  1. Hello there BritModeller Community! It is with great pleasure to present to you my second take on building this classic Monogram kit. So much has happened since it was delivered to me after purchasing on eBay 24 years ago. I gained a ton of weight, lost a ton of weight, got married, bought a house, raised two kids, both of whom are in college and have rekindled my passion for this hobby. My first attempt at this kit was back in the late 70's; I was a wee lad with more enthusiasm than skill. I hurriedly built the aircraft, rushing to start that unique Lemon Yellow paint job on the wings. I "completed" the model but believe me it was a true example of enthusiasm over skill by a pre-teen. Brush strokes abound, broken parts, not a page of reference material and lots of nasty Testers glue marks all over it, I was proud to say it was done. Then of course, I blew it up with some well placed fireworks. Fast forward to 2000 and I am starting to dip my toe in the water around restarting this hobby. Naturally, the first kit that came to mind to try was that Monogram Devastator kit. A quick search on eBay uncovered the kit new in the box and a few days later I started in on it. Then life happened. I met my lovely bride and all my spare time was spent chasing her. I got as far as masking the canopies before putting it down to start that new chapter of my life. Last year I posted my first build after that very long hiatus and went back to working on the Devastator. How times have changed. There are tons of tutorials available on YouTube, some money in my pocket to by some aftermarket decals or resin torpedo kit I happily plowed forward until finally it's done. I've joined my local chapter of the IPMS and brought it to our last meeting. I immediately see ALL those flaws that I will fix on my next project but for now, this is a best I could do. More importantly, I LEARNED so many new techniques and got to try all them on this build. As you go through the photos, it'll become very apparent that BritModeller's very own @dnl42 provided MASSIVE amounts of inspiration, information and just plain guidance as I puzzled my way through the build while referencing theirs. Let me know what you think and I look forward to posting images of my next build., Tamiya's 1/72 Messerschmitt BF-109E 4/7 Trop. Cheers!
  2. Although I love building German aircraft I try not to do Swastikas so in looking for a suitable scheme I came up with various Do17Ka’s or A Hungarian Do 215. Both require a conversion. So I’ve decided to go for the Ka-1, which only needs the main canopy and nose changed. First off a comparison to scale plans. Actually pretty good, the leading edges of the horizontal tail needs reshaping but other than the new nose a good match. Next up a little surgery
  3. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so: But I'll have to say a few words about this build, if you don't mind. It's my first completed kit of the year, and the build actually started back in December 2015. There is quite a lengthy and detailed WIP here, if anyone's interested in. It also explains the origins of this project, which I'm going to summarize here: it's a tribute to my friend Gene K (here on BM), who is the actual pilot of this very aircraft, and who donated the two kits I used for this build (Hasegawa 1/72 F-4J and Monogram 1/72 F-4C/D), plus some various other bits I'll mention later. The WIP thread has seen the participation of many others, among which I was very thrilled to have two other former pilots, like Fritag and Old Viper Tester, a former Phantom Phixer - DuncanB, and many others which offered their help, directions, advice and support. All in all, I learnt a bunch of things from this build (main reason why I do WIP threads, BTW ) The build: the idea was to use the HASEGAWA F-4J kit as a base, being it the best rendition of the mighty Phantom in this scale (the J because it's much easier to source it as opposed to the HASE C or D kits), and spice it up using some details from the MONOGRAM F-4C/D kit (unsurpassed details for a plastic injection kit this scale, IMHO), such as: - full cockpit - tail hook - air brakes - wing tanks - gun pod - pilots! In addition, I have used: - Aires exhaust nozzles - Eduard RBF tags - Airwaves PE detail set for the canopies and: - specific SANDY BAY-BEE decals (donated by Gene K) - Phantom stencils (donated by Phantom61) - resin MK82 bombs and TERs (donated by Gene K) The biggest task of the thing, though, was to try and use Gene's method for the seamless intakes (later for that, but in my WIP thread there's a very detailed SBS) Enough blah-blah, here are the pics (I'll break them down in two posts, since they're many) There was some scratch building involved too, such as the boarding ladder you can see in the above pic Tail area detail, showing the Monogram tail hook Some details added inside the canopies: canopy breaker tools, magnetic variations placards And here is a shot of the seamless intake: Some interior details An in progress shot of the cockpit Weathering details on the ailerons/wing area The AAR door was rescribed, as it's located differently on the J versions Wingtip lights: Stabilator weathering Airscoop detail: the kit ones were carved out, to give a more three-dimensional look. AoA probe is scrtach-built, too, using a brass rod Exhaust detail, sorry for the pic Next post for more details and the underside.
  4. Hello again everyone! This time I bring you the mighty Skyraider! This is a kit I finished in 2018, and was built with the idea of trying new techniques, tools and paints, to see how far my skills would go. It's the venerable, but still good Monogram kit. This are the things I did during the built: 1.- First time using Acrylics and Lacquer paints (long time enamel painter). 2.- I completely rescribed the kit. 3.- I modified the nose to be able to fit the cowling, engine, and lower chin from a dead Tamiya kit. (Monogram is undersized). 4.- Modify a little bit the front fuselage in order to accept the windscreen and canopy from the same Tamiya kit (looks better than Monogram's canopy and windscreen). 5.- I scratchbuilt the landing year, as they didn't come in the box. 6.- The wing cannons were replaced by modified needles. 7.- Tail antenna same as above. 8.- Added a True Details seat. 9.- Quickboost wing and fuselage pylons. 10.- Fuel tank from the Tamiya kit. 11.- True Details wheels. 12.- First time using oils and watercolor pencils for weathering. Cammo was airbrushed freehand. Also the kit decals were used. And I think that's all! Maybe not perfect, but I like the result. Some in-progress photos: And the finished model: Hope you like it. Tato
  5. Hello, This is my first topic in this forum and I hope you enjoy it! The photos were taken at the closed Air Force Base in Bitburg, Germany. The kit is from Monogramm and all panel lines are engraved my myself. It was quiet a lot work. Please take a look to the avionics bay which is totaly scratched. I used decals from superscale. The wheels are from royal resin and the pitot tube from Quickboost. If you have any questions feel free to ask!
