  1. Well, I know this subject was quite popular last time but having recently got some decals from Ray at 26Decals to replace those that came with the kit (which were poorly printed) this will be my first foray into this year's GB. Photos taken by me at Ringway on 23 Aug 1966, presumably it was on the Manchester - Prestwick - New York route. I'm aiming to build at least two aircraft but have to get my From Russia with Love entry done before too much will be done in this GB. Regards Mike
  2. Announcing the arrival of Linhas Aereas de Angola (TAAG) Boeing 777-300er from Luanda : Zvezda's Boeing 777-300er finished off in one of my favourite colour schemes with the help of 26decals. The model was an absolute delight to build in spite of its size - so much so that I've bought another to cut down into a 777-200 at some stage. Engine detail was excellent as can be seen from the head-on and close-up : 26decals lived up to expectations - simple to use, even with what must be one of the longest cheat-lines I've ever assembled. Portuguese titles on the port side : with the English version on starboard : Standard 4 x 4 walk-around : and the obligatory "with something else" shot - Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 720 : Time to head off to the hangar in the loft : Obrigado por olhar (Thanks for looking) mike
  3. Greetings all, This is the Welsh Models 1/144 MD-11 vacform with Delta Airlines late 1990's livery laser decals by 26decals. Build thread here. Relatively straightforward, though the build up of the wing mounted engines from bits of vacform and resin was tedious and slow work. Because the decals are laser printed on clear film, the Delta writing on the centre engine is clear and results in a very large blue decal to wrap around the centre engine. My first attempt didn't go well, so a huge thanks to Ray at 26decals for supplying a replacement set. Paints were my usual Zero Paints white primer, Zero brilliant white top coat and various Alclad shades. Clear coating with Alclad Aqua Gloss with a wide flat brush. Despite not turning out quite as good as I hoped, it certainly looks the part alongside my Delta TriStar. I just need a decent DC-10 kit - Authentic Airliners have been out of stock for months now... On with the photos. Regards, Darren
  4. Season's Greetings Folks, Disappointing year really, lots of models started, few completed. This is the Revell 1/144 Airbus A380 with TwoSix Qantas Airways decals. It was built for an Australian colleague after they saw the Air New Zealand B787-9 built for a Kiwi colleague. May be it was me, but this kit fought all the way and practically refused to be built. First the wing dihedral was completely off, still cannot understand why, the end result being that the wings drooped so much the engines touched the ground. I ended up cutting hacking chord wise slots in the upper wing surface (two per side) and manipulating the wing angle section by section until the engine clearance look reasonable. Queue lots of filling and sanding of about a third of each wing's surface area, oh may be half dozen times until I was satisfied. And then a full rescribe of the upper wing surface. Things were so bad I contemplated starting again and bought a second kit. Not sure I have the will to endure this again... Enough ranting you get the picture. Other corrections were the body gear doors, shortening the length of the wing gear legs (so the body gear no longer hang in the breeze), and filling lots of fuselage sink marks. Paints were Halford's own Plastic White Primer, and Gloss Appliance White, first time used straight from the can due to the sheer size of this model. Fed up with Xtracolour Airbus Grey I tried the Revell Aqua 50/50 Blend of 371/374, which looks good, but some reason it turned into an unsprayable gloop in my airbrush even with Revell's own thinner. So I reverted to Xtracrylix ADC Grey for a pale grey, which is too warm a grey, but will have to do. And Xtracrylix Neutral Grey for the corroguard. Plus various Alclad shades for the engines. Kit decals worked well, even the wing walk markings, but why the spinner spirals are printed yellow is a mystery. 26Decals were incredible as always, exceptionally thin, very tolerant and snuggled down nicely with MicroSet and Sol. The final annoyance was that the damn thing doesn't fit in my photo studio, compromising the photos! Best regards, Darren
  5. Hi Everyone Thought it was time to get some serious modelling done for this GB. I'm going to make a 1/144 Revell Airbus380, finished in British Airways livery using 26Decals for the BA specific parts. Obligatory box / state of play shot: The windows were filled-in in advance of the GB to leave enough time for shrinkage effects to show. Although there is still some minor finishing needed, most of the windows are quite good: Having recently flown on the "baby" of the fleet, this will be finished as G-XLEL. Mike
  6. Hi guys, I've bitten the bullet as I'm pretty confident I'm going to finish my Yak-6M for the other GB so I'm getting on board with this one too. I have a few Tu-154's up in the loft and I've been itching to build one for some time, so this is the perfect excuse. Will be finished using 26Decals as Balkan Airlines, LZ-BTW.
  7. De Havilland Comet 4c - 1:144 Airfix (Updated pictures) Dan Air - 26 decals [Edit] New pictures as I had forgotten a few final details on the model. Added this morning are nav lights, aerials, aeriel line from fin tip, taiplane black tips, and some panel lining/weathering. [/edit] The Comet is one of the most beautiful airliners ever. In the 4c version with extended wings and pinion tanks it looked at its very best. To further emphasise its beauty and pure shape I wanted to model it in flight without the clutter of undercarriage. The idea of doing a 4c was inspired by Phil 'Vulcanicity's lovely model in BOAC colours. Phil used 1:72 drop tanks from the Airfix Vampire for the pinion tanks, so I nicked his idea! It's appropriate too, from one DH aircraft to another! Decals are from Two-six, and as usual are top quality, settling down beautifully. I used the cockpit decal here, although I normally prefer to kit the kits clear glazing, but there was no hope with the tiny, ill fitting part supplied with this old kit. I used one from my stash, remember this bit of nostalgia from the 1980's? The decals were yellowed and curled though, so I'm glad that Ray at two-six sells a far superior set for the 4b and 4c. This is the major part of the conversion. Extended wing tips, and slots cut for the pinion tanks which were also shortened by cutting a section from the middle. Starboard side mostly complete, port side in rough format. Thanks for looking, John
  8. I've been on a bit of a go-slow with my model building recently, so I'm pleased to finally announce the arrival of Flight ET720 from Addis Ababa : This is my take on Roden's Boeing 720B kit - warts and all - but finished off with Ethiopian Airlines markings from 26Decals (Sheet 144-615). and here it is with a friend from Abidjan Thanks for looking. Time to head off back to Addis. Regards mike
  9. Well, my long term relationship with the DC-8 family has finally come to an end with my Zambia Airways DC-8-71. (Special thanks to Keefr22 for letting me have the engines on the never-return basis - now I've just got to convince him to let me have his unwanted C-17 on the same loan scheme .) Markings came from 26Decals sheet 144-145. and here's the whole "Famn Damily" built over the last year and a half : (Apologies for the quality of the photos - seasonal disorder struck big time with the lighting !) Thanks for looking. mike
  10. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Ruben Husberg can consider himself to be well and truly flattered ! http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/18440-air-afrique-dc-8-63-1144/?hl=afrique I've always liked Air Afrique's colour scheme and Ruben's build in 2008 was an absolute corker - so much so, that I hadn't actually planned on trying to build my own. Thankfully, a right stuff up with the paintwork on my original Zambia Airways DC-8 lead me to a tough decision - either bin the kit or strip the paintwork down to the plastic and have another go with a different scheme....! Stripping the paint won the day (although it was a close call), so here's my take on TU-TCF : Air Afrique's DC-8-63F (1/144 kit by MInicraft and decals by 26Decals) As for the Zambia Airways DC-8, well I ended up buying another kit anyway, and as my comparison shot, here's a "Tale of Two Tails............" (I'm hoping the Zambian 8 will land in RFI in the next week or two.) Thanks for looking. mike
  11. Posting this little beauty on behalf of Ray at 26 Decals. Apart from the original Airfix kit and the rather dubious offering from an east European company, the only other way to add an injection moulded 737-200 to your 1/144 collection is to back-date a later version of the 737 Classics. The later -300 and -400 have been produced in kit form by both Minicraft and Daco, with the latter also providing us with -500. We are now able to build all of the Classic 737's although some surgery will be required to produce the original -100 series. The Airfix 737-200 (recently reissued with two new livery options) is getting a bit long in the tooth and although it can be turned into fine model as we have seen on several occasions within the civil pages of the forum. Backdating one of the later versions of the ubiquitous B737 will provide us with a more up to date model of the -200 series without resorting to vac-form or resin kits. In this instance, the superb Daco 737-300 kit fuselage has been shortened both in front of and behind the wing and the fillet ahead of the fin has been modified to curved -200 type. Wings have been altered to accept the rather special JT8D produced in resin by Authentic Airliners. Apart from a slight reduction in wing and tail span, very little else is required to the basic Daco kit. The picture below shows the modified kit prior to priming. Decals are from 26DECALS. The completed model in British Airways livery. Thanks to Ray for allowing me to share this model with you. Chris.
