Calling the 1:700 Guru's

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys

With the Less That a Tenner GB fast approaching I would like to enter something of the seas. With the price limit constraint Ebay seems to have the most choice for this and I have found quite a few options that interest me of the 1:700 variety. AM items will not be involved in the build so I have to take that into consideration also.

Basically I am interested in the following kits

Tamiya USS Fletcher - Waterline

Trumpeter Iowa Class, Any of the 4..

Trumpeter Liberty Ship. SS Jeremiah O'Brien / SS John W. Brown (what's the difference?)

Dragon Type 42 HMS Sheffield

I'm after any information on these that will help me to make a decision or any other choices that can be recommended. Remember AM will not be included in the build.

Currently a Liberty ship or Iowa class are my current favourites but the Fletcher is also drawing me in.

The Fletcher states it is waterline so I could try my hand at a dio.

Are the others waterline or the full hull?

Thanks

Mark

I have built both the Fletcher and the Type 42 - both waterline and good kits - of the two I would go for the Type 42 if you are not using any AM.

Have not built either of the Trumpeter kits so can not comment on those - I might have missed the best!

I have one of the Trumpeter Liberty ships, and the Tamiya Fletcher. I like both, but think the Liberty the more interesting kit for under a tenner. However, you'd get even more size for money from the Iowa! As far as I recall, the only criticism of the Liberty was that the four life rafts come in two different styles, square cornered or rounded, two of each, whereas ships would have one style or the other. Not a killer problem.

No - put both square ones on one side and both round ones on the other, and no-one will notice. Or, Just because I haven't seen a photo of a mixed fit doesn't mean it didn't happen...perhaps. Or find someone willing to swap. Assuming the postage wouldn't count towards the "over a tenner"...

What I missed was that I don't know what if any difference there is between the two Liberty kits. If anything, but there can't be much.

I doubt there is much difference between the two other than differing decals. But I technically know nothing about the subject either. I went for the SS Jeremiah O'Brien in the end as I saw her in San Francisco. I really wish I had more time to have gone on her though.

Thanks for all your help Graham.
