Tamiya 1/32 F-4J(UK) Phantom 74 Squadron

Recommended Posts

Just finished this literally yesterday. Although this kit has been around a few years now, with a little enhancement it still builds into an impressive model. Paints are from Gunze, the sidewinder caps and flags are from Aerobonus. The decals are from Yellowhammer, which I couldnt get in the UK and had to order them from the US. I used the Aires cockpit and exhaust, the cockpit needed a little work to get it to fit. The colour scheme of the J model F4's in UK service is a highly discussed topic as they were painted in US colours prior to delivery. This particular aircraft - ZE356 - was re-painted shortly after delivery to standard RAF Lo Viz scheme. I chose to depict an aircraft that represents an "Alert" aircraft hence the live weapons fit of Skyflash, Sidewinder and a central SUU-23 gun pod.

Beautiful Model. I have this kit and markings, but going to do mine without the black fin.

Hope mine turns out as lovely as yours did :-)

You mention the kit has been around a few years now and with accessories can be built into an impressive model! Well even without the accessories it is still a fabulous kit and makes up into a beauty for F-4 lovers. Your example though I must say is a show-stopper.....very impressive!

One day we may get a true British Phantom....soon I hope!

Thanks for all your positive replies, in response to Ashleys question, I believe Tamiya used an airframe with repair plates rivetted on the spine and around the flanks. Looking at references, these were not present on J model airframes destined for the UK, so I had to sand them off the fuselage mouldings. I opted to leave the ones above the exhaust nozzles as to be honest they didnt stand out as much as the others. Also I had to re-scribe some panel lines just aft of each engine intake and add a small repair patch to the starboard intake just forward of the roundel as in a photo of the real aircraft there is one present. Other than that, I left the fuselagte as Tamiya produced.
