Database of light aircraft models

Scratchbuilder

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

is there a database/list, etc. of light aircraft models produced now and/or over the years.

Not airliners, unless they're very small ones like Dragon Rapides, etc.

Light private a/c, racing, sports, gliders, record, Schneider, that sort of thing. I am only interested in civil aircraft of the smaller kind, but cannot find anything very helpful on the net.

It seems to be a very unsung aspect of aviation.

Not many kits have been produced of this subject. But the ones in 1/72nd I recall are:

Airfix PA28 Cherokee

BN-2 Islander

Chipmunk, DH82 Tiger Moth, Beagle Basset, Cessna O-2A and SA Bulldog that can be civilianised??!!

Aurora:

PA28 Cherokee 140

PA23 Aztec

Cessna 337

Jet Commander

FROG:

DH60 Gypsy Moth

and DH88 Comet Racer(also by Airfix)

KP:

Piper J-3 Cub

Eidai( and under other labels)

Cessna 337

Fuji FA200 Subaru

Beech V-35 Bonanza

Cessna 172

quite a few French types in resin by Dujin but all now gone!!!

A number still available by A Models featuring mostly Yaks like the 50, 52 and so on, PZL Wilga

LS:

Pitts S2 Special two different boxings

BD-5 BD-5 Micro jet ( both in one box!)

Comet/Kleeware

Odd scale, about 1/64th Cessna 310 ( I've got one built!!)

Quite a few other Czech types from AZ Models and a few new ones to come!!

Some not very good resin kits from one of the Balkan countries did a range of twin engined Cessnas and Pipers

CMR did the Piper Super Cub.

There have been others in 1/48th and 1/32nd too plus a long time ago around the ealry 70s a 1/24 Cessna 172 (by Nichimo I think)

PA22 Tri Pacer to 1/33 by Monogram

Thats about all I can come with for now but I know there have been others dating back to the 50s and in 'fit the box scales'!! I expect others here may come up with more.

Hope this lot helps.

Hi There,

don't forget my all time favorite, the DHC-2 Beaver, which the Airfix kit comes up for sale on Ebay on a regular basis.

Hobbycraft also do it but I don't like the clear plastic fuselage!

And on a slightly odd scale, Frog did it in 1/80th scale!

You can't have enough Beavers.

So we must include the Turbo Beaver from Lift Here. 1/72 scale on amphib floats and expected out in the second half of 2014.

And whilst in Canada, didn't Matchbox do the Norseman on floats?

Plus;

Airfix & Frog

S-6B Schneider

Aeroclub

Pou-du-Ciel, Fox Moth

RugRatResins/Aircraft In Miniature

DH84 Dragon, DH90 Dragonfly, Cessna Bobcat. Miles Kestrel, Westland Wessex (small airliner)

Also a range of early pioneer aircraft including the Wright Flyer

Heller

DH89 Rapide, Arc-en-Ciel

Matchbox

Twin Otter - not sure if that comes into your airliner category but it's roughly Rapide size

Special Hobby (I think) or some other MPM offshoot

Cessna Bobcat, Beech 17 Staggerwing, Lockheed 10?

There is a range of gliders produced by a Polish company and High Planes do a range of racing aircraft - Mustangs/Sea Furies.

Czechmaster do quite a few resin gliders.

PM/Pioneer2 did the Beech 18 in 1/72 and there was also an old odd scale kit possibly Aurora or Comet

Hope this helps

Steve

Marui used to do a very nice Cherokee 140 in 1:48 - have a couple in the stash to do two of the ones (VH-PPN and VH-CHF) I got my license on - but I haven't seen it around anywhere for yonks. I believe they also did a Fuji 200 (although that might have been Nichimo).

Aeroclub does a Tiger Moth in 1:48, as did Matchbox/Revell in 1:32. Revell has done a 1:32 Piper Super Cub in two versions, wheeled undercarriage and floats, as well as a couple of 1:32 gummyfluegels (LS-1 and AS-13, IIRC).

There was also that whacking great Cessna 172 by a Japanese company whose name escapes me at the moment.

Thats the one I mention in my reply. 1/24th IIR.

AZ also do/did Auster 3,4, and 6. And the old Airfix one. Hobbycraft do a DHC-3 Otte. Others mentioned above that I didn't mention was bex=cause They are more commonly known about, The Aurora Beech 18 twin was 1/81 but they also did a bigger one to around 1/40th I think.

Another Japanese maker did a Cherokee to 1/36th and was a nice kit that I started to build but never remeber what happened to it since

Minicraft have done a selection in 1/48th. I've got the Cessna 150 in the stash which I do intend to do one day as G-OBAT, the aircraft I first soloed in. From memory, they also did the Cessna C172, PA28 Cherokee, PA18 Piper Cub (on wheels and floats) and my favourite, the Beechraft Bonanza.

Ah yes Forgot about the Proctor, still have one in my treasure side of the stash albeit as a NOVO issue But its still a nice kit. And yes, the civvy versions of the Miles Magister. FROG did one and now RS plus the 48th kit of same.

Sword and Pavla had the Grumman Goose and Gosling in their ranges suitable for civvy schemes a plenty!

Heron and Skyvan but thats getting toward biggish sized civvy planes', by Airfix.

Twin Pin, Riley Dove and ordinary Dove/ Devons by Magna resins

1/41st scale Cessna 180 byMonogram and now in 1/72 coming from AZ soon one hopes.

So far, judging by the responses it seems that light aircraft and civvy versions of some military types have been quite well catered for but its the availability of some of them now that sems to be an issue.

Ah thanks for that reminder Mark. I've got a Bonanza like in your photo but in a different box(Academy). It is a nice kit that I have nearly sold here a few times but resisted adding it to the list because I will want to build it sometime. A very nice aeroplane but apparently, according to the new series on TV about ferrying aircraft(Dangerous Flights on Discovery , Monday nights) it was quite a dangerous aeroplane if not handled right due to the V tail so was replaced by the single fin later. But thats what I like about it.

The V-tail Bonanza was called the Fork-tailed Doctor Killer for two unrelated reasons. First, Beech made a mistake with the tail structure, which resulted in a few in-flight breakups. That one got corrected around about the time Beech introduced the A-36 "straight tail" Bonanza. Second, it's a very fast and complicated aircraft, with many systems that were generelly not found on light aircraft of the day. A low-time pilot could very easily get behind the aircraft and crash while trying to troubleshoot a hydraulic problem or fly an instrument approach at speeds previously unencountered. When flown with the proper amount of respect and professionalism, it's no more dangerous than any other high-performance light aircraft.

Now, speaking of things Beech, did anyone mention the AZ Model D-17, the Hobbycrap Beech 18 (which really needs a nose job) and the Rareplanes King Air?

In other news, there are the Khee-Kha vacs for the bush plane brigade:

Fairchild 71

Bellanca CH-400 Skyrocket

Bellanca CH-300 Pacemaker

Wack YKS

Cessna 180/185

TravelAir 7000

Well!,

thanks gents for this little lot! Not a wide variation, admittedly, but enough to be going on with.

Odd that Heritage Aviation haven't had much mention with the various kites they do in 48th (my preferred scale).

The real Golden Era seems very poorly served indeed and they are in my opinion the nice ones!

Perhaps I'd better get busy with masters!

I don't know half the companies you mention, especially the ones in initials, so I have some googling to do!

Thanks again.

Coming close to (by conversion), civil like is Airfix Anson in 1/72 and some bigger ones I can't think of this late. FROG did the Airspeed Oxford.

I did have a Revell Bonanza once and I think a Mooney 20 or was it a Navion..or both??, around 1980ish.

FROG did the Short Sealand in a box scale.

Oh dear, sorry, jessica. You came up after my comment, though. I did think about it, but then realised I hadn't seen a lady's name anywhere. I can safely say, there's always one lady in these male dominated forums. There is just the one on slot car builder and just the one in a model railway group.

Nice to see you on here.

Aeroclub 1/72 Comper Swift, Klemm L25, Westland Widgeon, Pussmoth, Miles Messenger. The moulds for the Hornet Moth, Leopard and Gemini were never finished. This is why my company is called Aeroclub because thats the direction I wanted to go but eating became addictive and military types took over. You want to see my drawings library...

John

Ps, Heller Caudron Simoun. There were a number of German light types done in injection plastic some time ago.

Nice to hear from you, John and thanks for your lovely models over the years, I built a few vac-forms when retail therapy used to drag me into Hannants occasionally, under the guise of a family day at the seaside!

It's a great shame that you couldn't sell enough civil types. No chance of dropping the odd one or two into the range, still?

Hornet Moth and Gemini, particularly.

Cheers,

Martin

"Gummyfluegels", do you mean the LS-8, K-21 and Duo Discus

And I just discovered the Fisher Models kits of racing Sea Furies (and the basic Fleet Air Arm Fury and a 2 seater!) and a Mustang racer in 1/32nd. Pricey, for sure, but with one piece hollow cast fuselages and superb silk screen decals and of course Fisher's usual quality. They have always been right up there with their model cars and they appear to be doing an equally good job with their large scale aircraft. They also do a 1/48th scale Curtiss Page Racer.
