  1. After the OK from @Enzo the Magnificent to include further stages of my Never Ending Diorama in KUTA I thought I would start with a shelf of shame item. These should be part of a street scene in the aftermath of an air raid. The two buildings were given to me and still show some of the original painting. Apart from removing the garage on the right hand building and demolishing part of the other one - little work has been carried out.
  2. Hi all, One of two projects for this GB that I actually started a week or two ago - I've seen someone else do the same sort of thing with a 9F on the exhibition circuit, so I can't claim that it's an original subject, but it should be an interesting exercise for me. For our more remotely located members who may not know the story, one Dai Woodham owned a scrapyard at Barry Island in Wales. When BR finally stopped steam operations in 1968, the locomotives were sold off for scrap, Mr Woodham bought a goodly number to break up, but for some reason, didn't break the engines up straight away. This fleet of engines now form a large proportion of the available steam locomotives on preserved and heritage lines up and down the country. Some of them were in a right old state by the time they'd been rescued though, and it is to the credit of all those enthusiasts who have spent time and money in their restoration and upkeep. So, the model will represent a 9F, quietly dissolving in a siding somewhere, awaiting salvation, or further cannibalisation to keep one of its sisters going. I'm using the Kitmaster/Airfix/Dapol kit and will be hacking bits off it, painting and then weathering/rusting. Don't know why, but I can't find the picture of the opened bag, so here's one of the chassis partially completed. Sinkmarks on the wheel centres have been filled. Footplate/bottom of boiler have had chunks removed. Top half of boiler has had moulded on handrails and various steam pipes removed - Brass handrails will be installed as the project progresses. Will hopefully catch up tomorrow. IanJ
  3. I just had to share my latest pride and joy with you. This is the new Maunsell D1 Class from Dapol in association with Rails of Sheffield. Yes, that's an RTR loco with no extra detailing. That's exactly how it comes out of the box!!! It even has internal valve gear - albeit non-functional. Finally, a realistic coupling distance between the loco and tender. This will still happily cope with second radius curves. Let's have a look at the cab interior. 4-4-0 locos are great but they can have issues when run as there are only four wheels with pickups on the loco. This model has pickups on the tender wheels as well. Usually that means a cable and connector to run between them but not in this case. You can see the connector at the bottom of the picture. The tender is a simple push fit to the loco. The tender has a removeable coal load. Lovely Westinghouse pump on the other side. I love this model!
  4. Hi, Transport guys. 👍I've been kind of hanging around this interesting GB and watching the action, and I've got a little kit that has been languishing in a box for some considerable time. You are the motivation I need to have another go. So may I join in?? It's this.... Reissued by Dapol from the ancient Airfix trackside range It's the Scammel Scarab 3-wheeler sometimes referred to as the Mechanical Horse. The kit is barely started with the sides of the cab together, and 1 barrel assembled. Probably won't be used. But I've just had a go at making a windscreen for the cab and I think I've nearly pulled it off 😎 I got no business really starting another GB wip but hey, life's too short to be building in a linear progression. And I don't think you've got one of these on the group list yet. You up for one?? 😀
  5. This will be my third build in this GB. The Higgins boat is nearly finished and I have committed to building a dockside for it (thread yet to be started) but any dock needs a crane so enter: the 50 year + old Airfix model now made by Dapol For an old mould, and "recycled plastic" the amount of flash is minimal, ejector pin marks are common, most are hidden but these need addressing, another major issue is the ladder which I am removing and replacing but progress is progressing fast
  6. Joining with this Dapol kit, Bought at Cheltenham Model Centre for £13.05, on 02 Dec 2020 - about the last time they were open. Parts, I'm quite impressed. I built a Dapol Battle of Britain in 2017, and the parts were quite warped. These are much more straight. And instructions, there's only one option for this build.
  7. Designed by Robert Riddles, these locomotives saw service from 1954 to 1968. The final one built (Evening Star) was the last steam locomotive built by British Rail.
  8. It is a number years since anyone has posted this venerable model onto BM, so I thought I would give it a go. Venerable indeed as shown by the copyright date Now on its third manufacturer this sprue shot shows a significant amount of flash, but luckily none of it is near delicate parts. I have purchased Dapol kits with significant moulding errors, this one seems OK. Dapol's warranty makes interesting reading. Especially as it would cost me most in transport costs & parking, to get to my LMS to return it than the kit cost. Will make an interesting build as Yellow and White are my two least favourite colours to brush paint. Airfix used to mould it in yellow plastic which actually was not much help if you primed the kit prior to painting. On with the build...
  9. BR Standard Class 9F 92220 Evening Star Dapol Kitmaster OO I have recently completed this for the Made in Britain II Group Build and thought that I would share my efforts here. I used the Dapol Kitmaster Evening Star kit and removed the moulded handrails before replacing them with Alan Gibson parts, I also replaced the simpler sections of pipework with Albion Alloys micro-tubing. The decals are from Fox Decals and nameplates are Modelmaster UK etch. I brush painted the green with Phoenix Precision BR Loco Green (Post '54). The couplings are from Smiths and other additional parts are GEM white metal. I then decided to have a look for some crew figures and came across a company called Modelu based in Wales, and they offer 3D printed crew figures in several scales. In the past I have bought crew and had difficulty getting them to fit, but these were perfect and once painted up they add that bit of life to the footplate. Future plans include the making of a small diorama with the loco running light, so at some point in the future you will probably see it making an appearance there too. by John Leigh, on Flickr by John Leigh, on Flickr by John Leigh, on Flickr by John Leigh, on Flickr by John Leigh, on Flickr
  10. Following a suggestion by @Mjwomack I have decided to have a go at a third build. If things go according to plan then I am hoping that I can complete them all. Kit sprue shots are below, lots of flash on the detail parts, so there will be plenty of cleaning up to do for a start. Wish me luck.
  11. Having made the assumption that the work I have carried out so far falls within the 25% rule I am going to include this as my second build. As can be seen in the photos, the only items that have been glued are the boiler and the lower frame halves, so I think that this is a fair assumption when considering the improvements (such as replacement of the handrails) I would like to make, I hope that this is OK. However, if there are any objections I would like to continue with the build but will not include final photos in the gallery. Evening Star was built at the Swindon Works in 1960 and, as well as being 999th standard class, was the last steam locomotive built by BR (though not numerically). She was the only class 9F to be named following a competition run by BR Western Region staff magazine, though other preserved 9F's have received names since. After five years service over the Western Region and Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway, 92220 was withdrawn and placed in storage. In 1966 the locomotive was towed to Crewe for overhaul and restoration and is part of the NRM's National Collection. More information can be found here Work carried out so far.
  12. Here is my build of the Dapol OO/HO Stephenson's Rocket (C046) I built the Airfix version in the Seventies and rather than build the one I have in my stash, I bought a Dapol version for a "just for fun" build. As turned out, it was fun! Dave
  13. Hi all! Finished my first ever loco kit recently! Please check out the link below and let me know what you think of the finished model (and also the quality/edit of the video) - constructive criticism extremely welcome! (it's the only way we get better right?) Not 100% happy that the wheels don't turn too freely, but hopefully I'll fix that on the next kit I build. Pretty content with the overall finish though. Thanks for reading guys!
  14. Hi All, Second entry in this GB. Popped in to Trains4U in P'boro (Work just up the road) for various tools and consumables for the A4 and this fell in the basket as well. Complete polar opposite of the A4 - Stephenson's Rocket was a ground breaking development in the very beginning of steam locomotive engineering. Introducing boiler tubes, the blastpipe and cylinders coupled directly to the driving wheels. It's the Dapol (Ex Airfix/Kitmaster) Rocket which I built at least 4 decades ago - Don't expect this one to move under its own steam though (Sorry) This is one that can be built at lunchtime at my desk - Something I wouldn't entertain doing with a whitemetal kit, elf and safety and all that....
