  1. DML Conqueror Mk2

    The autumn is upon us, Nights are drawing in, the garden needs tidying before winter, there are a score of household seasonal maintenance jobs that need doing before the weather breaks, but why waste ideal modeling weather! So what better to accompany those long dismal dark evenings staring at "the Leg Iron" over a plate of Findus crispy pancakes and pot noodle, than a build that`ll frustrate the bejesus out of you! I`m Granto, you may remember me from previous threads such as DML Saladin ++ and "first build in donkeys years", well don't let that put you off, here`s my remedy to Seasonal affected disorder, DML`s Conqueror Mk 2! (cue fanfare) No, trust me, I`m a doctor! So here it is.................I couldn't wait to get my hands on this when I first heard about it, and I spent hours trawling the interweb looking for news, and then came the reviews. I couldn't believe they had got it so wrong, but a part of me still wanted to believe, so I kept the faith, and Brothers and Sisters the good Lord of plastic spoke unto to me in a dream! And he said that my faith would show me the way and that I should show that way unto you, my good Brothers and Sisters, so here tiz`! So, we've all read the reviews about Dragon and their black label series, being a sceptic and believing everyone is selling something or can be bought I parted with my spondulicks for the kit as soon as it became available, I compared my kit with various "experts" opinion and I thought there was a build here, just as I believe there is a worthwhile build in their M103! ( yes, it`s a big job but are you a modeler or an assembler?) Dimensionally the kit is good apart from the main armament, there are a few items out of position by a couple of MM here and there, but the basics are there and as I go through the build I will show how I overcame those that are an issue, there was one review though that really got my back up, the reviewer categorically stated that one major flaw "couldn't be corrected without major surgery", well I got you there big man, because for once I am blessed with knowledge denied to lesser mortals! At that point I knew I could I could do a proper correction to this error and build a decent representation of a Conqueror Mk2! Conqueror has always been one of my favorite tanks, One sat as the gate guardian at the Junior Leaders Regiment at Stanley barracks, Bovington when I was there, I climbed all over and inside of it, and she`s still there to this day, a behemoth of the cold war battlefield. Conqueror was developed, as was the M103, to kill soviet tanks at extreme range with her 120mm gun whilst sitting one bound behind the more numerous Centurions with their 20 pounder guns. Conqueror was not designed to accompany the Cent`s and therefore was not given the same kit or design features, she didnt have a boat shaped hull to deflect mine explosions because she wasn't supposed to encounter mines by virtue of the fact her job was overwatch not patrolling, her gun kit didnt work until she went over 1.5 mph, Centurion`s worked all the time whatever, despite being over twenty tons heavier she had the same meteor engine (albeit fuel injected) and a similar merit-brown crash gearbox. As far as the Army were concerned she was nothing more than a glorified mobile pillbox! There were 20 Mk1 vehicles built which were used for troop trials, these took place while the construction of the MK2`s were under way and the two marks differed in some respects, there were a host of internal changes but the most visible difference is to the front of the hull, and this is what wound me up in the review! Conqueror`s hull was constructed from armour plate, the thickest being the upper and lower glacis which was 5 inches thick and angled at 60 degrees. Behind this formidable armour sat the driver and a whole heap of ready rounds, however the design committee were not satisfied that the weld seam between the upper glacis and the roof plate was able to withstand an impact from an explosive or AT round, they also felt that the join to the roof plate was weakened further by it`s proximity to the three episcopes provided for the driver. Rather than a redesign, the most economical and practical solution was to reinforce the the join by an applique patch that was chamfered to the rear to resemble a very thin wedge and lapped at the front to engage with the top of the glacis plate in addition two of the episcopes were deleted as it was felt that the vehicle, being one bound behind, would not necessarily be driven closed down for long periods. these modifications were incorporated into the vehicle during construction of the hull giving the now characteristic crease across the hull roof, there was no internal difference due to this modification. This as you will see is probably the easiest fix in the history of modeling! An applique patch! Hardly major surgery is it? Anyway, enough of my ranting, in accordance with modeling law here are the guts! One sheet of manufacturers opinions, double sided! Hull top and bottom, Nice detail, big Dragon sprue gates! Turret and mantlet sleeve. DS tracks! Optics and headlight lenses. As is usual with Dragon, you get sprue duplication. There is some very nice detail on here, all apart from the big drainpipe on the left! Hideous .30cal! Again, it`s not all bad news! Plastic everywhere! Here`s the Conky next to Zero Echo! Hehehehehehe She`s a big old girl! Oh, I almost forgot the drainpipe.................................................... OMG! S`lush! But wont I need to solder the bits? No you Donkey! It all screws together! Sweeeeeet! Sooo Sweeeeet! So there you have it Brothers and Sisters, Conqueror coming! Shed first thing in the morning! Ta for lookin` no "G" Granto
  2. DML Saladin ++

    I started this ages ago and the WIP was progressing nicely until the Photobucket asteroid destroyed the images on my WIP dinosaur! However, here is a brief recap! Here are the guts laid out for inspection as per modeling law! I think it`s a reasonable kit! However, an evening of cider kebab and internet shopping resulted in these goodies! The DEF model weighted wheels really are a work of art! Assembly proceeded quickly and was trouble free in the main. The suspension was particularly busy however, if I remember correctly there are almost 50 parts here which you will never see! The only major correction was the suspension geometry, the kit sits too low, since there was an amount of articulation in the suspension components it was simple to make the suspension up on a jig the gave the correct ride height and leave it to go firm! Resulting in this! The next part of the correction was to force the axles lower than the kit would like, so a shim was glues into the hubs, once dry the shim was fettled until the axles sat at the correct angle Kind of like this! The ends of the axles had to be trimmed down by 3 mm to fit the replacement wheels but the result was this.......... Lovely........I had to go and have a lie down! I wanted to make a MK 1 vehicle which meant removing the indicators and their attendant wiring, but that was relatively quick and pain free. One of the other issues with the kit was the absence of hatch rims, bizarrely these were also missing on the Mr Modellbau resin hatches, so these were duly fabricated resulting in the hatches not closing! This is not an issue since I intended to build it all opened up So here is the turret with replacement resin bits, another omission is the commanders .30 cal MG and mounting, thoughtfully everything is provided by our friendly German aftermarket chums. The smoke grenade dischargers were modified with a bit of etch fret and wired up in the now familiar fashion! (stripped telephone cable!) So here it all is pre primer, resin, metal, scratch..................... And early on in the paint process........................ Much later in the process.................. Even further on............... Just sitting on its wheels..........no glue yet Weathering and washes under way....................The yellow and red flash indicates RAC Centre regiment the Rose indicates up north! So a Catterick based vehicle................I got well and truly bogged up on the area there.......so The suspension got a good hammering with dirt..........oh , you cant see it! That's a bit more like it! Proper minging! The only difference between these two fots is the angle! This is Flory wash, and by the looks of it there's still a lot to come off! Hey, After several years of AFV and plane modelling I feel ready for an excursion in the maritime world I was eyeing some of the post war aircraft carriers but I think I should start smaller with a destroyer, for instance. The only problem I have is choosing the "right" beginner kit from the plethora of available options. Here are a few corner stones I have in mind for the selection: - price not over 50 GBP / 50 Euro - scale should be 1/350 - cold war or modern era subject - PE parts are OK; even resin/metal add-ons can be considered - nation is not so important - ideally, an off-mainstream, exotic subject Any suggestion is most welcome! Thank you!

  5. Here's my build of the Skybirds '86 kit, with the outer drop tanks substituted by AGM-12D Bullpup AGMs, converted from the items in the Hasegawa weapons set. Markings for 803 NAS on the Ark during 1965.

Hi, First Work-In-Progress build here so bear with me if the quality is poor Got this Revell 1:72 MiG-21 F-13 "Fishbed C" for just £2.00 at the Air Tattoo 2017 because apparently, they weren't selling well for the £8.00 asking price . Either way, it was a bargain so I bought it - and seeing as I have all the paints needed I can start work straight away. Box The three sprues (plus a clear sprue) were very nice (sadly I have no images of them before I got at them with my blades) in Revell's metallic-silver plastic. There was no flash apart from a large chunk on the exhaust that I easily removed with a cutting knife. The clear parts seem high quality - with the canopy being in two halves so hopefully I can model this with the canopy open. Sadly there is no pilot - as with all other Revell kits - so I'll need to try and do a decent job with the cockpit. There is a very small decal sheet lacking in detail from what I usually expect from Revell - however it's a 1:72 model so I guess it's understandable. There are options to depict one from the "Air-Defence-Garde-Regiment", USSR 1961, or one from East Germany (GDR), 1963. I will be modelling the USSR one I will hopefully model with the gear down also. So I hope you enjoy this build I guess... again apologies as this is my first time documenting a build - any suggestions for improvements would be greatly appreciated! Cheers, Adam

This Vulcan was one of only two Vulcans to be given a dark sea grey cammo upper surface with a white belly. I think the light an dark contrast well in terms of aesthetics so I thought, why not... I finished this Vulcan over a year ago and the gloss finish was looking a little flat, so... Glossy Vulcan! Three fresh coats to (hopefully) protect the decals (those of you who have seen the experiment with XM655 will know the decals didn't fare well). Back to this Vulcan - Compared to XM655 featured in Part 1 this Vulcan is considerably better made. Unlike XM655 this Vulcan had all of its surfaces sanded. I've re-scribed of all the panel lines which meant sanding the old ones away and I thought while I was at it I would do all of the surfaces to give a better key for the paint to adhere. I even went to the trouble of separating the outer elevons (but at the time I didn't dare do the inner elevons). The fuselage windows were also drilled and covered with some clear plastic I found. This Vulcan also had a fair bit of filler applied for that overall smoother look, it was by far my most advanced effort to that date. However after a mainly successful build it all went wrong with the paint! I was fairly happy with the camouflage, a little unbalanced but not too badly. It was the belly that was the source of disappointment. It wasn't sprayed, but brushed and I don't know if it's just the Humbrol white that was the issue but I had to put six or seven coats, so when it came time to match up the upper and lower surfaces the thickness of the paint was somewhat uneven. The white on the belly also comes up too high on the fuselage and the match up on the leading edges around the intakes isn't right. Finally when it came time to paint the fuselage Radome black, I also brought that up too high, so all in all a bad paint job. Fortunately I have since learned from my mistakes... So, same table/runway, same garden, same materials but a more advanced build. The differences? Well, XM655 was a matt finish all over and this one is (mostly) gloss. The radome and tail cap are finished in satin and the jetpipe caps and wheels are finished in matt. This one also has Humbrol Gloss-Cote whereas XM655 had Matt Cote as the top layers and the brown Humbrol stuff as the first coats and underneath the decals. This one has been given about five days in a warm airing cupboard, so hopefully the varnish will be fairly dry and will hold for longer. Oh, and this one is going out in winter, where XM655 went out in spring... As before she is screwed to the table, but I have given more lift on nose this time.. I'm not entirely sure why I did that, I may drop it more level later on.. After quite a nice day, it rained all over me whilst setting this up, which was fun... On the plus side it did give the pictures a nice effect. Here is how she looks on 22nd November 2015.. If you think the front U/C looks a little skew-wiff, it's because it is... I knocked it off during setup and it didn't glue back together properly, mainly because I couldn't be bothered to un-mount the Vulcan to glue it back on, so it will probably fall off... I hope that the gloss varnish will help to stop the paint peeling as happened on XM655. After only a few months the decals started to come off, I'm hoping XM600's will hold for longer... A good sign was when I varnished XM655 just before she went out I lost a few minor ones but on XM600 no decals came away at all. So, let the weathering commence! Thanks for looking and stay tuned.
  8. Better late than never! NATO forces are being bolstered by forward deployed recon birds in W. Germany, based out of Bremgarten Air Base near Freiburg. Due to the fairly limited time, this will be a largely OoB build. At this time I will likely be building RF-4E 35+23.
  9. MA-1A USAF Start Cart 1:48 CMK via Special Hobby This little cart provides the initial blast of air that begins the spooling up process of a Cold War jet engine. The air from the small turbine inside the cart is ducted through the flexible hose attached and into the aircraft, like blowing a giant windmill! Sat on its four wheels it can be hand-wrangled or towed by a tractor to wherever it is needed, and has been seen in various shades such as green, yellow and white. When not in use the hose is usually draped around the top of the cart, and while in use, the two panels on the top are set to their raised positions. The Kit This is a new resin kit from Special Hobby's resin arm, and arrives in a small yellow box, which is a description that you could also use for the cart itself. Inside are a bag of smaller resin parts, the main body of the cart, a ziplok bag containing decals and a Photo-Etch (PE) brass sheet, and of course a folded A4 sheet of instructions in colour. As you would imagine, it is a simple build, with the main body consisting of one large lump, which just needs its underside trimming flat. The wheels are attached to stub axles and locate in depressions in the base, the towing frame fits under the front, and the arm is then fitted either flat, or raised up out of the way. The opening hatches on the top are folded up to shape, and fixed to the deck as per the diagrams, while the instrument panel is recessed into the rear face, and has a double-sided PE cover that hinges down in use. The hose is supplied in two pieces of resin, which you will need to heat and shape to suit your needs, which is best done with some water out of a recently boiled kettle. Watch your fingers, and remember to pin or tape the parts to shape while they cool off, using cold water to speed the process. As usual with resin, take the precaution of wearing a mask when cutting or sanding resin, as the tiny particles are harmful to your health if breathed in. Washing the parts in warm water will also improve the adhesion of paint, as there may still be some moulding release agent on the parts when you receive them. Markings A small sheet of decals are included for the various stencils and corner markers, and the cart is shown painted yellow, although the other colour options could equally be built by checking the few references out there. Decals for the instrument panel are clear, registration, colour density and sharpness are good, with a nice thin carrier film. Conclusion With plenty of scope for beating up the paint-job, this should be a quick and satisfying project that adds both scale and a more candid nature to any Cold War jet model display. An easy build should make it quite appealing to even the resin novice. Very highly recommended. Review sample courtesy of

  11. This isn't the best photo I've taken, but here it is anyway. The aircraft depicted is XH838, a MK7 in the colours of 33 Squadron RAF. The kit is the Airfix 1/48 and the AllyCat conversion. My dad was a Junior Technician, (instruments) on the flight line and worked on this very aircraft, which was my motivation for doing this particular aircraft. I do need to replace a couple of vortex generators on the starboard wing though!
  12. Hello all, As promised here are final build pictures of my 1:72 scale B-45A Tornado from the Mach2 kit, with a few mods. It is only a little unusual in that it depicts a B-45A from the Air Test Center in cold-weather markings, probably tat Ladd AFB, Alaska, circa 1948-1952. Also unusual is the fact that the arctic markings are not seen on the wingtips. I cannot recall another model of this aircraft depicting the boarding ladders. Built thread is here: Without further ado, the photos: Oops -- windshield washer needs a little bending! I'm sort of proud of that rear boarding ladder! And that's all f-f-olks! Once again was stuck trying to figure out how to show use on a newer, pretty-well maintained aircraft -- while in Alaska. She's not pristine, but not really dirty either. This is my best guess...     Hi, this is the first time I have put the start of one of my builds on this forum, although I have put a number of entries on the ready for inspection forum. My most recent posts and builds have been of 1/48 scale, this one is a return to my roots with a 1/72 scale kit. The chosen kit is Special Hobby's Hawker Tempest MkII or F2 in post war parlance , which will be either an aluminium or camouflaged painted aircraft of 33 Squadron RAF whilst based at RAF Kuala Lumpur around the 1949 - 1951 timeframe. I am trying to model all the types of aircraft operated by 33 Squadron, initially post War types in 1/72 scale. I will be building the kit OOB, but using Model Alliance decal sheet MAS-729021. The kit is injection moulded but has resin components, primarily the wheel bays, a film slide instrument panel and a etched panel to go over the film slide. Any comments or advice would be welcome.   17. Valiant B(PR)K1 WZ397

    Here Goes. I know out there will be someone with the appropriate knowledge in respect of the Valiant B(PR)K1. I am aiming to do WZ397 as depicted in the following picture (taken in September 1964) which clearly shows a side oblique camera. My question is have Airfix missed this out of their additional kit? In the kit there are 9 appertures that are offset from the centre line and a further on on the centre line at the rear of the bomb bay - but nothing on the side. This leads on to the next question does anyone know the dimensions of the port and would the cameras and optically flat windows no have a sliding cover, so no debris interfered with the photography?

    Nearly finished this one. Lots of Eduard etched stuff in this one, a Brassin Vulcan cannon muzzle, and replacement fan blades. The Eduard undercarriage was especially fiddly, but worthwhile.

    So after following the '80s NATO / Warsaw Pact group build thread, I was made aware of Tom Clancy's novel. Had not heard of it before, but it certainly piqued my interest. Well, now I've finally done it... Tracked down a 1st printing of the book yesterday for a reasonable price and purchased it. Looking forward to it's arrival...then to see what all the hype is about. Haha. So yeah.....it's all your fault BM!
  20. It has been in the works long enough. Resin, vacu canopy and decals from Miniwing. Cannon fairings courtesy of Master. Brass by Shelf Oddity, which means it is the test article for the brass parts - an awkward way to promote our product and equally awkward way to excuse imperfections. First two photos with my trusty companion, who did the part chopping: and lent a helping brush: Now, the Attacker himself: "We there yet?" For anyone still awake - few WIP photos, focusing on metal bits, because resin parts came together without any fuss: The one showing dorsal bleed doors and boundary layer vents: The one showing boundary layer ramp inside intake (that no one will ever notice): The one showing ventral boundary layer vents along gear struts locks in u/c bays. And the one showing tremendous effort on my part - making a cut through the middle of the tail wheel to make it a twin tail wheel.
  21. Hi everyone! I decided to start something new on the side and get off the F-16 I am building for a while because I am getting a bit burnt out with it to be honest. I decided to start something fresher and I thought simpler.... naive I am!! So I decided to start with the Hasegawa Mig-27 Flogger D in the 1/72: This particular release is from 2003 although I am suspecting it comes from an old old kit as a quick search in Scalemates suggests. Also the combination of raised and depressed panel lines suggests. Furthermore there some significant flash in the kit pointing to a worn out mold. So these are the sprues out of the box: Plus a clear sprue with the 2 piece canopy, which can be mounted either close or open and a couple of clear part for signaling lights on the side of the main fuselage. Completely wrong shape, at least for the Flogger D model, which should be as follow: (http://scalemodels.ru/modules/photo/viewcat.php?id=24979&cid=567&min=60&orderby=dateA&show=12) Photo credit True that there are differences between the mig-27 models: But all those nice targeting systems on the nose (Kaira-1 system) completely non existing on the Hasegawa kit! So I set myself to fix this offend! Original nose: A bit of standard Milliput and water to shape the Kaira-1 system main structure: Sanding and reshapping will follow to lower the profile of the structure, also painted the sockets black and cut open the frontal element of the Kaira-1 using a photo-etched mini saw: Now time for the optics! Clear sprue which has been reshaped thinner and polished: Cut the tip for the frontal element of the lens (see reference picture above): A smear of CA and it is fixed! Now the second optical element at the front: This is just a clear styrene sheet cut and glued into place # Next will be covering all elements with the armoured glass windows which will be more clear styrene sheet and nose it is ready to go! I have also been working on the frontal wheel bay which again kit version is FAAAAAAAAAAAAR from reality! I will prepare another post just focusing on that one After that comes the cockpit which in the kit is mysteriously missing! As always comments / suggestions are more than welcome! I've always rather liked the Gulf War Tornado ZA465- otherwise known as Foxy Killer and so it would have been absurd if I was to pass up the opportunity to model this fabulous example of British aviation. Kit: Revell 1:72 Tornado Gr.1 (From my LMS- Mike's Models) Extras: Print Scale- Tornado Gr.1 Gulf War nose art (From Hannants) -Scratchbuilt RBF tags made from paper and FOD covers made from tissue paper. Paints Used: Vallejo: Black, White, Medium Olive, Barley Grey, Red. The "Desert Pink" colour was created from a variety of Vallejo paints mixed together. This build was one that I had wanted to do for quite a while, so my LMS had one in stock the other day so I thought it would be silly not to get it This bulid also marks the end of my AS exams (culminating with Chemistry on Friday) and "liberation" from schoolwork for at least two or three months...... Kit used: Airfix 1:72 Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR3 Paints used: Vallejo "Model Air"- Barley Grey, Medium Olive, Fire Red, Black and "Metal Color" Duraluminium. The nozzles, heat-shield and gear legs were painted with Alclad Aluminium. Vallejo "Model Wash" Dark Grey was used as a general wash and also sprayed in my first attempt at post-shading. Decals: The kit decals were perfect, with no splitting at all and no excess decal film being visible once applied. Edit: Thanks to Airfix for supplying me with a missing half of a cannon-pod!   25. Dear all, I'd meant to post this link some time ago to the website for Puddletown bookshop in Dorset. There's a great stock of books on subjects of interest to Britmodellers, such as aviation, military history and so forth. A large number of the books are contemporary with their subjects and go back to the start of the 20th century.
