  1. Hey everyone I've been busy beavering away on my Revell (Hasagawa) Phantom F.4M (FGR.2) and I'm loving it, but as my work is starting to quieten down I've suddenly had the urge to build a Tornado. I have the Revell Tornado IDS in the stash and me being me I priced up the AM I want for it and it comes to over £60.00, I nearly pulled the trigger and bought it all, that was until I remembered that I have the Eduard (Revell) Tornado F.3 in the stash that comes with a load of AM as standard - so I'll hang fire on spending more money for now (I say for now coz I WILL get all the AM I can for my IDS variant and build it as a RAF Tornado).. Anyway a shot of the Box art... I'll make a start on her later, after the rugby and I've finished with my Phantom for today. Cheers Iain
  2. Hello all, Here is my entry for this GB. As per the title, I'll be replicating two aircraft that have had responsibility for the Northern QRA for the United Kingdom - the Tornado F.3 and Eurofighter Typhoon. Both these kits were initially part of my 'RAF QRA through the years' project but that was getting a bit long in the tooth and having recently visited Lossiemouth, playing about with my first proper DSLR camera and various lenses, I wanted to build these separately. So without much further ado; Kits: The Typhoon will be marked as ZK306 of 1(F) Squadron at RAF Lossiemouth in 2019. Typhoon sprues and bits: Aftermarket wise, I'll be using Eduard etch, Airwaves resin seat, Phase Hanger Resin FOD inserts, Eduard masks and various Xtradecal sheets to cobble together the markings for ZK306. Will be loaded with 4x AIM-132 ASRAAM (2 from the spares), 4x Meteor (although pictures of the recent QRA launches that I've seen, the jets appear only to be fitted with the 4 ASRAAM) and 2x gas bags. The Tornado will be marked as ZE158 of 111(F) Squadron at RAF Leuchars in the mid 2000s. Tornado sprues and bits: For aftermarket, I'll be using Eduard etch, Pavla resin seats, Master pitot tube, Model Alliance decals, New Ware masks and resin BOL rails. I also have some HGW remove before flight tags if I decide to make FOD covers for this one. Will be fully loaded with 4x AIM-132 ASRAAM (donated by a kind member, forgive me, I forget who!), 4x AIM-120 AMRAAM and 2x gas bags. Finally, I'm sure some of you know I like a good patch: I know the centre patch is a bit off for 1 Squadron as it depicts 43 Squadron alongside 111 Squadron but I like it too much not to include it here These kits have a bit of a reputation for not being the easiest to build (I can confirm as such for the Typhoon anyway) but I've been wanting to do them for a while so looking forward to getting started. Dave
  3. Tornado F.3s at Red Flag 93-1, Nellis AFB, November 1992. ZE763 29 Squadron ZE907 23 Squadron ZE961 25 Squadron ZE962 25 Squadron ZE982 11 Squadron Thanks for looking, Sven
  4. My contribution to this group build, the 1/48th Italeri Tornado F.3, marked as Royal Air Force 111 Squadron on deployment to Prince Sultan Air Base, Saudi Arabia in 2003. I struggled a bit with the personal connection and 'iconicness' of the Tornado F.3. I live in the UK so guess that counts. Also have wanted to build a Tornado ADV for some time. For me the Tornado F.3 is iconic because it is the last British interceptor from the Cold War, first entering service in 1987, and took part in Operations Granby and Telic. I also remember the 56 (R) Squadron Tornado F.3 Display for 2005 which was very memorable. I did build the Italeri Tornado IDS kit a few years ago and it turned out well although did take some effort, so hopefully the same here. On to the photos:
  5. Hi M8's finished these some time back, nothing special, no added etch or resin, Just out of the box as these go up in the loft to be slowly broken over the years. Used additional decal from Model Alliance for both jest. The Lightning bolts broke up which necessitated a replacement sheet. Of course that scheme pops up in the Revell boxing so could of saved me the 16 quid of a reorder for the new set. :/ AWC Jet.
  6. I started these last year as part of the STGB Memorial Build for fellow Britmodeller Merv Milliken (Spike7451). I wanted to try and represent each nation that operates the Tornado and was keen to include an F.3 example. I scratch built some of the missing details such as the Secondary Heat Exchanger intake and other bits relevant to the aircraft modelled. Decals for the Luftwaffe ECR and the RAF F.3 are from the kits with some additional stencilling from a Hannants Xtradecal sheet. The Italian and Saudi examples came from Mark1's book of twelve Tornados I didn't get them over the line for that GB, so when the KUTA VIII GB came along at the back end of the year I decided that I would try to complete them for that. That GB finished a couple of weeks ago and here are the finished models. Tornado ECR 2011 Tigermeet - Revell 1/144 Tornado F.3 RAF 56 R Squadron (Firebirds) - Dragon 1/144 Tornado ECR Italian Air Force - Revell 1/144 Tornado IDS Royal Saudi Air Force - Revell 1/144 And finally a shot of all four together I had a lot of fun putting these together and I'm sure that there are lots of things that Merv would have pointed out had he still been with us, but I am pleased with the way they turned out. Apologies to those who followed these builds for repeating the photos here, but I wanted to share my efforts with the people who may not venture to the GB pages. Thanks for looking in. 7. This is my entry for KUTA VIII, four 1/144 Tornado's one from each of the countries that operate them. They were started for Merv's memorial GB and whilst a couple were close I failed to complete them by the date. I know that the GB remains open ended to allow further updates, but I want to get them finished off and this will hopefully give me the drive to do that. Two of the entries may be considered a little to advanced and if that is the case then I will gladly refrain from updating those, but here goes. First up is Dragons 1/144 F.3. This is the most advanced of the builds and needs the undercarriage doors and pylons adding, plus some paint touch up before a final varnish. The second model is Revells 1/144 Luftwaffe ECR and this needs tail planes, weapons, undercarriage doors and again a varnish coat Third is an Italian ECR and needs a lot more work than the other two and finally the model that is furthest behind is this, a 1/144 RSAF IDS
  8. I was not fortunate enough to know Merv, having joined Britmodeller after the last Tornado GB, but by all accounts he seemed to be the type of person that I would have liked to have known and could have got along well with. I have set myself quite a challenge for this GB and my plan is to to try and build four 1/144th Tornado's, one each from the four operators. This is my RAF entry and will be mainly be buit from the box with the exception of a Retrowings replacement cockpit.
  9. Does anyone know of a source for 1:48 scale decals for a 5 Sqn Tornado F.3? eg:
