Spitfire Mk.Ia Decals (48-174) 1:72, 1:48 & 1:32 EagleCals Decals We’ve never been short of Mk.1 Spits in any scale, but there have been a few new 1:48 kits from a couple of manufacturers of late, and it’s only natural that decal manufacturers are on the spot providing some alternative options to what can be found in the decal sheet within your kit’s box. EagleCals are one of those happy band, and have released this set of three specific airframes from early war, namely 1940 in the run up to, and during the Battle of Britain. The set arrives in the almost ubiquitous (for decal sets) ziplok bag, with the A3+ cover sheet and instruction booklet folded into four at the front, and two sheets of decals within, the smaller of the two containing the overflow of the first option with the Kiwi bird on the side. Decals are by Cartograf, which is a guarantee of good registration, sharpness and colour density, with a thin gloss carrier film cut close to the printed areas. The instructions guide you through the decaling process, with the stencils on separate diagrams to avoid confusion, and photographic quality side profiles show where the rest of the decals go, with a little help from some smaller top/bottom profiles overleaf. There is a lot of background information for each option along with a little blurb about the Spitfire in general, and the former is shown below along with the profiles of your options. The quality of research is clearly very dilligent, and the instructions take the time to thank Mark Proulx for his help, and credits James Bentley for the excellent profiles. Conclusion For a Mk.Ia Spit, this is an excellent set, offering three options, some of which you may have heard of, printed by the de facto gold standard of decal printers. Great instructions round out the package. Highly recommended. Opening a new can of worms today with a question for Luftwaffe modellers. What paint brand do you use for RLM78? I have various brands attempts at RLM78 but none of them seem to get close to the paint chips that I have for that colour (Merrick's and Eagle Editions). I have the following versions of RLM78: Polyscale, Vallejo's Model Air, Mr Color, Mr Hobby, Xtracrylix, Hataki, AK Interactive. They are all either too purple, too dark or basically just wrong so what other recommendations do we have out there please? Duncan B

Decals for Mosquito Mk.IV and Mk.VI Eagle Editions 1:32 For many years those modellers who chose to build in 1:32 scale were limited in their choice of Mosquito kits to build, particularly injection moulded kits. Now, in this golden age we have the choice of two super. Modern injection moulded kits of the Wooden Wonder. EagleCal decals have now released two sets, one for the HK Models kit and one for the Tamiya kit. Both are contained in zip lock bags and come with an A5 pamphlet, which opens out to A3 size. The decal placement for the models are mostly in colour with large side views, smaller top and bottom views on one side, plus the stencil placement and aircraft colour call-outs on the other. Each of the two sheets in each set are beautifully printed, in register, nicely opaque and with a thin carrier film, of which there is very little as the decals are quite closely cropped. Set EC#167 is for the HK Models Mk.IV and contains five aircraft options but with stencils for only one aircraft. The Options are:- Mosquito Mk.IV, DK310, LY-G, Grim Reaper of No.1 PRU, August 1942 Mosquito Mk.IV, DK333, HS-F of No.109 Sqn 1944 Mosquito Mk.IV, KB195, AZ-B of No.627 Sqn, June 1944 Mosquito Mk.IV, DK337, GB-N, Uncle Sam, of No.105 Sqn, May 1943 Mosquito Mk.IV, DZ415, AZ-Q of No. 627 Sqn, Early 1945 Set EC#169 is for the Tamiya Mk.VI and contains four aircraft options, and again one set of stencils. The four options are:- Mosquito Mk.VI, HR551, UX-P of No.82 Sqn from the Summer of 1945 Mosquito Mk.VI, HP913, SM-W of No.305 Sqn, November 1944 Mosquito Mk.VI, NS927, SM-C of No.305 Sqn from Autumn 1944 Mosquito Mk.VI, MM403, SB-V of No.464 Sqn, September 1944 Conclusion As with the P-47 decals I reviewed some time ago, these are so well printed it seems a shame to actually use them. They have almost a vibrant quality that you don’t often see, even on aftermarket sheet. Decals for Fw.190Fs #165 1:72, 1:48 & 1:32 Eagle Editions Eagle Editions' new sheet for the Fw.190F is timed for the release of the new Revell kit in 1:32, but is suitable for any other kit of the F, which is the ground-attack variant of the A. The decals arrive in a ziplok bag, and inside is a folded A3+ combined backing card and instruction booklet that gives the modeller a lot of information about the choices available, as well as some nicely done large profiles, top views with scrap views of the underwing crosses, and a stencil placement guide. The aircraft available from the sheet are as follows: "Black 5" W.Nr. Unknown Luftflotte 4 April 1945 Frankfurt am Main, Germany Fw 190 F-8. Pilot: Unknown. "Black 2" Werknummer Unknown Luftflotte 4 Fw 190 F-9. Pilot: Unknown. "Green 3" W.Nr. 588717 St.II/SG 2 1945 Milovice, Czechoslovakia Arado built Fw 190 F-8. Pilot: Unknown. "Red 2" Werknummer Unknown Luftflotte 4 Fw 190 F-8. Pilot: Unknown. The sheet is broken down into areas by dotted red lines, with one of each of the four sections for the decals specific to each option, and the reminder covering the national markings and stencils. The Swastikas are printed with their middles removed, and if you want to reinstate them, you must layer another decal containing the balance of the shape on top. It's not the most elegant solution in terms of thickness, but it does allow the modeller to put the outer section in as a representation without breaching any local laws or upsetting anyone. The decals are printed by Cartograf, so you can be assured that registration, sharpness and colour density is up there with the best, with a thin, closely cropped glossy carrier film. Conclusion A very nicely presented, printed and documented set of decals from EagleCals, with considerate touches such as patches of decal material to apply where previous markings had been painted over on the real thing.
