Correction Sets

For the academy kit there have been a number of sets to correct the "heavy" looking nose. Daco is one that comes to my mind, but I'm sure there was another one. Personally I believe these don't really correct the shape enough and the best solution is an aeroclub Mk.21 fuselage.

If you just need the propeller, quickboost has one and they also have the upper engine cowling with exhausts.

I'm not aware of any set to correct the chin intake of the Airfix seafire. Quickboost again has the upper cowling in resin (correcting the shape of the rocker covers)

There was at least one thread here discussing the Seafire 47 chin intake, with, I believe, Jon Kunak-Tabinor (did I get that right? "Jonners", anyway) proposing a method to use kit parts. If I'm really diligent I'll hunt up a link...

Ron's Resin used to do a nose, prop and radiator upgrade for the XIV. Think it's OOP but they do turn up now and again. Got mine from Snowy Mountain Models in Melbourne, who unfortunately went bust in Oct 2010. Roy Sutherland has done a correction kit for the FR47, which is geat quality and very comprehensive.

Replacement for the spitfire 14 nose for academy kit is available from DACO http://ultra.glo.be/daco/KSpit.html

Hope this helps

I'd be a bit wary of the Daco set. I bought two of them some years back and found that the nose was a blatant rip-off of the inaccurate Airfix F22/24 part and the underwing radiator housings were inaccurate in plan form.

Now I see that the set has apparently been updated as of two years ago (after I bought it and let Daco know what I thought of it). But from what I can see on the photo on the linked page, the radiators are still curved in plan view – quite wrong, in other words.

So, exercise some care before buying, would be my advice.

I've used this technique and was quite happy with the result. It wasn't a perfect fix, but it was a big improvement on the otherwise over-heavy chin. It was in other areas that I buggered the kit up!

That review is 13 years old… ;-) And I think the only way to get Roy's Seafire kit would be to pay an exorbitant price on Ebay. It's not included in the kits listed on his current website, http://barracudacals.com/products.php?cat=14.

Best,

The original 1/48 Cooper Details resin Seafire 47 exterior set had the correction for the chin intake, amongst many other things that allowed some refinement of an already-nice kit. I believe those parts/patterns were sold to Compass Rose, who had also released the 1/48 Wyvern detail sets, from patterns done by Roy Sutherland.

It is my understanding that eventually the late Spitfire/Seafire upgrade sets will be released as entirely new sets from Roy's Barracuda Studios in the future.

I searched for Airfix+Seafire and got pages of returns which seemed to include anything mentioning Airfix. Grr!

The search function isn't brilliant, but the solution to that is to use +airfix +seafire - it should then find only threads that have both words. Using "airfix seafire" will produce only threads that have that exact phrase.

That is the best piece of modelling news I've seen for a long time! Roy's sets are in a class by themselves.
