Madman
I am back in town Here is un update of the Stringbag diorama, one month after I moved to a new house. The Swordfish did not like the move! It cashed, the float struts broke, and curiously there was a left-over of uncured resin that started smudging the surface of the water. There was no easy way out... No easy fix, but tear up the diorama! So I removed the plane from its floats (actually it broke away, along with the torpedo). Not much dammage here that some CA could not fix... The braces were a problem: on one side they stayed with the floats, on the other side with the plane. I had to find an appropriate temporary display stand. Floats: I had to cut the rudder command cables. Now how to remove them from the resin? Mode "DEMOLISH-MADMAN" ON Heavy tools for modellers: saw, screw-driver, hammer, curses, explosives... Slowly the float detaches... YESSSSS !! A lot of damage, and it was hard to remove the sticky resin Cutting it up liquified most of the resin, and I had plenty of blotches smearing the float, my hands, the tools, the workbench, the floor :( Heavy maintenance work in my new modelling room The pieces of s**t you can see on the right side is the left-over of the unfortunate diorama. The second float came out far easier than the first Hardly any damage... Goo Gone is quite efficient at removing messy residues. I was happy to have some left for the job. Singing in the rain..... Milliput surgery! There is nothing that cannot be repaired... Building of a new frame. I decided against commercial photo frames, and built my own one, square, with real wood from real trees Who framed Roger Rabit ? For a change, I pictured this rose in my garden
Madman
Rebuilding the floats. The repairs are fine, I am quite happy with the results! While the second layer of putty dries, I varnished the frame. The floats are repaired. A few bumps left over here and there, but real floats would not be different Rainy weather I reattach the struts that were torn off during the move. There we are: the Swordfish is fully restored Now let's build a new diorama... Building the new jetty... I got bored by today's Euro soccer games, so I went back to the workbench Edited June 11, 2008 by Madman
PetrOs
Thats a pity it got damaged in a move ;( But it is also a tremendous effort you did to repair it, and the effort which really repaired it! I know how hard it is to see a virtually-done-masterpiece get broken... I have myself got a large 1/72 diorama fallen down, getting totally demolished, and still awaiting repairs... Dr_Fester
Pierre this project is making my Swordfish diorama look pants, stop it ! Really though well done on the recovery, I know just what you went through having to removing my Stringbag from the resin to rescue it. Thoughts of buying another kit just for the floats did cross my mind . Hope all is well in the new home, looks like you have modelling den sorted anyway. AnonymousER99
Awesome recovery Madman!! I like the noting cannot be repaired attitude. This one would have met the bin in most modelers homes I would guess. I envy your perseverence and cannot wait to see it redone!! Mike

Oliver
WOW!!! It was an amazing diorama and finish before. If I had somehow managed to build something that good and it broke, i'd just go and find the nearest bridge and jump! Can't wait to see the diorama Mk.2 completed....but please don't let it get broken this time my heart can't take it.

Mike
You must have felt like crying when that masterpiece in the making got broken. Brilliant save though, and I bet you learned a few things in the process. Milliput is great stuff, isn't it?

Madman
Thanks Dude for the kind words in your very first post to Britmodeller Here come two trout cooking recepices. First menu, with an acetate skeleton. Second menu: with a brass skeleton. The advantage is that you give it mouvement. Note the ventral fins, soldered. Now I will add the flesh. Bon appétit! Sgt.Squarehead
Jesus H Christ on a bike, Mohammed on a moped and Buddha on the bus! I just blindly followed a link to this thread and I am now utterly staggered by your beautiful Stringbag, horrified by the damage that had to be done and astounded by your masterful rebuild! I was joking about it being a real Swordfish parked in your garden pond.....Until I saw the etched brass :fish:! Amazing!
