U-boat crewman WW2

Resin 1/10 scale kit from Young Miniatures, completed with Vallejo acrylics. Also tried just a hint of some red ocher weathering powder on the flesh areas, but most of it ended up painted over. The binocular straps were scraped off the bust, and scratch built new ones with two layers of Tamiya masking tape, stuck over top each other and then cut to size.

Fantastic!

As already pointed out the skin tones are great. What really caught my eye was the wear and tear on the clothing. The jacket lapels and ridges are scuffed to perfection. Lifejacket has the grime rubbed into the recesses but the bit that carries it all for me is the cap. That is a faithful 'thousand miler'. It has been with him for some time, in all weathers, on his head or stuffed in his pocket.

Thanks for sharing

Thanks, everyone.

The kerchief was initially attempted freehand, but even at this scale I found it difficult to achieve a constant width for the lines. So I painted out the design, and tried again by masking the red lines and airbrushing those. The green lines were then added by paint brush, as well as touching up the red.

Jack

Jack,

EXCEPTIONAL Figure build..

STUNNING and. THE BEST ONE ever...EXQUISITE.

:worthy::worthy:

Sent this thread to MY artist sister and she says she was floored by your detailing of the eyes, skin tones, the beard,

And the expressive facial muscles as shown by your painting...

Of course I agree with MY sister ..it's most BEAUTIFUL and her comment is that you should do more..

Oh and WE both think he looks like a younger version of Sir Roger Moore who appeared in a movie looking like your figure..

I can't remember the name if the movie but was something like THE SEA ? .

Keep doing more of them..

Houston, thanks for those kind words from both you and your sister.

I must confess I do have a background in portrait painting on canvas, so that likely aided me here. After I clear my bench of my current Firefly project, plan is to do a full figure model of Red Sonja.

I'm not familiar with that particular movie, but some have also said there is a slight resemblance to Jürgen Prochnow of the movie Das Boot (1981).

regards,

Jack

Jack, I've seen this bust on a few occasions now and I have to say that this is by far the best painted of them all. Your artist's eye is apparent in every aspect of the piece from the skin tones throughout the fabrics and kit items. A beautiful work of art, thank you for sharing and giving us something to aspire to.

Hi Jack..

The scarf must have taken a steady hand as well ...... Really like the finished article.

I have the Andrea U-Boat Commander Bust half completed from years ago. Think its supposed to be a Jurgen Pruchnow look alike. You might have inspired me to get on with it !!

Thanks for a showing us your great painting skills.

Billy, thanks kindly.

The scarf was a bit of a problem area. Achieving acceptable straight lines not so much, but arriving at a consistent width with every individual stripe was. So I ended up masking and spraying the red vertical lines, followed with brushing in the remainder, as well as some touch ups.

That is cool if this inspires your Andrea bust to permanently leave your grey army. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to provide some answers if I can.

regards,

Jack

I would never do a bust myself I do not see the point of them HOWEVER I can appreciate the work that goes into making them as good as this one.

Thanks Knikki.

It's an individual thing I suppose. A lot of people would say the same thing about our hobby in general.

For me, doing figures/busts is just a natural offshoot from paricular subject that interests me, such as u-boats in this case.

regards,

Jack
