HammerUK9
Morning all, On the back of my spray booth topic, I thought I'd turn my whole desk into a topic So, here's the empty space that's crying out for conversion: And here's my rough desk plan: The main idea is to have a working space and an adjacent spray booth. I want a little shelf at the back for regularly used items and, likewise, some shelf space under the booth. I also want to mount some decent illumination and perhaps even a camera so that I can better document my Harrier build, amongst others. I'll consider a rack for paints/brushes etc at a later point. Materials: 11mm plywood (because we have loads) Any timber that we have spare (and we have a lot) Bondloc contact adhesive Assorted screws & panel pins So I cut the top surface ages ago: And here's it with the spray booth sitting on top (the black line shows where the shelf will go): And from another angle: This is what I'm having to share my building space with: '76 MG Midget at a most unfortunate angle! (and under the massive pile of stuff is an MG M-Type ) This is the left-hand side, the cutouts are so it can fit over my windowsill/skirting board properly. ...and then with leg and battening in place: And the right hand side (kindly ignore the bike ) : And just to prove it all stands up: More later Tim

Andy Mac
That's looking good Tim. I've had a look around at various "computer" type desks and can't find anything a suitable size, so I may have to build one myself, so I'm watching this with interest and I'm all ready to steal borrow some ideas

HammerUK9
Morning all, Progress report! I got the basic frame of the desk built and, after sitting at it for a minute, I decided to bring it indoors so that I could see how well it fit and then work out how the rest would go in. Stuff like shelving (if there's room), my compressor/airbrush, brushes, paint etc. So here we are: My room suddenly feels a lot smaller! Opinions on the battleship grey decor? Extractor fans arrived last week and I've now cut the holes in the base of the spray booth: I'm planning on working some gratuitous electronic wizardry into the booth and the desk, and so have drilled the holes out for the relevant switches/LEDs. Then I realised they should probably be at the other end Here's the plan: The 'Off' LEDs are red, while the 'On' ones are, quite naturally, green. One switch controls the fans, while the other provides power to the motor - I decided that a rotating turntable in the booth would be a super idea The DPDT switch is installed in reverse so that I can control the direction of the motor. More soon, Tim
ancient mariner
Oh bu*ger, its taken me forty years to make a mediocre "two bob" Airfix kit and now in the Autumn of my years Ive got totake O level woodwork as a night class. ( thats provided I dont have to do the the car maintenance class, hinted at in your photos)
HammerUK9
OK, all the latest: I realised that the motor shaft ought to go right through the middle of my filter support, so I sawed out the centre section of the support and replaced it with a wider section that had a hole drilled for the shaft. I also hollowed out the underside further so that I could install a proper bearing for the shaft (seemed like the right thing to do ) The whole booth has been primed and the first coat of the interior colour has gone on: I've got all my electronic bits now except for a pair of green LEDs which Maplins rather let me down on... just have to get them after Christmas: And for a little bit of AC jiggery-pokery, I've got some 'proper' toggle switches: Tim
mrvr6
im loving this! pc fans are ideal because theyr brushless so no chance of unexpected bangs may i also suggest a paintrack while youre at it? (this is for tamiya pots)
HammerUK9
Thanks, that looks a superb workspace! What's the main material of the rack? Looks a bit like chipboard from here. I've got every intention of building a paint rack into the desk but I haven't thought about the specifics yet - you'll see it here when I get to it Tim
Mike
Where are the fans venting to Tim? What sort of throughput of air do you expect from them? The reason I ask is that I tried using an extractor fan first when I built V.1.0 of my spray booth, and the suction from even a relatively large fan (around 6"?) wasn't sufficient to move the fumes out of the workshop. I used an upside-down cooker hood in the end, and that one sucks in a good way
Space Ranger
Simple modeling desk: One hollow-core interior door, stained and varnished to suit. Two two-drawer filing cabinets, one at each end, for support. One or more under-counter storage drawer units mounted underneath. Some doors come with a pre-drilled hole for a doorknob; use the hole to feed electrical cords for lamps, Dremel tools, etc., through to wall outlet.

I used an upside-down cooker hood in the end, and that one sucks in a good way Well I'm informed that each fan will give me 60CFM (obviously with no back-pressure) and so 2 should be more than enough for my needs. It's a pretty short path to the window and I also plan to have a charcoal filter layer in the booth itself. Hopefully that'll be alright, considering I work 80-90% in acrylic anyway! If the flow isn't enough then I've got the means to replace those fans with larger ones. Tim
Mike
I wouldn't bother with filters myself - it just slows down the air & will eventually silt up. My cooker hood just dumps the air/fumes/dust out of the garage and every 6 months or so I give it a good clean to ensure it doesn't get too clogged with dry paint droplets

Breaker
Don't bother with Maplins for LEDs, far too expensive. Try Phenoptix on eBay, they're about £1.99 for 50 LED's.
Dazzio
Very nice set up there Hammer, I may have to steal the vent idea myself. Like you I am building a desk in my part-man-cave in the shed. I'm still trying to figure out the airbrush issue myself. But I might just settle on the old pipe out of the window. As for the fans and the worries with airflow issues, I just had a lookie on some of the computer websites I know and you can get a 140mm fan that can move 110CFM-ish. I also remember back in the day of a fan called a "Tornado" that really did do what it was called, my mate had them and when he turned on his computer turned on, it sounded like it was trying to reach orbit! Are those 80mm fans on there? Look forward to seeing more. Kind Regards, Dazz
HammerUK9
Hi Dazz, Thanks! Those are indeed 80mm fans - much like you I found single fans of 120-140mm that could shift the required volume of air, but I thought that by using two that could shift, say, 75% of the required volume then I'd have extra capacity and it would even the flow out a bit inside the booth. Sides and rear outer face now painted, and I thought I'd throw a bit of decoration on too - Smudge will know where it's from Tim
