  1. I was having a tidy up in the man cave and found some forgotten Revell paints. Most I have identified but Revell 41 (a mustard colour), Revell 72 (a Dark Grey) and Revell 73 (a medium grey) stubbornly defy classification. They are not shown in Revell's 5 digit reference codes and I can't see a mention of them on t'web not indeed a site for discontinued Revell paint generally. So before I E Mail Revell in Germany (or bin them) can anybody help? TIA
  2. Hola comrades. Does anyone use Tamiya's enamel paints? My favorite silver paint i've ever used is Model Master's chrome silver but since they're discontinued i've been considering what to get to replace it if I can't find any more. Metallic paints in acrylic suck in my opinion so would you recommend Tamiya's enamel chrome silver?
  3. Recently Steve Larsen at Model Monkey sent me some of his newer in-house 3D printed resin parts to test with enamel paints. This was following a much earlier test we did when he designed but sold through the third party 3D printing company Shapeways, who used to claim that 3D printed parts were incompatible with enamels. We demonstrated this to be false; Shapeways supplied parts need to be cured properly before painting using UV light, then enamel works fine. The old problem was that Shapeways didn't fully cure them before shipping! Model Monkey's new in-house produced parts are much lower cost to you, the customer, now that Shapeways has been cut out of the loop and the quality is further improved. The parts are 1/350 HMS King George V class fore and aft funnels, 1/350 Royal Navy Mk.V HACS Directors and a 1/200 HMS Hood forward funnel. I already own Model Monkey's HMS Hood aft funnel to replace Trumpeter's error, so this completes the set! For this test, the part has not been washed or primed or had any other surface treatment carried out. I understand they are cleaned in isopropylalcohol by Model Monkey at the end of the printing process, and whatever condition this was in when it went into the box is exactly how it will be painted with enamel. I have only cut away the framing that supports the part as it's printed. I will be using our NARN21 Admiralty Pattern 507A Home Fleet Grey, and the thinner shall be our first recommendation always - our Colourcoats naptha based thinner. The Colourcoats was airbrushed on normally, thinned 50/50 through my Badger Renegade Krome at 15psi. As with any other model material, the paint was touch dry in less than 5 minutes. I gave it a further 5 minutes to be safe, then masked over with fresh Tamiya tape to spray some C02 Matt Black on the funnel cap area. A fair test should see if masking tape pulls the paint off... Complete success. I am happy to report that Steve's new in-house 3D printed parts are fully compatible with enamels. Out of interest, here's how the corrected Home Fleet Grey looks compared to my incorrectly painted 1/350 Hood in "AP507B Medium Grey" :Mad_5:
  4. It's a very soggy day in Aberdeenshire today and therefore one purpose made for model making indoors! It has taken me far too long to get around to having a more formalised presence here on Britmodeller and hope to share some of what we're doing both in the UK and internationally. 13 months ago I read on Facebook that White Ensign Models were to cease trading. This came as a shock and huge disappointment. I've been making models since I was a child with both my father and grandfather but had only fairly recently got back in to it properly after a break where starting careers and family got in the way. I'm quite clear on what happened after that Facebook announcement but how it all happened is a bit of a mystery and somehow I ended up owning my favourite paint brand. We started the new company immediately but it took us some time set up properly. I dislike chaos and wanted to do things properly. Colourcoats was relaunched at the Scottish Nationals model show in Perth in April 2015, the first commercial order was dispatch to the USA shortly after and our shiny new webstore opened for UK Mainland customers in June. I mostly model aeroplanes and ships myself, and soon after getting Colourcoats up and running again, I realised I could no longer obtain most of my favourite naval modelling products in particular, so we have thus far reinvested everything we've taken into improving that situation in the UK, and now offer White Ensign Models again (now imported from California), Pontos Models and new-start Infini Model both from South Korea. More is on the way this quarter. We're just rolling out colour boxsets at the moment which are proving popular already, happily. The Colourcoats paint range currently comprises: Colourcoats Sea. Modern Naval The Great War United States Navy Imperial Japanese Navy Royal Navy Kriegsmarine (German navy) Regia Marina (Italian navy) Colourcoats Land. Australian Army Imperial Japanese Army Army for Defence for Israel United States Army Red Army (Soviet) British Army Wehrmacht (German army) Regia Esercito (Italian army) Colourcoats Air. The Great War Armee de l'Air (French air force) US Army Air Corps / US Air Force / US Navy Imperial Japanese Army and Navy Royal Air Force / Fleet Air Arm Luftwaffe (German air force) Royal Australian Air Force Regia Aeronautica (Italian air force) Royal Netherlands Air Force
