I'll have a large slice of this one! the sad saga of this kit started in 1999 0r 2000 i can't remember exactly, whilst at beltring for the war and peace show. I was inspired by all the real life ferrets whizzing around I bought this kit on the spot from accurate armour as they where there for the MAFVA nationals. it's been slowly progressing from then on really although i have not looked at it for the last three years. during the last eight years some bits have been lost but the resin has stood up well to the neglect it has received.

I am planning to do this in a BATUS range safety colour scheme just to add a bit of colour to the thing in the hope this will spur me on to finish the pesky bugger!

wish me luck!

well after a few hours of searching I have only managed to come up with one picture of a range vehicle and that was in one of my books! however I have a good description of the colour scheme as well so I think I will do a recce safety vehicle which has yellow markings. the plus side is that a lot of the fittings are left off the real vehicles such as fuel cans etc.

Pete, from my time at BATUS, 80-82, the Range Safety FSC's were o/all standard green with the turret, outer panel of the RHS stowage bin between the wheels and a plywood panel hung over the spare wheel mounting painted dayglo red with the vehicle call sign in large black figures. The turrets were reversed and the rear flap down as the commander had to remain inside the vehicle after we lost one when his Ferret rolled with him sitting on the lowered rear turret flap.

The gun was not fitted to these vehicles and some had the vertiacal part of the hull rear panel also painted dayglo.

Most of the RS Ferrets had 7.62mm holes in the dayglo bits as they were just too tempting to ignore!!!!

Gordon at Cromwell Models does a lovely Ferret. The detail is superb!

Pete, Enjoy the build mate. I drove one of these occasionally. Great wee vehicles.

right been working away at the hull yesterday evening and today. More added bits from brass wire to enhance and also replace missing items. Also delved into the spares box for the wing mirrors. PSP sheet had to be made from plastic card as I had none and I scratched the broom on the front. Next it's going for a little wash and dry then painting tomorrow hopefully

Like it alot!

As said before, like the detail of the brush, never a moment waisted when you can get the squaddie to do a bit of area cleaning!!

Are they going to be bullet holes in the wheel cover? I had a mate who came back from BATUS who told me that when they were live firing and the tankies came through they would shoot up the kit bins on the tanks, to break up the boardom and to p*ss the tankies off! He told me it used to come over the radio net (my mate being a radio man) that the tankies would all be complaining at being shot at!! I would think the range safety vehicle would be a prime target!!

cheers guys and gal! the broom was made using plastic rod and card and the bristles from an old shaving brush. OzH yep they are bullet holes in the call sign board. As you have said the range vehicles being a bright colour where a very tempting target!

yeah it did pee us off a bit , when we bivvied up for the night and your sleeping bag was shreddied nylon and a pile of feathers covered in shaveing foam, the only time i know of one of my mates being injured, he was looking through the loaders periscope wich got clipped spun round and gave him a killer black eye, but we did shoot a Canadian on that scheme he ran through us and took 3 7.62 rounds to the side and arm lucky for him he survived to be presented with a regimental plaque.

Can't stop this build, this KUTA idea is great! sprayed the yellow areas after first putting down a base layer of white. After masking I have used tamiya field grey for the main colour then adding some tamiya flesh gone over the model again to givesome shading/ highlights. I must say it's looking quite striking now, more soon

cheers all, well slow progress at the moment, I'm waiting for some letraset sheets and archer dry transfers to arrive so I can add the call signs and the vehicle registration number. Hopefully they should be here tomorrow.

Tis all decaled up and ready for weathering, the white "duck" on the hull side was painted on when a vehicle got bogged down so I thought I'd add one to my ferret.

wethering will consist of filters, pin washes and lots of pigments!

This is the kind that always seem to end up in childrens play parks or garden centres, until now I didn't know what they were actually called. I climbed into one somewhere, can't remember where it was, but it was horrible inside, really pokey and claustrophobic and sharp edges everywhere. I can't imagine what being under fire in one would be like :o

Some excellent progress (getting to the point) Snipes, I'd love it if you could do a step by step with the filters and pin wash thing - I've never gotten my head around that concept :fraidnot:
