  1. Here I am again with my fourth completed build of the year. Not bad for an average of one a month considering that i've struggled to find the time for modelling & taking pics. Here's my flying swing wing devil, Chort or Čert in Czech culture according to wikipedia 😉 This is the RV 1/72 MiG-23 MF boxing. I had to hand cut a mask for the light grey nose flames as there were no decals for them. The red "50" & Hellfighter were quite transparent so couldn't really do anything to correct that. Aftermarket were a Karaya replacement resin & etch exhaust nozzle. I found it difficult to shape the nozzle in its depressed state. tried to squash it a little but would easily have damaged it if I put any force on it. Would definitely recommend getting the Clear Prop resin exhaust if building this RV kit again. A Master brass nose pitot was used & I also had to scratch build the auxiliary pitot tubes as they weren't available in the kit. They're quite prominent on most MiG jets. The ejection seat was a resin example from Res-Im Ladder & choks were from LP Models. Paint's used were either Vallejo or Ammo Mig. The grey was light ghost grey & all the washes were the enamel type from Ammo Mig. Here's my rather short W.I.P..... Overall the RV kit is pretty good, has nice surface detail, but the bad points for me were the very basic ejection seat & the exhaust & lack of prominent pitot's. RV 1/72 MiG-23 MF 3646 Ceske Budejovice AFB 1994 Thanks for looking! Martin
  2. Hi everyone, I am extremely pleased to get my latest build rolled out today. As the WIP timeline will attest, I have been at this one for a long time due to a number of factors, and more recently due to a lack of enthusiasm. I guess that’s how it goes sometimes. Having said that, I remain very pleased that I started her and I am even more pleased with the result. She isn’t perfect but hey ho, she needs to get out and feel the air! As you will know from the WIP (below), she is a MiG-23MF Flogger-B as operated by the Indian Air Force. These aircraft, in their single-seat form and with two-seat support, were operated by 223rd “Tridents” and 224 squadrons “Warlord” and were initially based at Adampur AFS. They entered service in 1983 and were finally retired in 2007, with the unit later taking on the Jaguar. Operationally they were used in at least two conflict operations over Kashmir – Operations Megdoot and Safed Sagar. My depiction shows ‘SK427’ in her early days of service as seen in the photo below which was taken while visiting Pune AFS in 1998. Later the colour schemes changed – through a multi-shaded/colour camouflage to the final overall grey that is prevalent within the IAF currently. These aircraft became grubby throughout their career in the Indian Air Force and so I have taken the liberty of adding a bit more grime! The target of my project. Credit: Phil Camp/Simon Watson SK427 later in her career. Public Domain Grubby, mucky girls going out on the town ;). Credit: Simon Watson/Public Domain After some false starts and re-starts she is built from a combination of the KP and RV kits. I got the latter one cheaply as a “JASDF” marking kit. It is a challenging kit – the plastic is the same for both kits – due to the modular way it has been moulded. Even so, with care and determination, together with some improvements here and there, she builds quite well. The RV kit offers PE too. This, though, is a challenge in itself as it primarily covers the multitude of vanes/antennae/blades that are missed in the KP. Having had a few bits depart my tweezers and ping to far flung recesses of my study, I added some but not all. With regards paintwork I elected, rightly or wrongly, to adopt colours that appeared close to the Pune photo above. It has darkened a little after varnishing but I still think it is close to the colours you can see. I used Humbrol Leather for the Brown and a mix of greens from the Humbrol range. The underside is Russian Pale Blue Grey. A point of note – as you can see from the photo – is that the fin flash is supposed to be at an angle! 😊 I had intended to add some R-23 missiles. I got some Reskit examples but after my banana-like fingers knocked a few fins off I abandoned that. I might add them if the Clear Prop accessories box ever gets released. What did I do/use? Well, she is pretty much OOB but I did add the braces inside the intake “vanes”, which I had first built up around the edges to add definition. Otherwise: Kit - Primarily the KP MiG-23MF Flogger-B 1/72 (KPM0050) kit with extra (and some replacement) bits from the RV kit. The latter is better in that it has harder plastic that gives more definition to details. Paints - Mainly Humbrol on this occasion. H62 Leather, a mix of H80 Grass Green and H120 Light Green, with Colourcoats Pale Blue Grey for undersides. Colourcoats Radome Grey was used on the nose and de-electric areas. Various details got Humbrol and Colourcoats paints used. Decals - The main markings were a combination of excellent drawings by Giorgio @Giorgio N, particularly the unit badge, and Mika at Arctic Decals. Mika then printed everything. I used a selection of stencils and warning decals as I considered appropriate. Aftermarket - Aires cockpit set, Master pitot, Res-Kit wheel set. I did also use a belly tank from an Eduard MiG-21 as well as an aux pitot from the same source. Weathering - A mix of Tamiya Weathering Powders over Flory washes (Dark Dirt for the undersides and Mud for the uppers). In addition I used a Prismacolor silver pencil here and there. I hope you like her! Edit: I forgot to say that when I un-masked the canopy today, not only had the vinyl Montex masks stuck to the plastic rigidly but I also had seepage around them where the edges had peeled back slightly :(. I also noticed that while trying to get them off I had scratched the canopy in two places :(. Fortunately I have a spare ;). So, one day soon she will get a new "lid", as my grandson calls them . Note to self - no more Montex masks!
  3. Hi all, After a false start a week or two ago I have re-started this build. My initial attempt was using the more recent KP kit but, being honest, I made a few mistakes and had a thin cement accident that trashed so much detail that I stopped it. So, with renewed vigour I have given her another go. This time I am using the remains of the early KP with some replacement parts from a RV MiG-23MF "What If" kit. I'm no fan of What Ifs so I had no other use for it. To its credit, though, the plastic is more robust but it does suffer from some of the RV extras like PE (my nemesis ). I had already gathered together some aftermarket, some of which went west when I trashed the first attempt. Here is the KP box and the extras: You can see that I have now opted to use a Res-Im cockpit rather than the Pavla, which was more poorly detailed. However, the Pavla was probably more representative of the aircraft. The Res-Im detail, though, is superb, especially on the area forward of the coaming. The aircraft I am planning on representing is "SK427", a MiG-23MF that was operated by 224 squadron of the Indian Air Force. The Indians operated these aircraft from Jamnagar as a stop-gap pending the arrival of the MiG-27 and MiG-29. Two squadrons were operated - 223 and 224. The non-What If RV MiG-23MF kit has this machine as part of its decal offering. However, my research with the help of Giorgio @Giorgio N has shown that in every respect it is inaccurate :(. So, it was off to the PC for me to draw what I need and to ask Mika at Arctic Decals to print them for me. Here is SK427 while at rest at Pune AFS: Credit: Simon Watson I also fancy building this to accompany her: Credit: Simon Watson That will have to wait awhile! I have already started work on her and will post a few images soon. Martin
  4. Not as good as the academy kit but the Hasegawa Mig-23 kit does build fast. That said, I always get thrown off by kits that are a mix of raised and engraved panel lines because it makes it a little more challenging for me to make the paint job more interesting, especially since I was going for a Tipnis Grey finish. This was a straight OOB build. I broke the pitot tube early in the process and when I couldn't get a metallic pin to stick as a replacement, I fashioned a new one from my spares box. - I believe an old matchbox SHAR pitot tube. All colors are Tamiya. I used Sky Grey (XF19) for Tipnis Grey and gave it a black wash before sealing. The decals are mostly from the Hi Decal sheet for the MiG-23BN as I assumed they will be fairly similar. The Serial numbers are Berna Decals. I chose SK434 as it is still around as an attraction at the Indian Air Force Museum in Delhi. I hope you like this build. Comments are always welcome - thx for looking!

  6. Hello, I'd like to show you my still rudimentary effort in building the Italeri (ex ESCI) MiG-23 in 1/48. It has lots of known inaccuracies, I will try to correct some of them.... for my personal motivation: Hungarian Airforce 1990ies MiG-23 MF@ airliners MiG-23 MF@ airliners Incredients: Italeri MiG-23 MF Eduard BiG ED for MIg-23 Flogger Resin nose for the MIg-29 from fox3tornado (ebay, US) that resemles the floggers nose quite well. (Quickboosts Mig-29 resin version is noticably different ) various bits and bytes form Eduard excellent Mig-21 kits (R-60, pylons, maybe canopy parts, seat) I've already started cutting and some modification: more in the next post!
