  1. After having my last 2 projects ending on The Shelf Of Semi-Doom, I was looking for something easy and quick. And it doesn't come more easy than the Eduard Bell X-1 ProfiPack, if you ignore the etched parts that is. Which I won`t. I don`t think there is any need to give a history lesson on the X-1. It was built to break the sound barrier, shaped like a 0.5" bullet since they knew those were stable in supersonic flight, and it did so in 1947. The Eduard kit is about 20 years old (I think?), and has few parts and pretty rudimentary detail so the addition of the photo etched harness and instrument panel(s) is very welcome: There are no added detail for the wheel wells, but it does come with 3 nicely detailed resin wheels: Since the X-1 is one of the most famous airplanes in history and was put in a museum in 1950, there is an incredible amount of online reference pictures for the cockpit and other details, with the notable exception of the wheel wells... So if anyone have any good pictures of the X-1 wheel wells I`d be happy to see them posted here, or a link provided. I`ll try my best to add some details to this kit, partly because I want to give this important aircraft the treatment it deserves, and partly because I have quickly grown fond of trying to scratch build stuff since I first tried it a couple of models ago. Where there are no details, any added detail is an improvement, right?
  2. i have had a liking for the Bell X-1 since watching The Right Stuff many years ago. It ss the early part of the film with Sam Shepard's extraordinary performance as Chuck Yeager that I most enjoy. A colleague, who knows of my model making habits, was kind enough to send me a portion of the "stash" of a a friend of his who passed away a year of so ago. Within that batch he sent me was Tamiya's 1:72 scale kit of the X-1 and I thought that it would make a good kit to start 2018 with. It was a very quick simple build (i decided against using the transparent fuselage halves). I used Italeri Acryl Acrylic Flat Orange as the main colour, applied by brush. A couple of firsts for me - I used an artists oil wash to highlight the moving surfaces and finished with Tamiya Semi Gloss Clear from a rattle can. Maybe a little grubbier than I intended, but the semi gloss finish is exactly what I wanted. I will be trying the Flat Clear on my next build. Build thread here. Thanks for looking. Within that batch he sent me was Tamiya's 1:72 scale kit of the X-1 and I thought that it would make a good kit to start 2018 with for my first WIP. So what do you get in the box? Some very nice plastic, with just a little flash. Included are transparent fuselage halves if you want to reveal the inner workings of the aircraft - not for me this time. The previous owner had got as far as painting a few parts, but other than that the kit was untouched. A small decal sheet. I of course will be finishing the kit in the markings for the record breaking flight. One reason for choosing this as my first kit of the year, I happen to have some orange paint in stock that looks just fine when brushed onto a spare bit of plastic. So to work. First thing was to glue in the cockpit panel - I am going to finish this "all buttoned up". In a good sign, it fitted really well. Next the main cockpit components (what little there is - I think this is going to be a fairly quick build). Tamiya provide a steel ball bearing as a weight, that needs to be encased in part of the internals of the aircraft. Next time - onto cockpit painting!

  5. Finished the iconic Bell X-1 Mach Buster a few weeks back and have only just got round to popping it up here. Learn’t a hell of a lot while building it. You know. That ‘Oh right’ just after the ‘Oh ****’ followed by a small paddy. So she’s not perfect. Not by a long shot. So I’ve used a few distraction techniques in the following. Like i said, had some issues along the way! Didn’t go with a primer, hey … it’ll be ok, right? Nope. Theres still an orange tinge to everything on my desk and while spraying the finishing coat(s) ended up with an orange peel finish in a few places, which you can see. Looks like skin ! And caused havoc with the wash. Which is a little heavy (under statement). Decals or should i say Pro Decals. Look great but wow, what a job they were to lay down without curling under on themselves and deforming at a touch. So much so the model was shelved for a bit. They scared me off … until i grew some. I broke both of the thingamabobs for wing tips while cleaning them up, so they’re missing. So in conclusion. Fought me all the way, some fit issues, CRAZY decals but such an iconic plane i had to share it with you. All comments and critique very, very welcome. Hope you enjoy the pictures.   6. To those (anybody?) eagerly awaiting the follow up to my earlier on of the British protoypes in January apologies for the delay. I got involved in designing a website for the local branch of a national charity. With that, the P1040 and spring finally appearing in the garden the follow-up took a back seat. Anyway I hope you like them but first a consumer warning. Some go back a long way - hopefully my modelling skills have advanced in the meanwhile John First the Americans Douglas D558-I Skystreak Anigrand resin, not the best of kits. Tail surfaces were very inaccurate and replaced by scratch built items Douglas D558-II Skyrocket Anigrand resin, not terribly impressed with this kit either. A pity as it was one of my favourite a/c. One of my model club members recently produced the Hobbyboss version and it looked ‘right’ whereas mine doesn’t Bell X-1 Hobbycraft kit – awful decals and I didn’t dare attempt to paint the canopy! Lockheed F94C Starfire Emhar kit. I think that there is something not quite right about the nose of this kit. A pity as I used to think that this was a most impressive a/c and I really wanted to model it. Douglas Skyray - No it is not the prototype but it was one of the many weird and wonderful efforts of the US Navy in the fifties that culminated in the Phantom. Tamiya kit - Why can't everybody produce well moulded kits like this? Convair XFY-1 KP kit. Quite a nice but heavy panel lines and undersize decals North American F107 Trumpeter kit. This went together with little trouble except around the intake but for some reason I had dreadful trouble with the paint job. Don't look too closely (Oh yes you will won't you!) Then a grandchild broke the nose probe! I wish all Trumpeter kits were this good. McDonnell Douglas F15 Hasegawa kit. Went together well but kit was old when I got it and the decals were a nightmare to separate from the backing sheet This seems to be a problem with old Hasegawa kits Lockheed YF22 Dragon kit. Some problems with sink marks but otherwise OK Northrop/McDonnell Douglas YF23 Italieri kit General Dynamics F16 XL Monogram. One of my most recent completions. The rear fuselage does not have the uptilt of the a/c. I also suspect the a/c wing may not be as simple as the one in the kit. I was unable to find anything to verify this. And now some Russians Yak 23 A simple KP kit. I didn’t know it was a prototype until recently I found a picture of it in the book ‘Early Soviet Jet Fighters’ Mig 1-44 Zvezda kit. First time I have made one of their kits and it went together well. Only real problem was that the colour scheme had the upper and lower colours reversed Su 37 Revell kit. Went together fairly well with a few issues with the fit on the front fuselage and around the intakes. It wasn’t clear (to me anyway) from the instructions how the boundary layer bleeds fitted and of course I got it wrong and had to correct it. And finally a French one SO Trident II Mach II kit.
