F-32
Hi all, I've always been a console flight sim fan (Ace Combat etc) but find myself craving more realism....................such as being able to take off and land! I want to be able to fly a better variety of aircraft instead of the standard F-14 / 15 / 16 / 18 group. This means moving over to PC flight sims but to be honest I don't know where to start. I'd like to be able to download different aircraft (Lightnings, Voodoos, Victors etc) and to carry out missions but I'd also like the opportunity to just fly around if that's what I fancy. Any help you can give would be appreciated!
Scarlet
Not a Flight Sim expert but I use FS9 and am quite happy with it. Got a few downloads for it (Hawk, Lightning, Tornado, Nimrod, C-130, Jaguar, Buccaneer and a few others) plus some scenery and my PC just about copes. The better the PC you have the more you'll be able to do. I have no experience with FSX though, over to someone else for that.
Moofles
What you looking for, combat, modern, WWI, WWII? Personally you cannot go far wrong with the current Strike Fighters 2 series. Aircraft starts at early 1950s and goes on into modern day. Heavily modded support comunity over at acecombat. worth having a look see.
SPerx
FS9 has a mass of add-ons and it not too resource hungry in terms of PC / Memory/ Graphics. I find FSX to be hungrier. Also, if you want more choice of scenery and aircraft, I think FS9 continues to offer the widest choice of free download add-ons via Flightsim.com; Simviation; UK Mil; and many other specialist sites. Its a while now since Microsoft launched FSX and I don't know if a new release is scheduled. If there is, the one certainty is that it will be even more resource hungry. phildagreek
I use FS9 now and then, I like it. I got FSX and whilst there were definite improvements, they weren't that great and it did slow up the computer. There is a new "free" version of Microsoft flight sim online but is apparently limited. You can pick up FS9 pretty cheap on the net and the basic version is good. www.justflight.com will show you just what is available and to wet your appetite! cmatthewbacon
You could have a look at X-Plane... http://www.x-plane.com/desktop/landing/ amazing variety of aircraft and more coming all the time; great community; fly some really weird stuff in really weird places if you want; and $80 is a pretty resaonable price for all the stuff you get! bestest, M. Murdo
If you get FSX Gold it comes with the Expansion pack and that allows catapult take off and arrested landing (CATOBAR) from moving carriers. There is some fantastic freeware out there for it such as the the Sludge FA/18 Hornet

My Dad likes his Flight Sim, he's currently running FS9. He bought a copy of FSX when it came out, and despite his PC having a Quad Core - 4GB ram - 1GB Graphics, he/we still can't get it to run on anything other than the lowest setting. Pielstick
If you're coming from console flight games then I agree the Strike Fighters 2 series is probably the best choice. It's fairly simple as far as PC flight sims go but still has enough complexity and realism to be satisfying. The SF2 series has several installments and it's possible to install them all over the top of eachother to give you access to all the aircraft and all the theatres in one sim. If you're starting out I'd recommend you pick up SF2 Europe and then download the NATO Fighters 4+ mod from Ace Combat. That should satisfy any cold war jet desired you have. If you find yourself liking the sim you can add the other installments to add more aircraft and theatres. One word of warning though - hang fire on the new Strike Fighters 2 North Atlantic. It's still got some teething problems and is best avoided for the time being.
