  1. USMC Harrier AV-8B, pics thanks to member "Fights On" taken on board USS MAKIN ISLAND LHA-8.
  2. Hey guys, just an update on one of my latest builds. An Airfix Harrier GR1 in Norwegian winter camo colours. I've only seen a painting of a GR1 in winter camo and a small grainy picture on an Xtradecal sheet. It's not finished yet. I used the normal dark sea grey and green combo, then applied some maskol over the green then white washed over the green. The majority of the Harriers that I've seen in this colour scheme were GR3's - their whitewash in tatters. Still have to do the decaling (does anyone know if they would remark the stencil data on over the white wash? If you could let me know I'd be massively grateful!) I'm going to paint the roundels on, the dark blue of the roundel would look out of place I think, then just sticking the landing gear and rocket pods on! The Airfix kit is pretty good, very good at it's price point. The panel lines are crisp and it has good wheel well and cockpit detail. My only complaint about the kit is the edges of some parts are a little over rounded. So this leads to some nasty joins, namely the nose cone and the... thing sticking out the very back I have no idea what it's called. I'm reasonably happy with how it's turning out, only thing is that I made a harness out of greenstuff two part putty, I must have crushed it and not noticed, then it dried. It sort of looks like the pilot would have been held into his seat my an enormous sausage link. What do you's think? Anyone got any experience in snowy GR1's? Cheers!
  3. OK - here we go! I've chosen an oldie for this 1) I've always wanted to build it, 2) I had it in the 'stash'! I plan on doing it as simple as I can. Allthough I have some aftermarket stuff: Pavla Intake and Exhaust and Pavla Wing Pylons, I'm not sure that I'm going to use them. I also have some rocketpods left over from an Academy Hawker Hunter and Xtra Decal X48107. Here are the 'Genesis' pictures: And here's the one I want to build: I'll start with the cockpit, but allready there I have a question: Is Monogram's seat the correct one for a RAF Harrier or is it a US Marines seat? Can anyone enlighten me? Cheers Hans J
  4. Hi all, I'm currently working on the Airfix 1/72 Harrier GR.1 and I have a question about the airbrake positioning when the aircraft is in normal flight (i.e. not hovering about). I know that the airbrake overlaps the surrounding panels when retracted and the Airfix kit has two different actuators to pose it fully or partly open but I want to model it in full high speed flight so my question is how retracted did it go, did it sit as flush as it could to the fuselage or is the smaller Airfix actuator used to show it fully retracted? I've searched google but all the photos that I could find that show the airbrake in flight show the aircraft hovering (which is fair enough, it was fairly unique at pulling off that party trick). Any Harrier experts about who could help? Thanks. Dan
  5. Hi folks, here is the AIrfix Harrier I was given. Dressed it up with some Pavla intakes, some scratch / scrap resin added to wheel bays and Pigsty gave me a seat. Build Thread... Enjoy.
  6. Does anyone know of a source of 1/72 Italian Navy AV-8B decals, I know MF and Tauro did sheets but I can't find any of these anywhere. Are there any alternate sources?
  7. Hello all and a Happy New Year! It's that time of year again and I always enjoy putting up a Yearbook of my latest models (though not so much Photobucket being terribly slow and crashing multiple times). Despite having a fairly busy year including moving to a new full time 9-5 office job since May, I have still found time to do plenty of models as usual That's what weekends are truly for! I've had three main themes running this year mostly; WW2 Luftwaffe, Cold War Soviet and WW2 and Post War RAF, but there's the odd other thing in there too. Now, my lists are saying I've completed a stupidly huge 124 models this year, but as I have to sell most of them to make space for more, here's a photogenic list of what's left starting from January... 9. BAe Harrier Gr Mk. 7/9 1:72 Revell Developed from the prototype Hawker Siddeley P.1127, which flew for the first time over fifty years ago, the vertical take-off Harrier has become one of the most famous post-war jet aircraft of all. Awarded what some would say is the ultimate accolade for a non-US designed aircraft – a purchase order from the United States Government – the first generation Harrier was successful enough to merit the development of a second generation. Despite a slightly troubled development, during which Hawker Siddeley pulled out of the joint Ango-American project in 1975, only to rejoin again (as British Aerospace) in 1981, the resulting aircraft was a quantum leap in terms of capability compared to the original design. The second generation of Harriers, to which the GR7 and GR9 belong, feature a larger wing, more powerful engine and extensive use of lightweight composite materials throughout the airframe. The GR9 boasts a wide range of improvements to avionics and weapon systems compared to the GR7. The aircraft has seen extensive combat service and both the GR7 and GR9 have been employed over Afghanistan as part of Operation Herrick. It’s no secret that Revell’s Harrier GR Mk. 7/9 is actually Hasegawa’s GR Mk. 7/9 in a blue box. Revell must like the Japanese manufacturer’s take on the Harrier as this is at least the second time that they have released it in their own box. They also released the 1:48 version a few years ago too. The kit is comprised of 91 parts, moulded in the familiar glossy grey plastic used by Hasegawa. Despite having been around the block once or twice, the moulds are clearly in excellent condition and there is no trace of flash anywhere. The panel lines which make up the surface detail are very fine and clear. This is one area where the kit has the edge over the newer Airfix version. Whilst the panel lines on the Airfix kit are pretty tidy, these are just that bit more refined. The cockpit is pretty typical of other Hasegawa kits in this scale. The overall shape looks good, but there is no raised detail to represent the instruments or controls on the instrument panel or side consoles. Decals are provided instead. If you want something a little more convincing, then aftermarket resin or photo etched parts will be the way to go. The ejection seat provided is actually for the AV-8B rather than the GR7/9, so it is closer to the American UPC/Stencel seat than the Martin Baker Mk.12. As the seats provided in kits in this scale are usually only rough approximations of the real thing though, it’s not exactly a deal breaker. Other interior detail includes the intake trunking and turbofan blades, both of which are moulded in a single part and so will require careful painting. The auxiliary intake doors are moulded with the upper three in the open (or dropped) position, which is a boon for those of us who model their aircraft with the landing gear down. The front jet exhaust nozzles are moulded in two halves, which will create a troublesome seam to clean up. The rear nozzles are moulded in one piece, but are solid, with no real attempt made to create any impression of depth. I’m not sure which approach is better, but this is one area of the kit where I really would recommend some resin replacements. To be fair to Revell (or Hasegawa), this tends to be a problem area for all small-scale Harriers. The nozzles are designed to rotate too, thanks to rotating joints which fit inside the fuselage. The other major parts of the aircraft, including the nose, wings and horizontal stabilisers are all very nicely recreated. The nose in particular is bob-on. The Leading Edge Root Extensions (LERX) that are characteristic of second generation Harriers are the earlier 65% type, which means that if you don’t plan on using the kit decals, you will need to check to see if the aircraft you plan to build had the 65% or 100% versions fitted. If it’s the 100% versions, then there are a couple of aftermarket options available to you. The undercarriage is all quite nice, although in-flight versions of the wing-mounted stabilisers aren’t provided. The nose gear wheel is moulded in one piece with the leg, which is a pet hate of mine, but I guess it makes the whole set up a bit stronger. Hasegawa blow hot an cold with their ordnance. Some kits have very little whilst others have a veritable surfeit. Unfortunately this kit falls into the former camp. Aside from the option of gun pods or strakes for the under-fuselage position, you are provided with a couple of drop tanks and a pair of AIM-9 Sidewinders. If you want a full load of stores then you’ll need to rob the more generously appointed Airfix kit or the spares box. The canopy is thin and clear, but owing to the horseshoe profile, it has a mould seam running down the centre. This should be fairly easy to remove with a nail buffer or similar tool though. The MDC is moulded in place on the inside of the canopy. A decal is also provided for this feature, but the carrier film is quite large, so I personally would avoid using it. Two options are provided for on the decal sheet: GR.9 ZG858, flown by Wing Commander Simon Jessett of No. IV Squadron, Joint Force Harrier, RAF Cottesmore during the Harrier retirement flypast on 15 December 2010; and GR.7 ZD404 “Lucy” of 1 (F) Squadron, depicted at Kandahar Air Base, Afghanistan, 2007. As usual, the decals are superbly printed but they do look a little matt. I would recommend applying them over a gloss surface and using a decal solution. The decal sheet is amazingly comprehensive and includes decals for the ordnance, undercarriage and even the individual numbers for the Rolls Royce Pegasus compressor blades. Conclusion Most modellers considering a Harrier GR.7 or GR.9 in 1:72 face a straight choice between this kit and the Airfix alternative. The Airfix kit holds quite a few aces in terms of ordnance, cockpit detail and optional extras (closed auxiliary doors, in-flight undercarriage, 100% LERX), but this kit is still well worth a look. Although it is slightly simpler, it has finer surface detail and will build up into a very handsome model. Revell’s boxing is also good value when compared to the later Hasegawa boxings. Recommended. Revell model kits are available from all good toy and model retailers. For further information visit
  10. Earlier this year it was suggested at my Model Club that we should take part in a 'Secret Santa' type, blind kit swap. The idea was to get us to build a subject that we would not normally consider. All participants wrapped up and donated a kit into a pile, from which then we all took one at random to build. Imagine my 'delight', when I drew a 1/72 Heritage Aviation Harrier T.4! Those of you familiar with this kit will know that it is a fairly poorly cast resin and white metal product that is not for the faint hearted. The rules of the swap allowed us to use aftermarket additions, but I resisted the temptation to replace as many bits as possible and limited my expenditure to a Combat Decals 'British Test & Development Aircraft' decal pack (which is brilliant), and a Master brass pitot tube (brilliant also). Here's what I ended up with after a couple of months' hard graft. I've made a couple of blunders (apologies to those who notice), but I have to say that it does at least look nice and colourful . Cheers Cliff
  11. Right-oh. Having a bit of fun, (of course modelling is always fun) but got given this kit and fancied jazzing it up without too much expense or hassle. 1983 Airfix Sea Harrier. Bought a eduard etch set for the Kinetic kit and some Pavla intakes. An aero-club white metal seat kindly donated by Pigsty. So I set forth, first step. Drill out the camera port and polish up a bit of clear sprue. Then looked at my references and noticed that the nose gear doors and airbrake are open on the ground. So the kit needed some detail adding. I have a set of F-4J electronic bays of which I only plan to use one of for a forthcoming Phantom build... Guess what? They are the same width as a Harrier nose gear door. The bad news is it does not leave enough room to put the gear in, but it at least looks more 'aircrafty' inside.
  12. Dave, I can't PM you - inbox full?. Dave/Nick I'm calling on your Harrier knowledge please. I'm doing a 1/32 Revell GR.1 but as one of the DB aircraft. The kit has 8 intake doors but research says that this may have changed. Do you know if the DB a/c would have had 8 doors (or more) although they look smaller on photos, than production items, I'm going to do xv276 in silver with a little primer on it as per one of the photos in a reference book. Steve.
  13. Morning all, I picked this kit up as a break from the Revell A400M that i've got on the bench. For the first time I am relatively pleased with this attempt, having built two SHARs, one GR3 and one GR9 over the course of the last 2 years. It is also the first time where I am content with the level of post-shading (although I did have to clean up the upper wing surface when i forgot to dilute the wash that I use for the postshading and my airbrush started spraying out this fountain of black- reducing the effectiveness of the finish somewhat! ) Kit: Airfix 1:72 BAe Harrier GR7A/GR9A (from LMS -Mike's Models) Paints: Vallejo Black, Light grey, Medium sea grey, White, Medium olive Alclad II Aluminium -And a variety of mixed Vallejo paints for smaller details Other: Alclad II Aqua gloss Vallejo "Model Wash" Dark grey -for panel lines and post-shading Thanks for looking Kind regards, Sam
  14. Harrier Harvest, I was going to go with Harrier Hernia but that doesn't sound quite so exciting! Here is another booby type build followed on from here; http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234964850-wip-booby-harrier-gr3-airfix-172/?view=findpost&p=1694841 This time BOOBS is an abbreviation of Built Out Of Boxed Sets. Airfix harrier Gr1 x3 Airfix Harrier Gr3 Italeri Harrier Gr3 Hasegawa Av8-a Eduard zoom etch for Gr1 x2 and for Gr3 x1, Master models pitots for Gr1x3 and for Gr3x1, Pavla seats for Av8a x2, Pavla Aden gun pods for harriers x2, attack squadron Mk 77 napalm bombs for US aircraft x6 Caracel decals early Av8a sheet all in 1/72 scale. I'm just waiting on a few books (thank you Mr H.Lime for the clue) then I'm going to begin "Operation Vertical" One thing I've learned about model kits, if you find one you like get many before eBay put the price up! Secretly I'm hoping revell release the Hunter Mk6 again. What I'm after is help to make (within the limits of my skill and scale permitting) accurate harriers of Gr1/3 and Av8a types, I'm starting with the American versions as I don't yet have seats for the RAF examples. Any help appreciated for any type under construction (everything in the picture is under construction!) Some builds will be quicker with less effort! Please be patient. . . .
  15. Afternoon Fellow modellers Here is the new Airfix Harrier GR3 with Pavla nozzles and Eduard PE. The decals are from Xtradecal and the Houchin starter from Flightpath Do you remember when back in the 1970s we saw the Harrier GR3 as one of our most fearsome ground attack aircraft? They would pop out from the woods and take off from a road. Not sure in that era of dumb munitions whether they really would have been all that effective? Andrew
  16. For newer 2nd generation Harrier see out thread here. GR.3 XZ997 at The RAF Museum Hendon, pics mine. Rolls Royce Pegasus Engine
  17. Have just completed this build for the NATO 80's Group Build. I used the new 1/72 Airfix GR3, Eduard zoom, Freightdogs corrected fin & Pavla gun pods. All brush painted using good ol Humbrol enamels & weathered with Ammo Black night panel wash & Tamiya weathering sets. The base board is a small plank of wood covered in modelling clay, painted with Hum 29 & Tamiya browns and weathered with Revell mud green powder. This is what I was aiming for And this is what I managed May I introduce Sqn Ldr Tes Tickle rolling in on the range Thanks for looking, as always C&C's welcomed.
  18. Just grabbing my place, I have a plan & its ambitious for me. Anyway that's enough of a teaser, I still have to finish a Pegasus engine for the Made in Great Britain GB, then a 1/144 Wessex in the Helicopter GB & a Hunter for that GB (still waiting on a kit). So not much to do.
  19. Also doing an old 1/72 Harrier GR5 from Airfix - same as the later GR7 kit, it has about 3 different nose options! First of the Harrier II 'Big Wing' versions, allowing a larger payload. Again, raised lines, basic kit, but its there in the stash and just makes the 1980's as it replaced the GR3's in 1989..... Got some modeldecal 100 decals with a choice of ,1 Sqn, 233 OCU, SAOEU and 3 (Fighter) Sqn - with RAFG in mind I think it will be 3 (F) Sqn as it convertedto GR5 in May 1989.... Oooops....
  20. For first Generation Harriers see our other thread here. Harrier GR5, pics thanks to Tony (sniperUK)
  21. Think it's a Mk.4 of some variation but they seem to differ quite a bit. Suggestions?
  22. Good morning! This build was one that I had wanted to do for quite a while, so my LMS had one in stock the other day so I thought it would be silly not to get it This bulid also marks the end of my AS exams (culminating with Chemistry on Friday) and "liberation" from schoolwork for at least two or three months...... Kit used: Airfix 1:72 Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR3 Paints used: Vallejo "Model Air"- Barley Grey, Medium Olive, Fire Red, Black and "Metal Color" Duraluminium. The nozzles, heat-shield and gear legs were painted with Alclad Aluminium. Vallejo "Model Wash" Dark Grey was used as a general wash and also sprayed in my first attempt at post-shading. Decals: The kit decals were perfect, with no splitting at all and no excess decal film being visible once applied. Edit: Thanks to Airfix for supplying me with a missing half of a cannon-pod! Thanks for having a look! Many thanks, Sam
  23. Evening all, I just picked up a 1:72 new-tool airfix harrier gr3, only problem is that i'm missing one half of the second gun-pack. I'm thinking of fitting the recce pod on the centre pylon anyway but the question is: I think that the gun packs were usually fitted (as i've seen in all photos of the gun-pack equipped harriers) in pairs but were there instances where only one was fitted? Many thanks, Sam
  24. One Airfix Harrier finished to my usual standards! The kit gave three options for finish and I went for the GR9A so I could display the sniper pods and paveways... although I nearly went for the GR7A as I wanted to put the Lucy Pinder pin-up decal on! Although the kit went together well for the most part, I had some difficulties with the seams between the wings and fuselage on the top of the kit which took a lot of filling and sanding! I'm also not overly happy with the exhaust nozzles and if I had the chance I would re-do these. I'm limited to Tamiya paints due to local supply and I had a nightmare mixing the colours for the lighter shades but after several re-coats I'm happy with the finish. I tried some new techniques on this such as adding my own seat belts, experimenting with lighter shades picked out with the airbrush on the main colours, plus oil washes and matt varnishes. Also used translucent colours on the clear parts for nav lights. Comments welcomed and enjoy!
  25. Hi Harriervites, I've been contemplating the load out options for Harrier GR7 and later, by reading through books and anything I can find online - which not too surprisingly often points me to topics on Britmodeller where people have tended to ask "Is this loadout OK for this Harrier during Operation X?" However, this "research" has made me realise that the options seem to be primarily role based, with the combat roles being: Close Air Support Air Interdiction Reconnaissance The non-combat scenarios seem to be: Ferrying Flight testing Development Air display Despite my lack of professional knowledge and experience, I thought I would stick my neck out and try to list the various options I have seen/heard talked about and invite correction and clarification from the pros/ex-pros/gifted amateurs who seem to frequent this site: Ref Role Name 1 2 L o/r 3 L Str 4 R Str 5 R o/r 6 7 1 CAS GCAS? Is it? I've tried to put a name to each loadout but I have no idea whether or not this bears any relationship to how they are actually referenced - or indeed if there is any such thing as a standard name. If anyone can clarify this aspect (or even properly define the term "store"!!) I'd be very grateful. I suspect I've got myself in a pickle with the whole Paveway thing. I seem to remember Merv posting (maybe even on one of my referenced links) that the Paveway number was about the guidance system not the size of explosive carried. Feel free to correct me. There are a few roles that I've come across and stuck in the table but am very unsure about. E.g. did the Combat Air Patrol role that the FA.2 used to perform ever get covered by JFH? If I understand correctly, an FA2 would have worn AMRAAMS and guns for this role - none of which for obvious reasons are in the GR7/9's arsenal. Included are some apparently intended GR.9 capabilities that never saw operational clearance, such as Storm Shadow, which may have been fitted to or flown on the development aircraft. In such cases I've assumed that the pods are camera pods and that any missiles fitted are likely to be brightly coloured test versions. Dunno. Phimat? Anyone? Anyway, I hope this turn out to be useful to others.
