theplasticsurgeon Posted January 26, 2013 Share Posted January 26, 2013 (edited) Staring this Airfix Lancaster kit, with XtraDecal kit X72-098 for: No Enemy Plane Will Fly Over Reich Territory - as preserved at Hendon. Pretty much a standard build apart from the decals. Also I'm thinking of ways to get paddle props. Kit cost me £10 at RIAT Fairford in 2006. Anyway here are the bits. theplasticsurgeon Posted January 27, 2013 Author Share Posted January 27, 2013 (edited) Now for one of my GB traditions - others models similar to that I'm building: First a model from the BBMF set - bought from Argos in about 1988: Since given to a colleague, who's father flew in the tail turret during the war. Giving him great pleasure until he passed away in 2009. The model taking pride of place at the funeral. Next a Dambuster - the only Lanc that's ever been hijacked! The kit for this one was being sold cheap in a local newsagent. I umed and ahed, and didn't buy it. That night I decided that Yes I wanted it. That same night a neighboring shop was burned down - and the newsagents was closed with smoke damage. All surviving stock was moved to other stores in the same chain. Fortunately my mum knew someone who worked in her nearest equivalent. Arrangements ware made for this kit to go to her shop - so that mum could buy it on my behalf. She even got a staff discount (on top of the original cheap price)! It was all going tooo well when I visited her a few weeks later, expecting to collect this kit. When I asked, I was told that my sister had taken it - and reimbursed mum. Guess what my sister gave me for Christmas - which was a few weeks later!!!! Finally a Grand Slam Lancaster. theplasticsurgeon Posted February 1, 2013 Author Share Posted February 1, 2013 So much for the standard build - I've nicked the detailed driver's seat and most of the interior from my Revell kit My reckoning being that this is an H2S equiped aircraft - like the Revell kit.I've also used the Revell cockpit decals on this one, as this will have the requisite FOUR engines that match the dials. 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I'm less impressed with this kit now, than when I build my last Lancaster - that Grand Slam model. Let me tell you a story: Airframe is now assembled, apart from engine fronts. Liquid paper sorting all the seams. I've just found a way of fitting Revell paddle props to the Airfix engines.
