TESTORS JADE GRENADE

Testors 1/25 Jade Grenade . One of the Jimmy Flintstone contributions to the Testors lineup. I did start it a while ago but I am well under the 25% mark.

So we got resin , p/e , and white metal. Really bad instructions and 2 grainy pix of the completed prototype to work from.

The redeeming quality? A fine rendition of a Panhead Harley engine.

I usually do a build sheet to keep things in order.

I am not a fan of 'heavy' body work on custom bikes ,but Harley models are few and far between , so I grab the ones I can. Tjis one could stand some serious trimming but I kept it to trimming off the 'duckbills' on the fenders and smoothing out the fairing. Here are the parts marked for removal:

I'll be working on this for the next few days .I am going to do a green mettallic/metalflake paint job.

Well that looks rather tasty for a Harley, I do hope you are going to cover it in some suitably gawdy colour (JJ)?

As to Waynes question above, I've got a Revell RM Custon Torch kit which I've done a little work on. Which if I get the Kwaka done I might have a go at.

On and aside, it's a god job Revell don't make their car kits to the same samelessly shoddy standard, they would soon be out of business. If I'd known what was in the box i'd have left it on the shelf.

Thanks boys , metalflake green not gawdy enough heloman?

The Revell kits get good reps , I have them all ,they are Harley 'clones' , but with the extra wheels and custom parts represent good value as all Revell kits do. I've never built one I prefer the larger scales, with the obvious exception here. I do have plans to go over them showing how to add details and make them look a little more realistic , but not for a while.

The white metal for this kit is borderline , soft and hard to polish. The forks are not useable being twisted hopelessly. I made new tubes from .080" stainless tubing. I also drilled out the wheels to have a 1 piece axle. The headlight clear resin is in the bin as well , I drilled the fairing for MV lenses and will have to fab a clear acetate lens .

That, Krow, is way cool...

I always thought that the shape of the Jade Grenade would be something along the lines of what an Indian would look like if they made them today :analintruder:

Looking forward to seeing this finished.

Oh she be a mission alright. Thanks men.

I did manage to polish most of the white metal ,lots of surface removal to get through the pitting.

And prolly the ugliest frame ever ,gladly to be covered with the large body work:

Some color , black on the frame and Tamiya clear green on the engine and tranny.

Some deft work with a small q-tip and some thinner will cleanup the green. The parts were polished first.

Green day.

And cool p/e rotors and a weird chain with a belt pulley combo.

IMG_5244_zps5b806cb6.jpg

Mettalic green next , to simulate scale metalflake. Along with prolly 15 coats of Future to begin the smoothing.

Did get the green metallic on , too fine to represent metalflake however:

Some dark translucent green will finish this off nicely. Pearlescent finishes never photograph well , this does not show the iridescence of the finish.

Piling on a Future/Pearl mix results in a smooth glossy finish , manipulation of the parts while drying allows a thick coat to flow out nicely:

Translucent Dark Green still to go!

Hi Steve,

Nice glossy coats with Klear! :goodjob:

Dont you get any shrink back with it as I have not had great success with klear as a gloss finish?

here is a pic of my Bike as it is at the moment as it is a back burner project & will be worked on when I can.

The tail light is drilled out & the head lamps I am looking to use LED's grouped together.

The spiral wound wire at the front is the connection for the exhausts.

The wheels were spun in a model lathe & polished with fine wire wool & the front forks are s/s tube.

What we have here is a total lack of respect for the law!

Look forward to your updates.

Mark =Cool!

I have a different method for the Future, I pile it on and rotate the part , adding more , watching for the flash-off which , in proper temperature , takes 6-8 minutes , then adding more until there is a pool of material flowing around the part. There is a certain amount of shrinkage , like saran wrap , its hard to explain . Pile it on , watch for the 'blush' and rotate the part for even coverage, I call it a 'dynamic drying' technique. For these metalflake jobs , like real life, you need lots of clear coats to smooth things out.

Here is a 1/9 orange metalflake Triumph:

Thanks for the interest , I will advise on some of the kit troubles as I go , as it actually is kind of a 'grenade'.

I see you have already drilled the rear oil tank section of the frame for the backbone. There is a trough to lay this in , even then the panhead wont fit , I had to thin the underside of the backbone, and under the panhead , to get my engine in.

Thanks Natter. Future is cool stuff , one can pile it on almost endlessly to get the thick clear look.

Now we see the true look and color of the attempted paint job emerging:

IMG_5368_zpsd9b4cd70.jpg

4 of at least a dozen coats to go.

Oh yeah then some more Future!

Greener and greener.

IMG_5370_zps1498af5a.jpg

Almost time for the Future.

Final color coats were half/half green/Future mix. I will do the final clear coats after this sets.

Mark -I'm gonna pound this out ,I think you may want to watch as I work through it , just to see the issues I post.

I'm real happy right now as I just de-molded some parts I cast for the hillclimber .They are mint! Lots of thought and work into the set up for casting production has paid off!

Here are the parts cast for the Revell 1/8 series of Harley kits. One front two rear drive sprockets stock and competition:

Carb , magneto , intake manifold:

Primary drive belt pully's:

These are representations of HD competition parts available in the early 1970's. These are also pure 'test shots' so be nice you guy's!
