<Edit: Mods, this could have gone in WWII, Cold War or even Rumourmonger'. I put it here. Please move if required.>
Chaps & chapesses,
I was on the Airfix website last night and put in a customer suggestion that Airfix consider producing a 1/72 DH Hornet kit. I recognise this is a long shot, but I thought I'd poll the wisdom of the Britmodeller crowd as to the practicalities of this suggestion.
Although I would love Airfix to produce this kit, I don't think it's a particularly strong contender for the following reasons:
1) No complete - or even substantially complete - airframe to 'LIDAR',
2) Subject not a famous - or particularly well used - type,
3) Crowded release schedule with potentially more 'deserving' types of higher priority (Mossie with twin-stage engines, anyone?)
However, I think the pros are:
1) There's no mainstream kit of the subject in the scale - limited run manufacturers' efforts are either oop, have significant shape errors, or both,
2) Airfix is not afraid to kit 'unusual' or lesser used British types (eg Swift, Whitley, etc.) as 'prestige' projects,
3) David Collins' et al DH Hornet Project have, it appears, substantial data on the type which could be used to generate a 3D CAD and may (not having spoken to David, I can't speak for him) be willing to support Airfix with information on such a venture,
4) It's a fricking gorgeous aircraft!
On balance, I don't expect to see a Hornet (of whatever scale, although I'm biased to 1/72nd) from Airfix anytime soon. But, could it be a player at all? Let me know your views, and also whether if they did produce an accurate state of the art kit for eg Beaufighter price, you would buy one. Ta.
regards,
Martin
