Airfix Mitsubishi Zero 1/72 truley OOB !

Recommended Posts

Last one of the year, Thought I'd do a quick 24hr build and share with you, a strict out of the box build using nothing but whats in the box parts, glue, paint and brush. Allowed myself 1 tool, a scalpel!

Heres the kit an airfix Zero starter set.

Paints included HU11,29,85 & 90

Off to a good start with the control column breaking whilst taking it off the sprue, plastic in this kit seems quite brittle, an undercarriage door was to break later too.

Stuck with the instructions and the cockpit built up and the fuselage closed up, the kit includes a whole pot of HU29 brown, but the only place the instructions say to use it is on the headrest bit of a waste IMHO. Some nice instrument panel decals included.

Engine was painted silver and then dry brushed black, cowling got a coat of black too.

Wings tail and rudder next, reasonably good fit

Undercarriage bays got a coat of silver then dry brushed black.

Thought I had taken some pics of assembling the undercarriage legs and prop, but could not find them in the camera so obviously not - sorry, legs and prop were painted silver with black on the rear of the blades.

Prop, pitot, tail wheel, aileron balances, canopy and mast were all fitted then painted HU90 sky, canopy frames were done freehand with the no.2 brush that the kit came with, don't have much experience with acrylic but found any blemishes and smudges on the canopy could be gently scraped off with the scalpel.

Decals next had to accept the silvering as its a strict OOB so no gloss coat, The exhaust was painted with a mix of the black brown & silver. Dry brushed black downstream of the guns, exhaust and wheels along with some brown for the wheels.

And we are done !

(actually took 27 hours including sleep)

Wow! Excellent job Mark; especially strictly just OOB. Was the fuselage brush painted using the kit paint pot? Impressive if so, how many coats did you need as it looks very smooth and one would usually expect a bit of a blotchy finish after one coat considering (I'm guessing this was also part of your rules) no primer.

Great stuff

Cheers

Aaron, Unprimed and brush painted just took 1 coat for the sky, gloss black and metalic bits needed several, it looked ok but noticed some minor patchiness when I was doing the decaling. But I'd need to look closely in strong light to see it.

That is impressive work for using only the items in the box Mark. It goes to show that one can make darn good models just using the very basics and testament to the skill of the modeller and not the quality of the kit and equipment.

Thanks Aaron

Wish it was just skill, The quality of this kit is actually pretty darn good and the very precise fit of the parts really helped to keep any big gaps at bay. Might not have been able to do this on an older kit

That is great and I LOVE the idea of taking OOB to a different level. No Airbrush, no Decal fix no gloss coat.....great effort.

It's fun....it's real...it takes you back to another time and.....it's still a great challenge that I'm guessing MANY more will have a crack at!

More POWER to ya!

Nice job Mark. Takes me back to childhood (but you've made a much better job than I ever did).

A simpler time where absolute accuracy was n't an issue and every build was a fun adventure.

Good on you.

On a different note, I was surprised that no pilot figure is included. Is this the new tool?

Cheers.

Thanks, better job than I ever did too. Yes there is a figure included in the kit. He's on the lower left of the middle sprue on 2nd photo

Excellent job. You did very well with the Sky paint. I have always found the paint in those little pots rather challenging - especially on an unprimed model.

Silver and black was a challenge and needed a couple of coats but the sky just seemed to want to go on. With hindsight what I could have done since the matt brown was only used in a very small area was to use the brown as a primer and also could have mixed the black with the sky to make a dark green for the cockpit, maybe painted belts too. not sure if mixing the brown and gloss black would have matted the black a bit to make a better tyre colour.
