  1. Dear fellow Britmodellers, this is my 1/72 Hasegawa Ju-88 D1 in markings of the Romanian Air Force in 1944/45. Painted with Mr.Hobby acrylics, pictures by Wolfgang Rabel. This aircraft belonged to Escadrilla 2 Recunoastere and was based at Miskolc airfield in Hungary, and later at Tri Dubny Slovakia, in the winter of 1944/45. All markings are from the DK decal sheet "Romanian Roundels over Czechoslovakia 1944-1945 (72088)". It apparently changed management when Romania switched sides, because the German crosses, swastikas and squadron codes were hastily painted over. Several aftermarket parts had accumulated in the kit box, including two Eduard sets (interior and exterior), Eduard masks and True Details wheels. Only the canopy paint masks are absolutely necessary - the Eduard interior etched parts can hardly be seen, from the exterior set I only used antennas, landing gear doors and a few other small things, the rest seemed superfluous to me. The Hasegawa kit wheels are pretty good, the True Details resin wheels are a little better and flattened nicely. During painting I noticed that the contrast between Mr.Hobby's RLM70/71 is a bit too strong. I added a small drop of black to the lighter color (RLM71 Dark Green) to soften the contrast. I weathered with artist oils from Winsor & Newton. The nose glazing doesn't fit very well and left a (invisible) gap through which a little spray mist crept in at the edge! Overpainted squadron codes and national insignia .... Now here's the underside ... Thank you for your interest, best greetings from Austria! Roman
  2. Hello all, Here is one that I finished last week that I finally got around to getting some photos of before it gets too dusty. It is the Airfix kit in the colours of a 31 Squadron R.A.A.F Mk X machine based at Coomalie Creek in the Northern Territory. This aircraft was lost on 24/09/44 after running out of fuel after it was unable to locate the airfield due to bushfire haze. The Navigator was found the following day but unfortunately the pilot was killed. According to the DK Decal sheet this aircraft is painted in TSS camouflage, however other sources state that the last batch of Mk Xs and XIs were painted all over EDSG on Sky so that's what I went with. I also painted the roundels and fin flashes which worked out better than I hoped, except when I painted the lower LH wing roundel too far inboard resulting in some stripping and re-painting. I thought about cutting masks for the SQN codes, but I'm not that handy with a scalpel and Tamiya tape. I've put a stencil cutter on the Christmas list. All photos were taken using my phone, so apologies for any blurriness. One of the pilots in 30 SQN played Australian Rules Football for the Richmond Football Club in the Victorian Football League (now Australian Football League). Richmond is also known as the Tigers and the pilot painted a Tigers head on the nose of his aircraft. The Tigers head and motto 'Eat 'em Alive' also found its way onto 31 SQN aircraft due to a keen Richmond supporter in the unit, with multiple aircraft displaying the Tigers heads. And here it is with another one I completed about 18 months ago. Thanks for looking.
  3. #1/2022 When my dad started the Aleutian P-38 last year, I thought wouldn´t it be nice if it had some company? So he built a P-40K. Sadly 1/48 decals for this theatre are rare and we didn´t want to do a usual tigerhead scheme. Finally found a nice scheme from DK Decals. Used the Hasegawa kit, EZ line for brake lines and antenna wires, seatbelts done with decals from the sparesbox, block tread tires from Ultracast. Had some problems attaching the rear windows. As most of the time my dad tried it first with Micro Klear. To avoid a visible bead, he only applied it sparsely. Therefore the windows fell out again. the he used plastic glue, which ate into the surface. Removed the windows again, sanded and polished them and tried it again with Micro Klear. Also had to do some repainting. All in all the rear window area doesn´t look that nice now. Painted the camo with Tamiya XF-53 Neutral Grey and a selfmixed olive. The DuPont painted replacement parts are done with AK Real Color Dark Earth and Dark Green. 4. Dear fellow Britmodellers, here's my 1/72 Tamiya Bf-109 G6 in markings of the Romanian Air Force in 1945. Painted with acrylics from Mr.Hobby, photos by Wolfgang Rabel. I got this kit for birthday a few weeks ago - thank you, Gerhard! I built almost straigt from the box. My only additions are the headrest armor (a photo-etch part from Brengun) and the antenna under the fuselage (stretched black sprue). Markings are from DK Decals "Romanian Roundels Over Czechoslovakia" (DK72088). "Tumpi-Bumpi Flostomok" was the mount of Lt. Baciu from Grupul 1 Vanatorare, in May 1945. The Tamiya kit is clever in design and easy to build. The kits marking options, however, are rather drab, so I chose this colorful bird of the Romanian Air Force. The upper side camo was free-handed using my Harder & Steenbeck Evolution with 0,15mm nozzle. Thank you for your interest. Roman
  5. I convinced my dad to give the Aleutian P-38 some company. Because most modelers build the 11th FS tiger scheme, we do an 18th FS aircraft, using a Hasegawa kit and DK Decals. DSC_0003 by grimreaper110, auf Flickr DSC_0004 by grimreaper110, auf Flickr DSC_0005 by grimreaper110, auf Flickr
  6. Hello, I haven`t done a build recently, so decided to join with the Revell boxing of the Hasegawa Mk9 Spitfire in /48th scale using a Brengun resin and etch conversion of a MkVII along with the DK decals. I haven`t decided on a scheme yet but have always liked the medium sea grey and PRU blue scheme for high altitude operations. So will undoubtedly go with one of those. Either MD120 "Spirit of Kent" or coded "PB". Thanks for looking... Grahame
  7. This is my first post so I hope that I can be as good as those before me. 458 Squadron (RAAF) an Article XV squadron was formed at RAAF Williamtown, on the Central Coast of New South Wales, Australia on the 10th of July, 1941. It was sent to England to be a part of Bomber Command and was based at Holme On Spalding Moor on the 1st of September, 1941. In February, 1942, it was sent to the Middle East where it commenced operations. It was issued with Vickers Wellington bombers. The model that I am building is the Wellington shown on the DK decal sheet, Wellington Mk1c,MkVIII,CMk XVI (72066) number 6 of 458 Squadron. I have received from Ed Russell of Red Roo Models, from Melbourne, a sample of the "fairing" that replaces the front turret. The fairing comes in a cream coloured resin. It needs a small amount of sanding to fit quite well into position. As can be seen below I have highlighted the area that needs removal. There is already a line there for a guide which is there for the nose replacement that for the MKVIII conversion. I built the model as per instructions which. I was very impressed with that. To give a bit of stability I added the Part D19 for the fairing to sit on but you you could do it without it if you wish. After a little bit of sanding and filling it goes into position quite easily and to me looks right.
  8. Dear fellow Britmodellers, after a longer absence from the workbench I'm reporting back-in-charge with my 1/72 Airfix Wellington IC! I used Eduard's interior set, Quickboost wheels and DK Decals, representing an aircraft from 311. (Czech) Squadron in 1943. All photographs by Wolfgang Rabel. I decided to install all the interior parts, literally recreating the aircraft from top to bottom. This process takes up most of the construction time, but you will be rewarded with a very detailed inside. Of course, you won't see much once the fuselage is closed. The model was painted with Gunze/Mr.Hobby acrylics. I am not very happy with my paint job, I should have paid more attention to pre- and post-shading, as the surface looks a bit plain and boring. Even the crew's entry ladder is supplied by the kit. Superb rendition of the FN turrets. Open side windows on the canopy - another nice feature of the kit: The bomb bay can be posed open or closed, and six bombs are supplied. That leaves the middle bomb bay empty. I added three bombs, borrowed from an Eduard 1/72 Spitfire kit. The red rings are airbrushed, using small strips of Tamiya masking tape. And I forgot to peel the center mask off the bombardier's windows…. ! Scratches on the engine housings were replicated with a soft pencil. Airfix' wheels are slightly oversized and were replaced with resin items from Quickboost. The triangle-shaped waist gun windows are included on the sprues, although the instruction sequence does not mention them. The guns are included as well. Thank you for your interest, best greetings from Vienna.
  9. Hello, Here's my recently finished 1/48 Tamiya Beaufighter Mk.VIf, done as ND243 "Kampala Queen", as flown by W/O Roy Butler and radar operator W/O Ray Graham with No. 46 Squadron in the Eastern Mediterranean. You can read about their missions from Gambut in Libya here. I used decals from DK Decals. Now, these performed well, and are nicely printed, it appears that at least the profile and colour instructions for this one are somewhat dubious. The profile suggested this one was painted in the Temperate Sea Scheme, but a discussion here on BM suggested it was more likely that it flew in the standard night fighter colours Dark Green, Medium Sea Grey and Night undersides. So that's what I did, using Humbrol for the top, and Tamiya for the bottom. Now, I know not a whole lot about Beaufighters, so there might be a few errors here and there. The exhaust collector ring is a bit too shiny for a plane that has been flying around for a while now, and the paint looks maybe a tad too fresh for months of desert and sea operations. But hey, fun was had, and that's what counts. I hope you like it. Thanks for looking.
  10. #26/2016 After my dad started the Eduard Israeli Spit and learned how to build this kit, he decided to build the second and last Eduard Spit of our stash too. After two two-color schemes he wanted to do something easier. I suggested a Foliage Green Aussie Spit and he liked it. Sadly the decal aftermarket for green Spits isn´t big. Finally I found a nice sheet from DK Decals (Czech made, good quality, but limited series of 200pcs)which included one green scheme. Used Eduard Super-Fabric seatbelts and Eduard Brassin block tread wheels, painted with Gunze H302 for Foliage Green and Gunze RLM65 for RAAF Sky Blue. The model shows the a/c of Sqn Ldr Ron Susans, 79Sqn RAAF, first Mk.VIII raised through the Australian Victory Bond. P.S.: Thanks to fellow Hyperscaler/Britmodeller Ed Russel for providing info and pics!
  11. All, Looks like Franta has been busy once again with the development of three new 1/72 Beaufighter sheets. http://www.dkdecals.cz These seem to tie in with the new Airfix kit, however the decal sheet covers would suggest quite a few early Mk.1, IV's and RAAF XXI's are going to be provided as well. Full details are still not known, however the artwork will probably follow in a few weeks / month or so. There's also a RAAF Liberator sheet in 1/72 as well. Cheers... Dave.
  12. All, Every now and again I go back to the DK Decals main website and check (in hope) that new decals are on the way. I can happily announce that two new Catalina decals sheets are being produced, however as yet the decal sheet and instruction lay-out are yet to be fully published. Two of Qantas' famous "Double Sunrise" Cats are included on 72020, which having worked for the airline for over 27 years I'm am truly excited.. http://dkdecals.cz/ Thanks Franta - nice one my friend. Cheers .. Dave.
