RAF Vickers VC-10 K2

Recommended Posts

I will hopefully be making the Airfix VC-10 K2 kit, with Braz engines plus markings from Liveries Unlimited plus kits ones to make an aircraft that flew in Op Granby (1st Gulf war). Pictures to follow in the next couple of days.

one of the reasons I will be following this build is I have all the above material, except the crowood book....

The Empire Strikes Back is on my to-do list one day.

Not yet - just one day :)

After finishing my so-called latest creation I finally got started on this last night by glueing the wings together. I also cut out the bar in the lower wing U/C bay area so that the main U/C would be able to retract into the fuselage. I have stuck the bulkhead into one fuselage half and was going to add weight to the nose area when I found that the plastercine that I had was for some reason or other non mouldable. So it was of f to the shps this morning to get some more, and hopefully I will add this tonight. I am not sure as to rescribe this model or not as I think that the lines that I do scribe maybe a bit on the large size for the scale. Pictures will follow.

Have got the fuselage joined together, and like Enzos model it does have a slight step along the joint which filler will take care of. I have inserted the flight decal window as I will be using the decal sheet ones. I have also shown a photo of the fuselage with the already mated wings. So a bit of sanding to do, followed by the removal of the engine stub wings in preparation for the Braz engines.

Looking forward to this coming together. :clap2:

I would really like to get my hands on a VC-10 kit and make it up as a RAF a/c. I'll just have to wait for it to be re-issued, hopefully.

I have only done a little to this one this week. The fuselage is sanded down, and I have removed the kit enigine nacelle attachment points and the resuling hole filled in in preparation for the Braz ones. I have also decided to do a small amount of rescribing and that is to the speedbrakes on the wings as these are really major lines whilst the rest would come out overscaled. I think that someone else is also doing this and this is what gave me the plan to do this, so thanks to them. Once the rescribe has been done I will attach the wings followed by the engines, but it maybe the other way around.

That's looking good Jabba, a very tidy build so far. Once the Braz engines are on it makes a massive difference to the overall look.

Keep up the good work!

I would do the re-scribe first as the engines are bound to get in the way.

That was done last night, just need to think about wether to fit either the wings or the engines first.

Thanks. Did a dry fit of the engines last night and there seem to be big gaps in the centre of each one. I will try and fit the engines and hopefully fill in the gap and not loose too much resin when sanding down.

little more progress with this one. Before joining the wings to the fuselage I like most other people making this model cut a slot in each wing for the fence that will fit in there. I wish that someone could come up with the proper dimensions. The joints have also now been filled in and will be sanded down later. Next is the job that I am not really looking forward to and that is the fitting of the engines.

you may not be looking forward to it, but based on the above, you'll do the same neat and tidy job

I have faith in you.

Here are some photos of the Braz engines fitted onto their supports. They have not been glued at the moment as I would like some advice as to whether they are in the correct place or not. All I have gone by are the lines that I drew on the model acting as front, back and centre lines of the plastic that was there in the first place. Help would be very much grateful.

If they look right to you then they are right

I know what you mean, but sometimes you just want someone else to have a slightly more critical look at things rather than relying on your own eyesight, which mine is not the best at times.

I'm not really expert enough to comment except to say they look ok to me

Otherwise, just check them against photo refs and if they look right to you....etc. :)

Thanks that will do for me. What I really did not want is to see that after I had glued them on, one engine pointing skywards with the other pointing towards the ground.

I think you've done a good job on your Conways, they look fine to me. I have to say aligning the Braz engines is not easy as the mountings cant both downwards slightly towards the rear, and upwards at the front toward the engine casings. I used the Corgi diecast C.1K to help set mine up so I hope Hornby have got it right!

Good luck with the build.

Again thanks for having a look for me. I took off the Stbd engines and made the front hole for its support pin a little larger as I had noticed the front of these engines drooped slightly. It was then positioned back on the model, adjusted and glued in position along woth the Port unit. Should get some filler on these areas tonight.

Engine nacelles have been filled in and I have started to sand them down. I have been looking at some photos and noticed that Airfix have added one fuselage window too many on each side. These have now been filled in and sanded back. I will also start to rectify the so called rear nose U/C door over the next few days into something better resembling the real thing. Some photos hopefully tomorrow.
