James G
I've made a little progress on this build since the last post, but I will be taking an indeterminate hiatus from this build. My wife and I will be moving to Sheffield in the new year as I have a new job there. We are in a rental flat for 3 months which necessitates a switch from aircraft modelling to figure modelling - I have a 1/16 US Infantryman to start on which should be up on here soon.... I'll re-start the Flanker when we have bought a new house and I have a proper modelling area!
tinleeds
Nice job here James! Keep going and hope to see you on Huddersfield show
James G
Well it's been quite a while since I posted on this topic. Rest assured it hasn't ground entirely to a halt.... Below are some pics of the figures I have painted to form part of the Flanker diorama. The photos of the unpainted figures show how much I had to modify them to get the correct poses for the diorama. The final result is satisfactory to my mind, they should look good on the diorama base (the poses will make sense then too!). I'm gathering all my materials and tools together in our new house, hopefully I will be ready to paint the Flanker soon. James
James G
Well, a major milestone has been reached....I've painted something! Below are photos. There are a lot of ancillary bits for this dio. This was the first time that I have used used AKAN paints and I am impressed, they went on really nicely. I'm not sure about the bottle size, bit concerned that I may run out when painting the main body of the aircraft. Hope you like the pics. James G
This project is still very much on the go! I've added the canopy, like everything else on this build it was tricky (it's a vac-form replacement) so it needed test fitting, fillings, sanding, re-filling, re-sanding, etc.! I still have to replace the lost panel lines. I tinted the windshield a subtle clear yellow, pleased with how this came out as it's easy to over-do. I also tried paint chippng using the hairspray method for the first time, it's given a nice worn look to the tool chest and scratchbuilt towbar. I also gave the PE ladders a coat of orange, and the red parts recieved some chipping. Everything still needs an oil wash and dry brush, but pleased with what I have done so far. Hope you enjoy. James G
I've made some progress, the gear doors and ladders, covers etc have been decaled and weathered (just need a matt coat). And the aircraft now has a primer coat. On an 8 week (or shorter) countdown until the little one arrives.... Â
exdraken
fantastic build so far! Â Â
James G
Thanks exdraken, and here is an update:  I've started painting patches of primer to show through the topcoat, and also pre-shading the underside. The top side will also get some pre-shading. I've shamelesly copied the techniques of Romain Flechon (rom1) on this one (Link). Thanks for the tips!
FZ6
Nice progress James, It's good so see some paint on the model. Â The ladder and tow bare are really impressive. Â Hope to see it in the flesh again at some point. Mark

James G
Evening all. Painting of the Su-27 continues apace. I have been painting panel by panel using a 0.15mm nozzle. I've got the first of 3 colours done (light blue on the top and undersides). I've tried to let a bit of the pre-shading and yellowish 'primer' colour show through...it' a bit stark but I'll knock it back with some weathering and filter coats. The only thing I forgot to do was paint the outside of the gear doors, doh! Â Â The following was also a useful guide for using AKAN paints: http://www.hobbycolours.com/blog/how-to-paint-plastic-model-with-akan-paint-using-airbrush/
James G
Hi All. Quick update before I head out for a curry! Underside has been blended and I'm calling done. I've painted the third camo colour on the top surfaces of the Su-27. The edges needs touching up, and then some more shading and highlights. But coming on....

James G
Hi Everyone. I've done a bit more to the Flanker. My plan/ambition is to at least get all the painting done by the time baby comes (due on April 21st but could come sooner!). I painted the grey inside the intakes, wasn't sure of the exact colour from the photos but Tamiya XF-20 looks about right to me. I mixed up a shade of Vallejo Model Air US Dark Green, plus a bit of the AKAN green shade to lighten it up (looks about right to me). The AKAN green says on the bottle it is for the radome, but it looks far too light/bright a shade when compared to photos. I used it on the wheel hubs and it looks right. Radome was pre-shaded brown and green added over the top, as well as to  the fin tips and dielectric panels. I was impressed by the nice sharp line I go with the white Tamiya curve masking tape, I very much recommend giving it a go. Hope you like the photos:  Engines and metallic areas next....
James G
Hi All. I'm calling the painting done on this one...pleased with how it turned out. The other parts in the tub are done. Ready for clear coating and decaling, but I might well be distracted for a bit as we are expecting a baby on Friday! Â Â
James G
Work has somewhat ground to a halt on this build due to the arrival of this little fellow: Â Â My son Arlo, who I'm hoping is a future modeller/aircraft enthusiast! I've managed to sneak in a bit of clear coating/micro-meshing on the Flanker when he and my wife are napping...hoping to get the decalling done in small dribs and drabs. Â Cheers all! James G
This build slowly rumbles on. I've got the decals on the underside which took ages as I am using a combination of the exhaustive Flanker stencil sheets from both Linden Hill and Begemot. The results are below. Same on top then it's on to weathering....

James G
Thanks for the nice comments guys! Hoping to grab a bit of time on it this weekend. Looking forward to working on the diorama part now.
