"Cold Wind" German Infantry, 1941-1942

This is a new set from the folks at Master Box, and it depicts a group of five German Infantry soldiers trudging along in cold inclement weather, exactly as depicted on the box top. They all wear great coats and two also wear winter smocks over the top for added warmth and protection. Four of the figures are depicted in a slightly head-down into-wind pose, whilst the fifth is stopped, possibly looking behind for stragglers or the enemy.

Inside the standard figure-sized box are two sprues of a sandy coloured styrene, individually wrapped to prevent chaffing. Each figure is made up of two separate legs with smooth uppers to accept the tails of the great coats, a separate torso, arms and head. Some even have an insert between the head and body that depicts a turned up collar and scarf ensemble, further adding to the sense of cold. Hunched shoulders and arms tight to their chests also help with the premise, and the tails of the great coats are also moulded as if blown by the wind in places.

Weapons consist of a trio of KAR98s, an MP40 (incorrectly known colloquially as a Schmeisser), and a pair of MG34 machine guns, the scourge of any enemy of the Reich. Water bottles, grab-bags, entrenching tools, ammo boxes of various types and sizes, and even the occasional gas-mask canister are also included on the two sprues. Five standard German helmets are included, although two of the characters are moulded wearing cloth forage caps, so will have them slung around their person in case of an engagement.

A full painting and construction guide is printed on the rear of the box, together with a picture and numbering chart for the two sprues.

Conclusion

It’s a great set with plenty of humanity moulded into the figures, so that you can almost see them suffering from the rigors of the cold weather. They would be ideal for a diorama from the Russian campaign as defeat starts to look inevitable, and retreat begins. Great detail on each figure, and plenty of accessories to personalise the look of each one. Separate heads are a godsend to the figure enthusiast, which makes it easy to replace stock heads with the more unique looking Hornet heads to add a little more animation to the faces.

Highly recommended.
