  1. I started Airfix's 1/72 Swordfish mk I, and after looking at some cockpit photos, is there a fuel/oil tank behind the intrument panel? Whatever it is, in some photos it is red brown, similar colour as Mosquito tanks I have seen in photos. Is the lower section with smooth corners on part 10A (it's the instrument panel) supposed to be a tank, or a section of it? Also concerning the colours, I will use Light Gull Gray for Cerrux Grey, but is there a lacquer straight from the bottle, that would be a good representation of aluminium dope? There's probably no period photos in colour, but I haven't found good photos of restored aircraft with aluminium dope either. Previously I have mixed aluminium or silver with white or light grey, but it would easier to use something straight from the bottle. How shiny or dull was the dope? I have got for instance Tamiya LP-38, MRP-009 white aluminium and MRP-008 silver.
  2. As I come close to the conclusion of my HMS Wren build over in the Maritime section, I'd like to drop a place marker for the next project. On the night of 10/11 November 1940 21 Fairey Swordfish Mk.I's launched from HMS Illustrious and Eagle in two waves on a six hour round-trip to attack the Regia Marina in its harbour at Taranto. The mission was the culmination of a highly coordinated operation by the Royal Navy involving six separate Forces and two convoys. The total RN units engaged was three carriers, a battle squadron of four vessels led by HMS Warspite, a destroyer squadron of 12 destroyers, plus another 33 vessels of varying types. The plan of attack was elegantly simple; two waves were sent an hour apart. Approaching their targets from the west, two Swordfish were tasked with dropping flares along the eastern side of the harbour creating backlighting to sillouhette the target capital ships at anchor in the Mar Grande. Each wave comprised both torpedo and bomb armed aircraft - those with torpedoes attacked the capital ships and those with bomb went after the cruisers and destroyers in the Mar Piccolo. The attack was a success, aside form the not inconsiderable damage caused, it had the additional effect of pinning the Italian Navy in its northern ports for the remainder of its involvement in the war. Two of the attacking Swordfish were lost, one of the crews was picked up and made POW, sadly the other perished when their Swordfish sustained a direct hit hit from shore-based AA fire. I am building the Tamiya 1/48 scale Swordfish Mk.I more or less out of the box for this project. I haven't decided which of the attacking aircraft I will mark mine up as, but I'm erring towards either L4M flown by Lt H. Swayne of 815 Squadron off HMS Illustrious or L5F flown by Lt. E. W. Clifford of 819 Squadron also off HMS Illustrious. For reasons I'll touch on later, both of these pilots had epic nights, even more so than their squadron-mates if that were possible. I'll likely begin the build in a week or so I expect. I know we have a lot of FAA experts on board, I look forward to my continuing eduction of all things FAA with this build. Cheers.
  3. Was walking along a night flea market in Pattaya, Thailand when I came across an old man selling this kit. Of all the places to have found a kit. Managed to buy it for about the equivalent of GBP8. It seems to have all the parts but the decals are gone. Some of the parts have been cut from the sprue but it seems all there. Now wondering what to do with it. Should I build it? I mainly do jets. Have to stencil and spray the decals though. Too bad the fella is not selling a 1/48 F-14 or something.
  4. Hello. I'm New to Britmodeller but have been back building for a year or so after the mighty break of about 30 odd years. This here Fish is my 4th build since the come back. I stalked this sight for a while during the build of my Mosquito and Messerschmitt but decided to jump in a month or so ago and do a Work in progress of my latest build. I have no real connection to the Swordfish other than I have always loved this kind of plane and have never had the opportunity to build one. I didn't really research much before I started. However during the build I was eagerly watching other builds and seeing how involved you all get about paint, weathering, dates, serial numbers etc. . "The Baron" in particular was and still is a brilliant WIP for me as we are building our fishes in parallel. Any way after many ups and downs, strangeness and charm I managed to get it completed, I'm really happy with the result but can't help but see the myriad of flaws that I hit during the build. the most important thing however is that it was fun, I hope whoever watched the build thought it was fun too. Posting my progress here has been such a help to the build, I can't actually wait to get stuck in to my next one, so keep em peeled it won't be long. Bloody hell I do waffle some times, I hope you like the pics. There are so many excellent modellers on this site I hope that My little Fish passes muster. Here we go then. There is rather a lot. That's all folks. Thanks to everyone for all the great feedback and support along the way. Here is a link to the Work in progress. http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234999461-my-first-wip-148th-scale-tamiya-fairey-swordfish-mk2/ All the best and Happy modelling you lot. John "The Spadgent"
  5. Hi guys. This will be my first go at doing a work in progress on one of my models. Inspired by "The Baron" showing his Matchbox swordfish w.i.p on here the other day. I'm a few weeks in and have taken some photos along the way but usually near completed sections so the first few pics are a big old jump, I will take more step by step pics now I know I'm doing this. Well here we go then. I am building as the title says Tamiya's 1/48 scale Fairey Swordfish. This is a big one for me as its my first ever String bag and only my fourth build since taking up my boyhood hobby again a year or so ago. not sure how long this will take to complete but its going to be fun. (for me anyway). {C} Here is the obligatory box shot with a little taste of the cave. Oh god the pictures are massive again.... Please shout up if this is a problem. Moving swiftly on, this was actually the first pic I got to take after the pit went together. I was happy with the way it was going but didn't want to use the decal belts. I had bought the PE parts and thought they came with belts but alas this wasn't the case so I thought I'd have a go at making some. Britmodeller to the rescue. OK I'm going to post this now and see how it goes. I just lost my internets and had to write this out again so It's bit at a time I'm afraid. Enjoy. John.
  6. This is the new-tool Fairey Swordfish Mk.1 from the Airfix Club "Sparks of Liberation" boxing. I built it in tribute to my Grandfather, Joseph Liam Guerin, happily still with us, whose ship RFA Brown Ranger supported the Operation Torch landings. It represents V4448, a Swordfish of 833 Sqn, aboard HMS Biter. It is nicely detailed, and the final product looks good, to my eyes. Decals apply cleanly, although I would recommend some sort of setting solution such as decal fix, especially for the fuselage codes, given the profile of the area over which they sit. I was surprised how few stencils there were, but perhaps the FAA didn't go in for them? The moulding of some parts is very fine, which is great, but it does demand particular care in removing them, as the plastic is inclined to both bend and snap! The outer wing struts have a subsidiary strut behind them, and I broke both whilst extracting them, so I eventually abandoned my side cutters for the finer pieces. From the instructions I wasn't sure how to assemble the cockpit tub and made the wrong choice, making it slightly too wide, which it then needed a lot of glue, clamping and brute force to correct when I put the fuselage halves together. The efforts made by Airfix to simplify the assembly of the wings were effective, though. This build for the first time I 90% finished painting the fuselage and inner surfaces of the wings before putting them together, which I found substantially easier, and will try to remember next time. I wish I had thought to put on the lower wing decals at the same time! The Airfix painting guide doesn't show the standard RAF/FAA fin flash in use, but I found a French profile which did, and so followed that element of it. I also followed the other profile, and deviated from the painting guide, by roughly painting-out the "Royal" of "Royal Navy" above the port and starboard serial codes. To achieve the overall camouflage scheme, I applied an interpretation of the two schemes to create the camouflage pattern, as the Airfix painting guide showed the same pattern on both port and starboard sides, which seemed inherently unlikely, as well as being contradicted by the overhead view. It is also worth noting that some of the painting instructions given in the course of the build are different from those parts as shown in the painting guide, for example the bomb racks and rocket carriers, which are both 85 Coal Black according to the instructions, but 90 Beige Green (approx Sky) according to the painting guide. The kit comes with a torpedo and its impedimenta plus two extra rockets, and so is a useful source of spares. Overall a very good kit.
