  1. Dave, I can't PM you - inbox full?. Dave/Nick I'm calling on your Harrier knowledge please. I'm doing a 1/32 Revell GR.1 but as one of the DB aircraft. The kit has 8 intake doors but research says that this may have changed. Do you know if the DB a/c would have had 8 doors (or more) although they look smaller on photos, than production items, I'm going to do xv276 in silver with a little primer on it as per one of the photos in a reference book. Steve.
  2. Morning all, I picked this kit up as a break from the Revell A400M that i've got on the bench. For the first time I am relatively pleased with this attempt, having built two SHARs, one GR3 and one GR9 over the course of the last 2 years. It is also the first time where I am content with the level of post-shading (although I did have to clean up the upper wing surface when i forgot to dilute the wash that I use for the postshading and my airbrush started spraying out this fountain of black- reducing the effectiveness of the finish somewhat! ) Kit: Airfix 1:72 BAe Harrier GR7A/GR9A (from LMS -Mike's Models) Paints: Vallejo Black, Light grey, Medium sea grey, White, Medium olive Alclad II Aluminium -And a variety of mixed Vallejo paints for smaller details Other: Alclad II Aqua gloss Vallejo "Model Wash" Dark grey -for panel lines and post-shading Thanks for looking Kind regards, Sam
  3. Have just completed this build for the NATO 80's Group Build. I used the new 1/72 Airfix GR3, Eduard zoom, Freightdogs corrected fin & Pavla gun pods. All brush painted using good ol Humbrol enamels & weathered with Ammo Black night panel wash & Tamiya weathering sets. The base board is a small plank of wood covered in modelling clay, painted with Hum 29 & Tamiya browns and weathered with Revell mud green powder. This is what I was aiming for And this is what I managed May I introduce Sqn Ldr Tes Tickle rolling in on the range Thanks for looking, as always C&C's welcomed.
  4. Afternoon Fellow modellers Here is the new Airfix Harrier GR3 with Pavla nozzles and Eduard PE. The decals are from Xtradecal and the Houchin starter from Flightpath Do you remember when back in the 1970s we saw the Harrier GR3 as one of our most fearsome ground attack aircraft? They would pop out from the woods and take off from a road. Not sure in that era of dumb munitions whether they really would have been all that effective? Andrew
  5. For first Generation Harriers see our other thread here. Harrier GR5, pics thanks to Tony (sniperUK)
  6. Good morning! This build was one that I had wanted to do for quite a while, so my LMS had one in stock the other day so I thought it would be silly not to get it This bulid also marks the end of my AS exams (culminating with Chemistry on Friday) and "liberation" from schoolwork for at least two or three months...... Kit used: Airfix 1:72 Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR3 Paints used: Vallejo "Model Air"- Barley Grey, Medium Olive, Fire Red, Black and "Metal Color" Duraluminium. The nozzles, heat-shield and gear legs were painted with Alclad Aluminium. Vallejo "Model Wash" Dark Grey was used as a general wash and also sprayed in my first attempt at post-shading. Decals: The kit decals were perfect, with no splitting at all and no excess decal film being visible once applied. Edit: Thanks to Airfix for supplying me with a missing half of a cannon-pod! Thanks for having a look! Many thanks, Sam
  7. Think it's a Mk.4 of some variation but they seem to differ quite a bit. Suggestions?
  8. Evening all, I just picked up a 1:72 new-tool airfix harrier gr3, only problem is that i'm missing one half of the second gun-pack. I'm thinking of fitting the recce pod on the centre pylon anyway but the question is: I think that the gun packs were usually fitted (as i've seen in all photos of the gun-pack equipped harriers) in pairs but were there instances where only one was fitted? Many thanks, Sam
  9. Hi Harriervites, I've been contemplating the load out options for Harrier GR7 and later, by reading through books and anything I can find online - which not too surprisingly often points me to topics on Britmodeller where people have tended to ask "Is this loadout OK for this Harrier during Operation X?" However, this "research" has made me realise that the options seem to be primarily role based, with the combat roles being: Close Air Support Air Interdiction Reconnaissance The non-combat scenarios seem to be: Ferrying Flight testing Development Air display Despite my lack of professional knowledge and experience, I thought I would stick my neck out and try to list the various options I have seen/heard talked about and invite correction and clarification from the pros/ex-pros/gifted amateurs who seem to frequent this site: Ref Role Name 1 2 L o/r 3 L Str 4 R Str 5 R o/r 6 7 1 CAS GCAS? Is it? I've tried to put a name to each loadout but I have no idea whether or not this bears any relationship to how they are actually referenced - or indeed if there is any such thing as a standard name. If anyone can clarify this aspect (or even properly define the term "store"!!) I'd be very grateful. I suspect I've got myself in a pickle with the whole Paveway thing. I seem to remember Merv posting (maybe even on one of my referenced links) that the Paveway number was about the guidance system not the size of explosive carried. Feel free to correct me. There are a few roles that I've come across and stuck in the table but am very unsure about. E.g. did the Combat Air Patrol role that the FA.2 used to perform ever get covered by JFH? If I understand correctly, an FA2 would have worn AMRAAMS and guns for this role - none of which for obvious reasons are in the GR7/9's arsenal. Included are some apparently intended GR.9 capabilities that never saw operational clearance, such as Storm Shadow, which may have been fitted to or flown on the development aircraft. In such cases I've assumed that the pods are camera pods and that any missiles fitted are likely to be brightly coloured test versions. Dunno. Phimat? Anyone? Anyway, I hope this turn out to be useful to others. 10. One Airfix Harrier finished to my usual standards! The kit gave three options for finish and I went for the GR9A so I could display the sniper pods and paveways... although I nearly went for the GR7A as I wanted to put the Lucy Pinder pin-up decal on! Although the kit went together well for the most part, I had some difficulties with the seams between the wings and fuselage on the top of the kit which took a lot of filling and sanding! I'm also not overly happy with the exhaust nozzles and if I had the chance I would re-do these. I'm limited to Tamiya paints due to local supply and I had a nightmare mixing the colours for the lighter shades but after several re-coats I'm happy with the finish. I tried some new techniques on this such as adding my own seat belts, experimenting with lighter shades picked out with the airbrush on the main colours, plus oil washes and matt varnishes. Also used translucent colours on the clear parts for nav lights. Comments welcomed and enjoy!
  11. It was a strong rumour, now confirmed by R. Chung, the Kinetic boss himself, in ARC forums. After the Sea Harrier FRS.1 (link) & FA.2 (link), the two seat Harrier T.2/T.4/T.8 (link), Kinetic is quite logically to produce 1/48th Hawker Siddeley/BAe Harrier GR.1/GR.3 kits. So time to open a dedicated thread, I think. Source: http://www.arcforums.com/forums/air/index.php?showtopic=287539&view=findpost&p=2798826 V.P.
  12. Also doing an old 1/72 Harrier GR5 from Airfix - same as the later GR7 kit, it has about 3 different nose options! First of the Harrier II 'Big Wing' versions, allowing a larger payload. Again, raised lines, basic kit, but its there in the stash and just makes the 1980's as it replaced the GR3's in 1989..... Got some modeldecal 100 decals with a choice of ,1 Sqn, 233 OCU, SAOEU and 3 (Fighter) Sqn - with RAFG in mind I think it will be 3 (F) Sqn as it convertedto GR5 in May 1989.... Oooops....
  13. As with many people I'm not allowed chocolate, so for Easter I got a different type of egg: As with the best Easter eggs you get stuff inside: So construction started with painting the inside, the engine baffles, and the seat black: When the paint was dry, the two baffles were glued in and the two halves glued together sandwiching the seat between them: The seam was filled with Mr Surfacer 500 and rubbed down, and then the wings were added: I have come to the conclusion this won't be a very long WIP! This is as far as I have come so far, so it's decision time for the paint scheme. With the probe being on the nose I rather fancy a Sea Harrier in Medium Sea Grey. Or should I stick to one of the box schemes and go two tone camoflaugue?
  14. Just grabbing my place, I have a plan & its ambitious for me. Anyway that's enough of a teaser, I still have to finish a Pegasus engine for the Made in Great Britain GB, then a 1/144 Wessex in the Helicopter GB & a Hunter for that GB (still waiting on a kit). So not much to do.
  15. After the Sea Harrier FRS.1 (http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234990951-sea-harrier-frs1-148/) and FA.2 (http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234968544-sea-harrier-fa2-148/) Kinetic is to release a 1/48th BAe Harrier T.2/T.4/T.8 kit - ref. 16. This Harrier T-bird was built mostly oob from the Sword T.4/4N kit. The model depicts the Harrier early in its service with IN. Note the unusual configuration with 330 gal ferry tanks.(sourced from an old Airfix GR.3 kit) Being a short run kit, it was rough and needed a lot of putty and patience. Some parts and instructions were non-existent. I had to scratch build a few bits just to make it representative of the right mark. On the upside, the kit is peppered with goodies like an Eduard PE fret and resin airbrake interiors. The kit definitely seemed 'inspired' by the ESCI/Italeri single seater from tell tale similarities in parts; not that it's a bad thing. Decals used are from the Model Alliance, but this exact scheme isn't in the sheet. It represents IN651 much later in its life and one needs to be creative with available options to get to this. This was perhaps my most detailed jet to date but I ran out of patience in the end. I am happy with the way it looks in the end but I wish I had handled some silvered decals earlier. Hope you guys like it and let me know what you think.
  17. Hi all, I finished this late last year but not had chance to photograph it yet. This model is a true Britmodeller team effort as various parts for the conversion were suppled by fellow members. Its probably not 100% accurate but close enough for me. The parts for the conversion were as follows: Resin nose & console custom cast by Sean Resin seat from somewhere (can remember!) 65% Lerex suppled by Saints Phil Additional pylons on outriggers scratch built from plasticard! Decals by Skymodels Thanks to Sean & Phil for the above parts, hope you like it!! Apologies for the poor photos :-( I realise now I should have painted the back of the tanks dark green!

  19. Good afternoon folks, this thing is making we crazy. Working with a model mate on a couple of Harriers that flown the last farewell formation 5 years ago. I'm talking about ZD379 and ZD433, a couple of highly patched jump-jets. Could you please help us finding the best GUNZE matches for the following colors? Dark Sea Grey Medium Sea Grey Camouflage Grey Dark Camouflage Grey Any help will be highly appreciated. Thanks a lot Simon
  20. Here is my latest build - the little 1/72 ESCI AV-8A Matador. Obviously this kit has now been superceded by the new Airfix offering, but I picked this up at the October Yeovilton show for very little money and decided to go straight in and build it. In the box it looks lovely, with very fine engraved lines on old fashioned silver-grey styrene. Putting it together is another matter however, and a fair bit of putty was needed due to the very poor fit of the major components. However, once it's together, the shape looks fine. The decals were really tricky with some silvering, and the roundels on the fuselage didn't want to go around the intake contour despite copious amounts of microsol. In the end I had to use a tiny bit of glue to the top and bottom to get them to stay. I built this OOB apart from adding some little seat belts out of paper and used Humbrol and Xtracolour enamels, with pastel weathering and staining.
  21. Hello! One and a half year ago I started a Harrier GR.3, but I never got round to finish it. I think it's time to do so now! Main reason is that I want to paint something, and since my Tiffie is still in the detailing stages the urge to shoot some paint around is big. But first, a recap of what's been done so far! Here's what I'll use for this build (i have another GR.3 that will be decked out with more AM stuff) Yes, that's a replacement fin from Freightdog. 2mm too short height for the Airfix one, and not something i'd be bothered fix by myself. I started with the bits that goes bang, and promptly raided the other kit for its rockets. They probably never flew during the exercise with all four pods, but it just looks cooler this way. That means that my second kit will have a recon pod and a Sidewinder, together with some fueltanks, but that will not happen this year. The Gunpods benefited from drilling and opening of some holes. And why not drill out the fuel dumping pipe as well? After much fussing with how to paint the intake I found this thread http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234947602-another-one-for-the-harrier-gr1-experts/, And promptly painted one of the green, that other grey. Well, my guess after reading BM for too long is the the rocket pods at this time probably were mostly unpainted, maybe like this, Keeping with the loud stuff, here's the bang seat: Four plastic parts, and two small stencils. Turned out nice enough closed 'hood! Cockpit complete The next one will have a Zoom set, to spice it up further! Added the nose without the extra warts, since that equipment wasn't installed at that time. (Falklands only?) The fin was installed, and fitted perfectly, except for a tiny air bubble which was filled. Eagleeyed spotters can see that the elevator isn't installed. I reasoned that with grey undersides the masking job will be very tricky to solve, and cut the onepiece affair in two. There's a huge gap on the underside of the main wing though :-( Plastic shims to the rescue! Looks quite ok. The gunpods have a big gap too, but i plan to fill that with all kind of dirt and goo. There's no such thing as clean gunpods, i'm sure, especially on the underside of an british fighter! After that, the underside was cleaned up, and sprayed Light Aircraft Gray (Xtracrylix) Now, the plan is to winterize this one, more or less like RAF did it. That means, normal cammo colors on, gloss coat, decals, more glosscoat, hairspray and white, add scratches with a toothbrush or similar, and then seal it with a final flat coat? What could possibly go wrong? Just to be sure, i experimented on an old MiG-21 fin. Dark green with Alclad Aqua gloss. Then, Hairspray and Tamiya white. One hard brush and some water later: This could actually work, I think! And that was the start. Let see how it goes in the coming weeks //Christer
  22. I'm building one of the new Airfix AV-8As, and the camouflage pattern carries over to the underside of the wing. The wing leading edge is no trouble to mask, but the wingtip is. There is no convenient panel line to follow, and winging it freehand (sorry) is bound to end in tears. Then the flash of inspiration: Get some 8mm Tamiya tape and put it on the underside of the wing lined up with the outboard outrigger fairing on one edge- Leave some excess on the wing trailing edge. Trim the excess tape from the wingtip. Use the trailing edge excess as a tab to peel the tape off gently. Reapply the tape inboard of the edge of the wingtip, checking against the outrigger fairing to make sure it is straight. The masking follows the curve of the wing and has a regular spacing from the edge of the wing. Finish masking the rest of the wing and paint away. A useful tip, or stating the obvious? It works for me at least, and I hope it does for you too.
  23. So I was in Westfield Shepherd's Bush and saw the modelzone corner in WH Smiths which I had forgotten was there! Needless to say I went in, had a look, and got the new tool AV8 which I had been intending to get around to building, being a big harrier fan. I liked the look of the Spanish scheme so ended up doing that. I used Tamiya XF-55 Deck Tan for the upper side and XF-2 Flat White for the underside. I brush painted using the thin paint-large brush-lots of coats method and I think it turned out OK. I went for a clean job to bring out the transfers which I thought were rather nice!
  24. First RFI for ages from me, in fact I finished this kit a while ago but not built much since, I did this as a post-war Falklands based Harrier as I wanted to arm it up with some Aims, think it looks quite mean with these. Aftermarket bits included resin seat, intakes and outer wheels to spruce up the old kit! Anyway, here she is...
