  1. Hello everybody In full knowledge that there are plenty of these Arma 1:72 Hurricanes milling about I wanted to add my own humble contribution. Its from the Mk. 1 Expert Set in the kit scheme of Josef Frantisek of 303 Squadron. I finished it last week and am posting now because we are at the 80th Anniversary of the formal establishment of 303 Squadron and completely co-incidentally, as I was applying the last touches, the Historic Aircraft Collection were kind enough to also reveal the public certification flight of a 1:1 scale edition ;-) from Duxford. In terms of the kit, I found the cockpit very well detailed but a very tight fit - much fettling was required to get the wing installed. The wing root was very good but due to user error the leading edge wing to fuselage join needed a little filler. Nonetheless, I was pleased with the end result with much thanks to Bruno from the Dakota club here in Flanders for helping out with a spare u/c strut to replace the one consumed by the Carpet Monster (in addition to the PE rear view mirror after I had spent a good thirty minutes making the glass out of kitchen foil). Oh, and I hand made the navigation lights from clear sprue only to discover I could have used those on provided by Arma all along! Oh well. It was painted with a mix of Vallejo, Tamiya and Lifecolour paints, with Ammo of MiG weathering powders and pencils and W&N oil paints. Overall very enjoyable but I'd probably do the junior set as the trade-off of PE versus visibility for the cockpit is not necessarily valuable for my purpose (i.e. to go on my shelf at the office). On reflection I think the panel line wash on the upper surfaces of the wings is a bit Over The Top (vertical surfaces are more muted) and also the chipping on the gun panels but I'm quite happy how the interior and exhausts worked out in the end... As usual, errors and omissions are my own but as a long time lurker here on BM I would like to say how very grateful I am to all those who have posted their Arma Hurricane builds & experiences already (e.g. @Procopius, @CedB, amongst others) and those with seemingly boundless Hurricane knowledge, especially @Troy Smith all of which I found very helpful indeed!
  2. "Certain that their target was London, Park was no longer intercepting as far forward as he used to...He would hit them hardest at the point the Germans called 'die grosse Angstkurve uber London' ('the dreaded big turn over London)...Park had given his young braves height and surprise...As his forward units engaged, Park ordered up his own reserve, his Praetorian Guard of 602 and 303..." - Stephen Bungay, The Most Dangerous Enemy My plan is to build a Polish 303 Sqn Hurricane from the new 1/72 Arma kit, and 602 Sqn Spitfire from the already venerable 1/72 Airfix kit (probably the two most popular kits in this Group Build, so I don't get points for originality). I've got some 303 references all ready to go: And have thrown a little primer on the kit interiors. First up the Hurricane: And next the Spitfire: It's actually the Mk Va boxing, but contains everything needed for a Mk I.
  3. I've been wanting to do this triple build for a while now and I'm glad it's complete (my fourth Spitfire triple since December!), but it may be time to go back to single builds. All three are 1/72 Spitfire V's representing 'A', 'B' and 'C' wing versions, all belonging to 303 (Polish) Sqn. The build was part of the Spitfire Group Build dedicated to the memory of Edgar Brooks, and the build thread can be found here. First up, a Spitfire VA from the 1/72 Airfix Mk I/IIA kit reperesenting K9871, RF-P, flown by Boleslaw Gladych on 8 Dec 1941, where he, alongside Mieczyslaw Adamek, protected a downed Spitfire pilot over the English Channel. K9871 was built as a Mk I, but was modified into a Mk V and assigned to 303 Sqn in late 1941. I built one of Gladych's P-47's in that STGB, and I thought it would be nice to build one of his Spitfires. I've not been able to find any photographs of this aircraft as a 303 Mk V, only as a Mk I, so I had to apply 'typical' squadron markings from that period. Next to Gladych's P-47. Next up is Spitfire VB, BL670, RF-K, from the new 1/72 KP kit. This Spitfire was assigned to S/L Wojciech Kolaczkowski, who commanded 303 Sqn from Nov 1941 until May 1942, and had his name "Wojtek" painted on the nose, as well as the name "Krysia" formed with the individual squadron letter on the fuselage. Last up is Spitfire VC, AB174, RF-Q, from the 1/72 Sword kit. This aircraft was the mount of PO Antoni Glowacki, a Battle of Britain 'ace in a day'. The individual squadron letter, 'Q' formed the word "QQWCA" on the fuselage side, apparently meaning 'cuckoo' in a transliterated Polish/English pun! All three together.
  4. I started this AZ Spitfire IX as a way to jump start a difficult build in the P-38 STGB, and it brought the required good luck. Now it's finished and ready for inspection. I had to scrounge together decals from the kit, aftermarket, and home made in order to depict BS451, RF-M, "Joan" of 303 (Polish) Sqn. The "Joan" was written on the fuselage with a white-ink pen and betrays my poor handwriting abilities. Many profiles of this aircraft show the "Joan" as very small 'block' letters, but the only photo I could find shows it in a flourished cursive script, so that is what I attempted. Here she is next to two other 303 Spitfires in a growing collection. I managed to place the roundels over the walkway stencils this time. Baby steps.
  5. I've been busy trying to get the bench cleared up for this one, the modelling event of the year. I've become an admirer of the Polish 303 'Kosciuszko' Squadron over the past year or two, and I figure this GB is a great opportunity to honor them. I'm planning on building the new tool Airfix kit as L2099, RF-O, one of two 303 fabric winged Hurricanes I've managed to find (the other is L1696). It was used by Walery Zak, Josef Frantisek, Athol Forbes, Marian Belc and Witold Lokuciewski (and that's just the pilots I could find in various sources) to claim victories throughout September and October of 1940. The second Hurricane will be converted to a metal wing following Tony O'Toole's (tonyot) example. I'm still not sure which specific 303 aircraft it will be though.
  6. Here is my attempt at an AZ 1/72 Spitfire IIB. It is the first short run kit I've started, but the fourth I've finished (managed a few short run P-40's first for the Group Build). It represents the 303 Sqn aircraft of FO Miroslaw Feric (P8385, RF-A) in the summer of 1941, although four different pilots, including Feric, made claims while flying it according to Wojtek Matusiak's 303 Squadron history. The prop and spinner come from the Airfix Mk I/IIA kit, and the rear view mirror and antenna mast were scratched from plasticard. The build thread is here. My cheap camera and lack of photography experience led me to try a hodgepodge of backgrounds, so please bear with me. The reference photos showed a plane that looked like it had been across the Channel a few times, and I tried to capture that weathered look. Here it is next to a 303 Sqn Mk IIA from the Airfix kit. I can say that I've started a Kosciuszko 'collection' now that there are two of them. Thank for looking, any and all Spitfire advice is welcome.
