  1. Hi all, as promised on the WIP thread (see here if you wish to take a look) some RFI pics of my first ever foray into foiling to achieve a bare metal finish. In fact, to the best of my knowledge it's very probably my first attempt at a metal finish of any kind, ever! As far as the kit goes it was a good a fit as any I've built in recent times, and apart from the comedy tram lines in place of panel lines, it's a very nice kit. Not overly burdened with detail to be fair, but for that reason it was the ideal kit to learn about what can be achieved by foiling. A few areas where the cut was too close to the edge meant that some touching-in was necessary with some Tamiya flat aluminium paint, but other than that I was quite pleased with how it turned out. I suspect the decals haven't stuck to the metal very well, though - I guess a brief waft with some thinned Klear or similar would probably protect them without compromising the metal sheen too much. All in all, I enjoyed the learning process of foiling very much, and I'm confident that I shall be entertaining another similar subject in due course! Anyway, to the pics - hope you enjoy them! Comments and criticisms, as ever, most welcome.
  2. I wasn't intending to do a WIP on this fairly quick build. But there's a couple of processes I want to try out (for the first time), and I thought I would document it, success or not. Here's the kit... And pretty plain and simple it is, too. I suspect the mould is fairly old although the panel lines are engraved. It was originally a military version I think, and the cabin seats are the lengthways benches that paratroopers would sit on. I have no interest in unseen internal details anyway. What you do get in the Box is THIS... THAT'S RIGHT! 6 civilian livery options. Swissair, Air France, Lufthansa, Classic Air, Alitalia, KLM Now, I'm new to this Civilian airline business, but it is growing on me for sure. Because I do love a good natural metal finish on an airframe, and I do it with sticky back aluminium foil. So the plan is this.... Gloss white rattle can on top of the fuselage, buffed up Ali tape on the rest, and get some practice in with those long decorative stripes along the window line. I'm fancying the Air France option for now - love the overall appearance and that fabulous winged seahorse logo, although I have to say the Lufthansa option comes a very close second. I ought to point out that the KLM option has gone already. I was well along building a Beech Model 18 Expeditor, the military version C45 with either USAF or Royal Navy décor, when I got the DC3 home I should say the Beech is in 1/48 scale, and the overall size is quite similar to the DC3 in 1/72. So I came up with "De Vliegende Hollander" KLM option. And a great deal of enjoyment was had doing it! I'll post this, and gradually get up to date with the build so far.👍
  3. I got around to building this blast from the past.... Some serious issues with the kit. Having done the revell kit, and the Kittyhawk single seater in 1/48, the inaccurate and inadequate parts were obvious. I tried to address some of them, and with a decent clear stand supplied in the box, I decided to go for wheels up. I managed to get 6 pictures outdoors before a random gust tipped her over on the pilot tube! I'll stretch another one (No idea where the piece went..... parallel universe, maybe?) But I've got a big question, I'll ask after the pictures...... The thing is, about the photo recon. attachment up front. It came as an option in the kit for a USAF camo RF101B. My sparse info suggests that the Canadian planes went back to US for updates and conversion. So, the USAF got some, at least for the national guard, BUT.... Did any go back to Canada, and if so, did they get painted? Or fly for a while in nmf? I have the replacement panel, and I'm considering retro fitting the original nose for a CF101B, but no ordnance, the underside between the strakes is completely blank. Any feedback, comments, historical information and suggestions would be most welcome. It's not a great build, but it is mine and I ought to give it a decent go!
  4. This is it, the big push! I had to put this build on hold last spring, and got sidetracked by other builds, including another Voodoo in 1/72 , the revell kit - 1991it says on the instruction sheet. So, got the little one finished finally and put up a RFI thread to celebrate, and now going to crack on with this labour of love, hell or high water, etc... This is the state of play as I lift the lid A lot of the foil work has been done on the main airframe parts. A few areas need looking at again, and a couple of snags in assembly need sorting , but I'm not going to get bogged down in obsessive detail anxiety ( a recently discovered medical condition, call it ODA for short)! 😉 Some debate about metal finish v light grey paint finish, and how it applies with USAF and Canadian planes. I'm no expert, but it's clear that Kittyhawk are saying nmf for this USAF single seater ( and I would have done it anyway, cos I like the process and the look!)
  5. Just finished off this little gem Can't find a bad word to say about it - a joy to build. The tyres have flat spots on them AND rectangular axles and holes to align the flats with the ground surface! And it works! COOL... I rearranged the prop fitting so I could foil the joined fuselage without the prop in the way. The prop fitting worked a treat - couldn't resist giving it a blow for a photo Been finding out about Col.Robin Olds . Some models of of his Lockheed Lightning"ScatII , Scat III" Well, it turns out Scat IV was a 51-D
