... Eduard BigSin Super detail set, lots and lots of resin to play with......and PE! Quick Boost Air Scoops, they may be small but a super quality though I think they may get lost in the camo scheme. And finally a SuSeMi Brass Pitot Tube, this is just beautiful and so much simpler than that the glue together PE ones!! I still remember all the fun I had with the Su17’s Pitot probe! Plus they’re cheaper than even the stiff from Master Model. My paints didn’t arrive till after lunch so painting day is tomorrow, today was spent playing with everything to see how it all fits and cleaning up but.....yeap even the Eduard resin bits had some flash. I really didn’t follow any plan or instructions as usual so my bench is covered with bits in various stages of assembly and cleaning up. Trying to get as much done as I can without painting. Though I haven’t seen any photo’s of this aircraft with weapons I just can’t help myself and will fit a pair of R-60’s. Have some photos of its brothers fitted with these........so why not! Tomorrow as mentions the painting starts, everything will be given a coat of aluminium before the interior colours, that lovely blue/green for the cockpit and “gray” (think it’s closer to RLM2, though I am open to suggestions for this, photos show it is a “gray” colour) for the of the interior bits though NM seems to be quite a common finish as well ( with variations in metal colour) plus the start of the engine painting. Well its good to have finally started, am looking forward to this build!
SaintsPhil
Bet it feels good to finally get started! I have to agree about both the pitot and the scoops, if I was only adding a budget AM to mine they'd be my choice, canopy mask too of course! RLM02 seems to be the way to go for the interiors, or like you say an aluminium colour, I think it would be anodised rather than NMF though. SaintsPhil
I think Tamiya smoke, with maybe a touch of clear yellow might be the way to go... I think maybe the license built ones have anodised bays Here you go http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/awa01/101-200/awa153-Mig21MF/part4/images/13_m21_mainwheelbay_faceback.jpg Edited February 17, 2014 by SaintsPhil
trickyrich
ok just a small update today, didn't get as much done as I wanted today, way too many distractions but what I did manage to do I'm very happy with. After a bit more cleaning and fitting the first bits were given a coat of aluminium, before being given their separate coats of top colour, this for the weathering effect I’ll use later on. I next made up a batch of the interior blue/green colour using Mr Hobby Aqueous H25 & H46 (50/50) which is a perfect match for the pre-painted Eduard PE. This was then sprayed on the cockpit bits, have half a jar of the stuff now so won’t run out in a hurry. The colour is correct, it just looks funny because I'm using a piece or crap LED light , was after a "Cool White or Daylight" bulb but all they had was a "Warm White", just throws the colours off so much!! Just can't find a 100W equivalent Cool White/Daylight LED bulb...will have to go back to the fluoro bulb! Oh and the rear bulkhead doesn’t look patchy in real life, just light and camera giving me more grief! Parts of the wheel wells where then masked and painted RLM2 gray/green. One wheel well in the above photo has been given another coat of mask read for anodising. Everything was then given a light wash of black for shadow detailing, and then when dried lightly brushed and flicked to give a “chipped” effect. The Main wheel wells were given a light a light coat of very thinned clear green to start the simulation of anodised aluminium. Next up will be another very thinned coat of gold to give the anodised effect I’m after. The wheel wells were a myriad of different colour depending on when the aircraft was built and where it was in its re-furbed life, there doesn’t seem to be a true standard. So I’m going for a well used life, worn but still fairly clean. After reading some of the history of this particular aircraft, it did have a very interesting life. Again only a small update today, hopefully I’ll be able to finish the cockpit before I head off to work on Thursday. Oh and I cut out the forward air brakes so I can have them open..........big mistake...oh well! Everything so far is going together nicely on this build, am really enjoying this! trickyrich
Ok my last update for another three weeks....off to work tomorrow!!! Again other things have stopped me from doing more but I'm happy with the solid start I've made. I'm not happy with my camera, it's throwing the colours really off, the blue/green cockpit looks blue!!! May have to buy a good macro lens for the D5!! Anyway....... Just about finished the cockpit, spent ages going half blind with the wee PE bits ....does look good though and the finish is very much like the photos I have so happy about that! Just noticed that the dusty bunnies have been busy!! Am sort of happy with my anodising experiments, didn’t have the exact paint I needed but again got the look I wanted. The main wheel wells just need a little bit more work before they’re finished. Have started the ejection seat, reckon there’s a couple more hours in that before that’s done as well. The engine have more work to be done, the base metal finish is complete, just need to give it it’s green finish (that’s just so odd!!) and some heat stress. So when I get back home I’ll have about a day’s work before I can close up the fuselage, though the shock cone with need to be 100% complete with initial splinter! So maybe a wee bit longer. The overall finish is actually really good so next to no weathering is required, just so panel pre-shading before the base coat. I still haven’t decided whether to paint or decal.......hopefully I’ll make my mind up soon. cheers Rich
nimrod54
This looks great Rich, very nicely painted and weathered details. Looking forward to more when you have finished your stint.
trickyrich
ok I'm finally back home, so let’s get on with this..... I finally finished off the engine exhaust nozzle, lots of work bit in the end very little to be seen! It was initially painted steel, then a light coat of Model Master Burnt Metal and Exhaust, which when dried was buffed, then a light coat of Interior Green (once on looked the colour the engine should be), which was given a distressed finish. Looked really good when done....though forever lost now everything together...and forgot to take photo! p[lease excuse dust bunnies from photos............was play with some resin last night and the whole place is covered in dust........but it was sooo much fun! Finished off main wheel wells, am happy with how they look. Then started to put everything together........ wings first, then fuselage..... Then joined wings to fuselage......not the best fit, needs a little bit of filler in a couple of places......will be using stretched sprue instead of filler so I don’t lose any details. It’s finally starting to look like a Mig! Decided I will be brave and paint the Splinter scheme using the masks, only issue is the actual colour required are very vague! Especially the darkest colour, depending on photos it’s either just Extra Dark Sea Grey (like) or the same colour with hint of blue.....confusing! Anyway next will clean up the fuselage joints and start adding more bits to it, hopefully will be ready to paint in a couple of days.

Parabat
Fantastic and detailed build, the cockpit looks incredibly realistic to my eyes. I look forward to seeing you doing the splinter scheme.
Jabba
That is looking very good, I too had to use a little filler on the wing to fuselage joint.
