Marine landing!

Hi Guys, this is a project I've been working at off and on for the last few months more fur fun than anything else.

Bought this small set of marine vehicles in 1/350 scale, when getting the Trumpeter USS Independence. Technically they should go with the Wasp LHD, but I thought they looked cool.... might build a small beach landing diorama as I got a pair of LCACs also.

These are actually fun little things. Hope I still feel the same after trying to paint them.

The only changes I made were to the two howitzars. Made in accordance to the instructions they have the legs in travel mode and the barrel in firing mode. A little surgery and I now have one each in full travel or firing mode.

The vehicles were base coated and then I started on the LCAC. At this stage it was only dry-fitted but you get the general idea and the scale from the little Humbrol tinlet:

Plus I attracted an audience. At leaset he had no hairs to shed on any wet paint:

LCAC1.jpg

With the first LCAC complete...just need to dirty up the deck with tyre and track marks....not that much will be seen when it's loaded

LCAC6.jpg

The vehicles almost ready. The left one in each pair has been weathered:

While a rather pointless build it has actually been fun...and good practice for the USS Independance

So went back to this fun project which has been stalled. Took one of the MH60S from the USS Independence kit:

Trying to mask and paint those windows will probably kill me! The tip I got, as it's all clear plastic, is mask the windows then undercoat in black before the grey coat. This will give the impression of an interior...allegedly! We'll see how that goes.

The other LCAC is actually coming along quite well to be in the lowered off-loading position. Paint was wet so I didn't move it to photograph last night.

The current thoughts are eventually to do an A4(ish) size dio of a beach landing. May also get the Marine Air Support set so I can have Harriers flying close support....

Anyway, hopy you like what's done so far.

Cheers

Sean

A few of comments

The LCAC can only just carry 1 M1A1, so if that is the load nothing else can be used.

The M60A1 is no longer used by the USMC.

The AAV7 is fully amphibious so can swim ashore on its own, so usually it would not be carried on an LCAC.

White Ensign do a PE details set -

Thanks Niall,

I wasn't sure on the load for an LCAC, so haven't decided on the load-out yet. And the M60's do look a bit dated so were probably going to get omitted anyway. I know the AAV7 is an anphip.....plan to have one on the beach and one in the water...may get another set to increase numbers.

As for the WE PE set: no thanks....I find PE in 1/35 enough of a challange :-)

EDIT:

I knew there were limits, but hadn't looked them up yet. Just found them now:

12 HMMWVs per sortie

4 LAVs per sortie

2 AAVs per sortie

1 M1A1 per sortie

4 M923 per sortie

2 M923 5-Ton Trucks,2 M198 Howitzers, and 2 HMMWVs per sortie

Very interesting information and pictures at: http://www.fas.org/programs/ssp/man/uswpns/navy/landingcraft/lcac.html

The sets are Trumpeter sets TP64005 (2 x LCACs) TP64004 (8 vehicles x 2 of each) and TP64003 is the air group which I haven't got yet. Packaging on each though is branded MRC.

Hi Niall, thanks for the tip, if you'll excuse the pun. I actually used a white-board marker for the windows but a finer tip would have been better.

Hi Courtney. Yes, the stripes are decals and were a pain to lay down they're so fine. Colours are all from the instructions. Would it be normal to tone down in this scale? I've never done anything this crazy before. My normal preference is 1/35 modern stuff like Humvee's & Strykers

Hey Steve, how ya doing?

I'll bring then to the October branch meet and a magnifying glass! Then you can scale down your gear by a factor of 10

Through purchases, swaps and donations the fleet has been growing and has now reached critical mass. Time to start working on it seriously. So now it's at 2 LCUs, 5 LCACs, lots of vehicles and an air wing of 2 Harriers, 2 Cobras, 4 MV22s and 6 MH60s

This smacks of one of those simple ideas that quietly grows until you are left, late at night, sitting looking at the amassed "stuff" thinking, "what was I thinking?" "Where will I put it?" &

"What's SHE going to say this time?"

Good idea though! :banghead:

As a break from the Buffalo slat I got back to this one. As I said previously I have too many projects on the go that I keep switching between so progress will be slow.

Started putting the air wing together. Given the size I couldn’t mask the windows so very slowly with a very fine brush painted around them. Quite happy with how they came out. Rotors are just dry fitted at this point. Some more detail painting and weathering to do next, as well as a lot more aircraft. There are also a few decals to go on.

And the rest of the vehicles base coated. This is about half of what I will be using. Also managed to do the wheels on the Humvees. Still lots more wheels, tracks, windows etc to do....

GHQ do a range of 1/285th figures & vehicles which used to be much better models, some of the heroics stuff was not very good whereas the GHQ stuff was always stonking, you're talking Airfix Spitfire uno and Eduards latest here, at least.

The GHQ range are much too big to be compatible with 1/350th scale.

The GHQ range are made from masters which are made using CNC cutting machines. Heroics and Ros(and Scotia Micromodels) are made from hand made masters! The older H&R models are a bit crude but the newer ones are as well detailed as GHQ.
