  1. Hi I would like to join with this F4U-1 (or -2) "Birdcage" Corsair Tamiya 1/48th scale I have not yet chosen the subject: I have already built the white 20 of the Marines VMF-213 in 1/72 scale but it remains my favorite for early 2 tone camo and the presence of the eagle on the engine cowl Second of the list is one of the two night fighter of the Marines VMF(N)-532 (black 205 or 212) , last but don't least , the 3 (actually 4) tone camo 17-F-13 of the Navy VF-17 PS the same model had been presented for the Pacific at war GB but was not suitable for the regulation for which I changed the subject I would like to show you my other Corsair build This is the model mentioned above (Tamiya 1/72nd with Sky Models decal) An old French F4U-7 - (Italeri 1/72nd with Sky Models decal) A RNZAF Corsair built for Pacific at war GB in 2018 (Revell 1/72nd with Sky Models and Ventura Publications decal , thanks to LDSModeller )
  2. Dear All, So I have made a start on my latest model. I do this for fun/relaxation, not so good at it.....but getting better. Here is the pit/office all done..........................and yes, before anyone says anything, the interior green isn't correct.....but its what I had and is good enough for my humble needs. Enjoy........comments / suggestions (good or bad) welcome as they will only make my skills improve.
  3. Hi fellow modelers, I am currently building a Kinetic 1/48 Prowler. One of the areas I am pretty much interested is the avionics bay at the tail of this beautiful bird, also known as "birdcage". There is a lot of material out there for the birdcage itself, but I am more interested in the inside the fuselage area corresponding to it. This area is omitted by most modelers, as once the Birdcage is posed open, it prohibits eye contact to it. My intention is to add as much internal detail as possible. Since I do not want to build it based on Star Trek plans and blueprints, I wonder if any of you have any photos, plans or any other material that could help and that you are willing to share, for this area. Copyrights will be taken into account very seriously, so in case that you prefer, instead of posting here, sent me a pm or an e-mail. Any help will be most appreciated. Thank you in advance, DIO
  4. Hi guys! Let me show you one o my older plane. It was a really quick building out of the box, with some scratchbuilding just for fun! Hope you like it, thanks for watching! Matyi from Hungary
  5. I still remember one of the early models my mother bought for me, at a time I was very young to go to the centre of Athens and buy kits myself. It was an Academy F4U. I even bought my first reference book for a model back then. That was some 25ish years go. Ever since I always felt that the F4U was the most striking WW2 airplane along with the Spitfire. When Tamiya introduced their 1/32 gem I began contemplating building one. However, for reasons of space and (at the time) money, I decided to try the 1/48 first - kind of like a rehearsal. Tamiya's 1/48 is a good kit. A very good kit. But when its big brother came out, I felt it was kinda felt left behind - even after one considers the scale difference. In my eyes it got left behind big way. Especially when it comes to the cockpit, lots of details (granted, not easily visible in 1/48) are omitted. So, I set out to add some detail, not with expensive after-market kits - which would increase my budget for his kit but with a bit of scratch-building here and there. Along with Tamiya's kit I will use photo-etched parts from Eduard, including the placards and resin wheels and control surfaces just to add a bit of character there. In the process some more after-market kits where added, so the original plan was somewhat... extended. My first modifications were to rebuilt the mounting mechanism for the pilots seat (Tamiya has a hideous solid slope-y mount there), add the front plates of the feet-rest, add wiring here and there and replace some of the clunky controls. Below are pictures of the cockpit parts and the sides which detail reworked and added where missing. I also added the air-hose and the map pouch.I removed the headrest as well - seems that many early Corsairs did not have those so I thought I'd do mine that way too. The instrument panel and harness from Eduard. The latter was modified with some brass foil to add a bit of depth and 'randomness' (sec photo). Prior to painting, everything was primed with AK Interactive grey primer. I have to admit I quite liked this primer, easy to spray and my wife did not complain about the smell! Awesome! The cockpit was then pre-shaded, especially on the head-rest and seat-mount mechanism. I mixed my own shade of Dark Green and washed everything with Light Earth oil. I have to admit working with a dark-coloured cockpit was something I have not done before in my 'second modelling life' and I was afraid I was going to mess it up. But I am happy with how things turned out.I had do omit the bob lever by the pilot seat - I need to think how to rebuilt it and fit it in the space I got there. 'Till next time, thnx for watching
  6. F4U-1 Corsair "Birdcage" Replacement Masks for Tamyia Kit Decals 1:32 Maketar These masks are direct replacements for the markings provided by Tamyia in the kit. In addition you get spare and additional code letters. A set of canopy masks are also included. The masks come on four main sheets for the markings and additional letters. They are available in either vinyl or yellow Kabuki tape. The advantage with the tape ones is that they are lower tack and much easier to reposition if you get things wrong. One word of note is that the small elements like nose and fuselage art are NOT included the modeller will need to use decals for those. There are no instructions but then they are not really needed. Recommended for those who don't like decals, or if you want the true painted on look for your large scale Corsair. Review sample courtesy of
  7. Deciding to put Tamiya's Corsair on the bench was a no-brainer. Having built the Mustang and Spitfire, I expected top notch engineering etc, but this one somehow...unexplainably...was even better than expected. I'll say it every time I talk about one of Tamiya's super kits, but every modeler deserves to treat themselves to one of these kits at least once. Kit: Tamiya 1/32 Birdcage Corsair AM: Barracuda cockpit stencils and decals, Barracuda resin tires (If Barracuda makes items for a kit I'm building I buy it...stuff is that good. Paint: Tamiya custom mixes, airbrush and oil weathering
  8. Hi All This is my go at Tamiya's big Corsair. The main body colour is UA038 LifeColour, the rest of the paint work is Tamiya. These 1/32 series kits go together perfectly, leaving more time to play with the paint job! Hope you like it!
  9. G'Day Britmodellers, I just joined a couple of weeks ago and this is my first thread. Aviation has been a very important part of my life, and a source of motivation not for this beautiful hobby but for other daily activities as well. I love WWII warbirds, post war jets, and every flying machine out there captures my attention in a very special way. I love visiting museums as well, and soon in October I’ll be visiting the USAF National Museum in Dayton Ohio. This museum has been a dream since I was a kid, when I knew of its existence when my father bought a subscription of the National Geographic Magazine. I’ll spend 3 days visiting so I can capture as much details as I can, I expect to share this visit with you. When I was a kid I probably built a dozen of 1/72 Matchbox F4U Corsair and Zero fighters, those that came with a clear stand with a flexible joint so the kit could be displayed in different flight attitudes. I built them without putting much care into details, with too much glue, fingerprints everywhere, landing gear misaligned, missing decals, etc. I just wanted to have them built as fast as I could, maybe in an hour or so and play with them. After some nostalgic memories of the good old days, today I’ll share with you a 1/48 Tamiya bent wing F4U-1 Corsair Birdcage Item 61046. I just got the brand new 1/32nd and I expect to upload the building process soon, I can’t wait to start digging in that big box, built it and start doing what I like the most, painting, weathering and finishing. I couldn’t close my jaws for a while after opening the box. The level of detail of the aerodynamic surfaces is just amazing, and I can foresee endless possibilities when painting, weathering and finishing. Going back to the 1/48th Birdcage, source of information, is the well known series of books Aircraft of the Aces - 8 “Corsair Aces of the World War 2” by Mark Styling from Osprey Publishing. This is an excellent source of information. Although with black & white pictures, they give a very good source for painting and weathering, providing several pictures with maintenance crew working on the ship while on the flight line. The built is OOB with the exception of the Eduard photo etched interior set EU4103 and the True Details resin wheels. The subject is the F4U-1 white 20 of the 1st Lt Foy R ”Poncho” Garison VMF-213 in Guadalcanal July 1943. Referenced in page 17 of the Osprey book. He shot down 2 zeros on 30 June 1943. The book isn’t showing a picture of the port fuselage then there is no proof of those marks assigning both victories to this ship. So trusting on my best guess I’ll put those two Japanese flags underneath the windscreen. I wanted to try Xtracrilix paints for the first time. I used FS15164 intermediate blue, FS17875 White for the upper surfaces. As a personal choice, the Tamiya XF-12 JN Grey for the lower surfaces. I missed the details of the cockpit construction, next one willbe fully detailed. Hope you will enjoy it: Pre-shading: First layer FS15164 Intermediate blue. Lower surfaces masked with blue tack. Some post-shading and faded panels to provide contrastand depth. Oil wash panel lines Now some pastels for the exhaust stains, more streaking different tones and shades, with my airbrush, before glossy sealing with Pledge floor wax. Stay tunned. Cheers!
  10. Ill do one of these too. And i actually made a quick start today airbrushing the cockpit and fuselage halves along with the pit assembly and decals. Oh and oops i assembled the wing and cemented the fuselage halves as well just a few mins ago. Fuselage meets wing.
