  1. In the 1970’s and 80’s, the Spanish flag carrier Iberia had a fleet of some fifty DC-9 aircraft. As a 14-year-old plane spotter in 1969, I snapped a picture of the company’s DC-9-32 during a visit with my dad to the Copenhagen Kastrup Airport. The plane was registered EC-BIS and christened "Ciudad de Alicante". In a sudden nostalgic plane spotter mood I decided to build a model of that very plane. I ordered a 1/144 scale Fly Models kit, which was pretty simple but in my opinion all the essential details were there. The model went easily together although some sanding and putty was needed. For the old Iberia livery I ordered a high-quality sheet from the BOA, which contained the registrations and names for 24 different Iberian DC-9’s including the EC-BIS. I also used Authentic Airliners Decals decals for the cockpit and cabin windows. The dark gray cabin windows were printed in the cheat line of the BOA decal but since I wanted a more authentic look and decided to attach the AD decals on top of them. The windows were exactly of the same size but the distance between them was just slightly different so I had to cut out each window from the AD sheet and stick the 70 windows in place one by one. An entire day was spent in that job! I painted the white areas of the plane with Tamiya Fine surface primer, which I coated with Tamiya gloss varnish spray TS 13. I used Alclad's white aluminum on the wings, stabilizers and the lower part of the fuselage. The edges of the wings and stabilizers were sprayed with Alclad's polished aluminum. I also used Humbrol and Vallejo colors for the smaller details. I also scratched several details into the machine, e.g. pitot tubes, beacon lights, antennas, etc. In the summer of 1969 I made a round trip of the Scandinavian capitals with my dad. In Copenhagen I insisted that we visit the kerosene smelling Kastrup airport instead of seeing the Little mermaid statue or the Tivoli theme park. Well, my dad wasn't at all amused but after all we did go to the nice and busy airport where I could snap a picture of the Iberia DC-9-32 🙂
  2. Ilyushin IL-62 is probably one of the most successful Soviet built intercontinental airliners. The plane carried max. 186 passengers to a max. distance of 10.000 km. Its maiden flight took place in January 1963 and a total of 292 planes were built during the years. Its main operator were Aeroflot and it was also the biggest plane used by Interflug, the East German state airline. The company operated a total of 24 planes. IL-62 was also widely used by many other Soviet block airlines. Ilyushin IL-62's were in use until the early 2000 but because of stricter noise regulations and new and more economical plane types they went almost totally out of commercial traffic. The only airline still using the plane for domestic tourist flights are Air Koryo of North Korea. I built the Interflug IL-62M from a Zvezda 1/144 kit with BOA decals I ordered from the web. I also used a photoetch set from Extratech. The Zvezda kit was of very high quality, very detailed and its fit was excellent. I primed the fuselage with white Tamiya Fine Surface primer which I then sprayed with Tamiya rattle can gloss varnish. The lower part of the fuselage, the wings and stabs were painted with Xtracolor X137 light gull grey. For the smaller details, wheels, lights, etc. I used Humbrol enamels and Vallejo acrylics.
  3. OK jumping in like a few others to this airliner GB with a fine Russian airliner. Thought about the Zvezda IL62 and the wonderful LU Tarom decals, then the Zvezda Tu-134 or AZ IL-18, but finally plumped for the Amodel Tu-104A! Here's the box and sprue shots etc Box art and transparencies Wing sprue Fuselage and kit decals Tail sprue Close up The BOA decals and scheme Suprisingly big airliner I thought even in 144 scale, although the box could have been half the size! The recessed panel lines might be a bit heavy and some are a bit wonky as eveidenced by the close up pic! Decided not to use the kit decals as I dont think they have a good reputation. so BOA decals purchased. I have done no research on the kit itself, I just like the airliner with its glass nose, but I can see straight away that I will have to fill in the windows and some of the scribed window postions, as these will be dealt with by the decals. Anyway looking forward to getting underway (do you really need to start another kit says the missus!) and hopefully if this is finished within the deadline I can do another - plenty airliner kits and ideas!!
  4. Here's my entry. Fly DC-9-32 and Iberia old livery decals from BOA. This is quite exciting because it's my first airliner ever and I haven't attempted NMF since the cold war.
