At the Shuttleworth display yesterday I was fortunate enough to get into conversation with a former RAF Fitter, Airframe. He told me that part of his wartime service had been at an MU on the Clyde that dealt almost entirely with Catalans. He remarked that they had had quite a few problems with the PBY-5A amphibian version, particularly in obtaining spares for the undercarriage retraction gear. The situation became so bad that they had a number of aircraft languishing waiting for parts, but otherwise fit for service, so one of the engineers came up with a scheme to remove the undercarriage, plate over the wells, redistribute some of the internal equipment to keep the cg within limits and get them back into service. Apparently this work was carried out on a number of airframes. I'd never heard of this before and I'm wondering if any other members have.i
