King Tiger 1/35

Well, what a pleasant experience so far! Apart from the tedium of cleaning up the mould seams on what seemed like 3,000 road wheels, it's quite different from 1/48 aircraft and just the break I needed (so far!)

Lion Roar seems somehow appropriate! :D

Indeed! Esp as my name is Ruari! :coat:

Anyway, more progress! The barrel is spot on, even managed to work out how it goes together as it comes with no instructions.

Barrel detail - well worth the extra dosh IMO!

The RB barrel is superb. Muzzle fitted to the barrel so well there was hardly any room for any CA. I would not hesitate to recommend this barrel, it fitted well into the Tamiya mantle too, only a little standing needed.

I'm loving this build so far!

I'm getting tempted myself to dip my toes into the world of armour! I haven't a clue how you go about building something like this so i'll be following you all the way with this one. If I do get round to building a tank it will by something German as like their aircraft they offer some wicked camouflage schemes. That am stuff looks sweet as, as well.

Cheers Tim, the A/M is pretty great, I think because it's a bigger scale. If we thought there was a lot of choice for aircraft, have a look at 1/35 accessories!

Construction is pretty straight forward, I'm quite pleased with how easily and well it all goes together.

I think the PE grilles are actually a misnomer, as it is more a grille cover, like a mesh.

I'm painting up the internals now, a home-mixed ivory for the turret and crew area, then a red-brown primer type colour for the engine bay. I'm not adding an engine or anything fancy (had some thoughts about 88mm ammo) so it's just the bay.

I'm going to spray the wheels separately, then add them to the lower hull, to ensure the paint coverage is even.

Thats coming along very nicely Ruari. Also good to see you getting into PanzerWaffe stuff. I can tell you its adictive. If you can get Miniature Modellings 'Guide to modelling the Tiger Tank' you will have all the reference material you will need for Tiger I and II's

Steve,It's well addictive! I know the few I have already are 'old' moulds, but I'm really impressed with the detail. I have a feeling that I'm going to be building more of these beauties in the future!

theres no need to cut off the grilles the mesh fits on top it was to stop infantry dropping grenades in the engine bay glad youre enjoying the kit armour modelling is as varied as wingy things , if you get into dioramas well theirs no limit to what you can make only your imagination will hold you back

Hood, good info there, I realised the mesh went over the grilles rather than replacing them, but didnt know why it was there!

On the same subject, does anyone know if the steel 'platform' (the same size as the mesh cover) that is mounted directly above the mesh, that Lion Roar includes, is accurate/much used in reality?

Ruari,

If you are talking about the plates I'm thinking about then they were a field mod to combat rocket attacks by Typhoons e.t.c. by making the rockets explode prior to hitting the engine deck, in a similar way to the schurzen plates hung on the side of Panthers e.t.c.

Then again I could just be talking through my hoop. :)

I think that was the general intention.....Wonder how well it actually worked?

It's a feature I've seen more often on Panthers, but I don't doubt it's appropriate for a late Kingtiger.

FWIW & All the best

Cheers Steve and Andy, that makes a lot of sense, but I think I'll keep it less complicated and omit them from this build.

The Lion Roar mesh is actually for the Dragon/DML kit, so a tiny bit of surgery was necessary to get the mesh to fit.

For some reason Picasa won't let me upload any pictures, so updates will have to wait!

Uploaded with Fotki;

Mesh detail, there are two extra mesh 'racks' not in the pic, which slot over the forward two rectangular grilles.
