I have 3 of these kits, plus an Academy (ex-Hobbycraft) 'J' kit. The Revell kit was first issued in 1991 (at least that's the year on the mold stamp), and I would have bought it not long afterwards: While obviously a very nice kit for its time (and superior to the Hobbycraft tooling IMHO*), the German-printed decals were not the best, so I left it in the stash. *Although Hobbycraft issued a much wider range of variants. Fast forward to 2013, and the kit was reissued with Cartograf decals, and I eagerly bought two of this release: I am building the 'J' version with 2 x Genie nuclear-tipped rockets and 4 x Falcon missiles, but also the composite fuel/rocket pods on the wing tips, which were originally carried by the 'D' version, as per the box-art. As all 'J' aircraft were converted 'D' aircraft, these pods must have been readily available, and the Revell instructions are quite clear that they could be carried by the 'J'. There are separate decals for the pilot's main instrument panel, depending on the version.

Time for another WIP. I must admit I cannot put my finger on why I love this plane so much. Sadly my previous attempts at building this fugly flying machine was limited to the Academy offerings. Not bad (not great either) as kits, but the decals really let them down. Tried twice, failed twice. Hopefully 3rd time is the charm. Sexy contents pics: Box art, showing two Scorpions probably turning Palmdale into a war zone. Cough. Decals, printed in Italy so should be good. Please let them be good ... Sprues in silver plastic. Eurgh. Recessed panel lines, need to check if that's all over unlike the Academy that has raised ones in a few spots. And unlike the Academy, I get some under wing drop tanks! Huzzah! Now, need to decide which version I'm going for. Both are appealing, the D with the sharkmouth or the J loaded for Bear hunting (don't think they ever carried that much ordinance, but I think it looks menacing, so I win ). So far the D is looking thr winner, will decide tonight. If this goes well, I will definitely get another one for the other version... As for the NMF, going to use Vallejo Metal Color. So hold thumbs!

"This box is too big, takes up too much space - can you build it?" My dads words. Good reason as any to build a kit, right? I think he just wants more space for new kits... I got back in the model making beginning of this year - and got my dad interested again too. I think it's only fitting as it was my dad who got me introduced into model making and aviation all those years ago. We used to build kits together - but the hobby has been on bit of a hiatus for 20-25 years now. But this year has been model making madness and I've been loving it! We both have pretty clear focus - my dad is into 1/48 WWII stuff and my main interest is cold war 1/72 jets. But it's fun to dabble 'outside the box' every now and then, right? So my dad has couple old jets in his stash that he's probably never gonna build - and we've had a deal: I pick a kit from his stash, build it, he gets it back for display - then I pick a new kit. Win-win, really - I get to build them, but I don't have to worry about where to put them all & keep 'em dust free - - - - - - - - - - - - So, what I will be building: Revell F-89D/J Scorpion (kit number 4568), 1/48 scale, released in 1990. I will be doing the D-version as in the box art. It's a pretty large aircraft (still not as large as the box suggests) and I reckon it will look pretty cool once done. I've taken a little head start, already went ahead and built the cockpit. Honestly, the kit as a whole seems bit dated with raised panel lines & ill fitting parts - but the cockpit isn't half bad! - - - - - - - - - That's for today. Oh, and hi to everybody - been lurking in the forums for better part of this year - nice to finally contribute something to it.

Hi everyone, There have been a few F-89 Scorpions in RFI recently and this is mine that I finished for Telford. The kit is the Revell kit and I used the design of the original decals to print my own for the checks as the white had turned yellow on the decal sheet. Masks were created for the star and bars as the ones on the decal sheet were not well produced. Vallejo and Revell acrylics were used. Robert
