Hi, Yeh I understand that the Anglian Regiment have taken ownership. Can anyone confirm?

I can see my old married quarter and the Tornado Maintenance School where I instructed.

Happy days.

For info the photos were taken recently by my brother from his Skyranger.

It certainly does bring back memories - spotting at the crashgate at the bend in the road all through the 80s & 90s, TTTE jets and exotic visitors galore, RIAT only an hour's drive from home (uber-win!), Leaping Heaps.... Then the final long, cold trudge across the field and round to the A1 end on that freezing, gloomy, overcast day in December to watch the last departures and arrivals, and the end of a type that'd been in service as long as I'd been alive. Comms with the MCO to try to get shots of the jets that had eluded me over the years, then the final opportunity to shoot the 'specials' that turned off short and bypassed the hundreds of toggies on the fence after the final flight. The escorted hangar tour, and subsequent amusement :). Been there, done that, and got the mug. Miss the place and the 'Heaps almost as much as Colt & the Jags...

I can remember as a spotty CCF caadet an orienteering exercise around the far end of the airfield in spring 1975 in the middle of a snowstorm and watching an Argosy disappearing into the murk almost as soon as the wheels had left the concrete.

I lived there...3 Rutland Square (right hand edge of the frame) back in the late 50s / early 60s. Dad will have plonked a 15 squadron Victor onto the tarmac many a time!

That brings back memories; did my airframe 'Q' course there back in '83 and dropped my Guzzi Le Mans in the wet on the peri' track (middle, left side of third picture) when we were on detatchment in'87

Had a few happy nights in the bowling alley followed by a burger from the TTTA (The Tornado Take Away ; I kid you not!) burger van :)

Kendrew Barracks is it's new name.

There is some local relevance to that: (Major General) Douglas Kendrew was originally an officer of the Royal Leicestershire Regiment ("The Tigers"), and played rugby union for Leicester, gained 10 caps for England, and toured with the Lions. I believe the former Leicester captain & Chief Exec (now Exec Director), Peter Wheeler, may be a local resident of Cottesmore.

It's worth noting that they've just put a notam out in the last couple of weeks (2nm/2000ft) prohibiting use and "discouraging" overflight.
