  1. Time to stake my place in this GB with kinetic's excellent new 1/48 2 seat Harrier. I don't need to give much of an introduction to this kit as there have already been some great reviews and builds here on Britmodeller so you will already know that it is a very nice kit indeed so no doubt any problems or mistakes will be my own. Here is the ubiquitous box top shot; And the sprues all tightly packed inside and still sealed; The options available from the kit; And the very comprehensive decal sheet; As you can see there are markings for every operator of first gen Harriers on there and pretty much any one built can be made from it, which is good as as per usual I will not be sticking to an out of the box example and want to do something a bit different and having a liking for winter camo schemes have found this; Now if I can find a picture or serial number of one of the T4's which went with 1 squadron on one of there Norway deployments and received a proper wrap around job I will build that one instead. And here are some of the references I will be using; Hope to make a start on Saturday so hopefully won't be too long before the next update. Thanks for looking in. Craig.
  2. BAe Harrier GR.7 No.1 Squadron - Royal Air Force - Bardufoss Air Station (Ex. Snow Falcon) 2004 1/48 Revell With the vast majority of recent RAF aircraft adorning not so attractive grey on grey schemes, non standard schemes tend to catch the eye. Whilst going through my Dad's images from the early 2000's there are a number of images of white winter camo Jaguar's, Tornados and a few Harriers. Cue a project that I am glad to say I am one model into, recreate a series of winter deployment camo aircraft! The first of which comes from Revell's rebox of the Hasegawa GR7/9 kit. Marked as a 1 Squadron aircraft from the final Harrier deployment to Bardufoss, Norway for Exercise Snow Falcon '04 the aircraft has been finished in the state a lot of my reference shots show during the deployment. Decals were provided by the Model Alliance "Harriers: The First Ten Years" 48-102 and the cockpit was replaced with the Aires GR7 cockpit, annoyingly the canopy fogged a little whilst trying to attach it and so the interior is somewhat obscured, but I am going to play it off as it's cold in Norway and the canopy has glazed over a little Onto the images; Thanks for looking and expect a WIP for the next RAF Winter camouflaged jet at some point, but I'm yet to decide on Jaguar, Tornado or Buccaneer! Nick
  3. After a year when I have really struggled to find time for modelling, I have definitely been busy over the Christmas break! These are both based on the old ESCI model (still IMHO the best 1/72 Harriers), using both decal options from one box (one of these kits came as a dirty bag of bits without decals, but fortunately with all its parts!). First up, an AV-8A of the US Marines: And then a Matador - Toro, toro, see you tomorrow my son! When you can't decide what to build, build a Harrier, then build another for luck - Happy New Year all! FredT
  4. Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year to you all. I would like to share my last build of the bench with Kinetics new 2 seat Harrier. There is a little bit of a story around this kit so to keep it brief the kit arrived on the 14th October and work started immediately with a deadline for the kit to be on display at Telford just four weeks later. For those eagle eyed modellers amongst you it was on the IPMS Lancashire club display at SMW. Cant go into too much detail as the build will be in print. But a much improved build than their two Sea Harriers and a first in 1/48th scale injection moulded plastic. A thoroughly enjoyable built any one who thought NMFs were difficult than they should try gloss black! All out the box with Tamiya gloss black and Eduard RBF tags. Thanks for looking Rick G
  5. 2017 wasn't quite as profilic as I had hoped, but putting out 3 kits this year is actually a huge lot more than I'm used to , so it isn't all that bad! First up was the good old Monogram 1/48 Harrier in the '70 Nato vs Warzaw pact GB: Next up was the good old Hobbycraft 1/72 DeHavilland Canada Caribou in the DeHavilland GB: and last up was the not so old, but still good Dragon 1/72 Mercury rocket in the Prototype and X-planes GB: Merry X-Mas to all from snowcovered Kolt in Denmark Hans J
  6. Hi folk's last entry(probably) will be the re-vamped Sea Harrier as I believe Matchbox tinkered with the mold from the original,I built the hi viz original but not this boxing as I lost interest in jet's many moons ago, another seven quid special from King Kit should arrive soon. This is the boxing I've ordered.

  8. Hi all, Kit manufacture: Airfix Scale: 1/72 Type: Hawker Siddeley Harrier Gr.1 Extras used: Totally OOB Paints and colours used: Mr Hobby Aqueous H330/H331/H332 for the Dark Green, Dark Seagray, Light Aircraft Grey camo. Vallejo Metal Color Magnesium for exhausts, Tamiya and Vallejo acrylics elsewhere. Weathered with Flory Dark Dirt and Grime, and oil paints. All sealed with Aqua Gloss. Long time no see! To be honest with you, I got a bit disheartened by the photoshop thing so have been out of forums for a while. But, I've got a new photo setup and I'm back in! This is one I have just finished for a SiG on another forums. This is my first inflight model and whilst I've never been too into them, I have to say I love how she looks in the air, so will definitely be doing more airborne jets! The kit, other than a few fit issues in the wheel wells that didn't affect this build, is great. Falls together! I think the surface detail looks good and, although slightly overdone for 1/72, is more than acceptable. Here's the pics: That's about it. Thank you for stopping by! As always, comments, criticism and advice is always welcomed! Val
  9. With the hawk awaiting a full bottle of primer to arrive, and a week of annual leave in hand, it's time to get a second aircraft onto the bench. The Hawk was an OOB build to get me by, but this Harrier has a few extras to test me and so I can learn a few things as I go. I've gone with the Eduard rebox of what I believe is the Hasegawa Harrier. I've picked up some Brassin and Eduard accessories as you can see, They include a THERMA poem Sniper ATP, UK RBF tags and a step ladder. Although I'm left wondering if the UK use(d) ladders like this? The set comes with Cartograf decals for the following 6 designs: As well as the standard array of sprues: It also comes with a correct resin seat, to frames of photo-etch parts (one in full colour), new wheels and a sheet of pre cut masks. Cheers James
  10. I planning on making a 1:72 Hawker Siddeley Harrier T bird conversion, and am after some accurate measurements, can anyone help? Thought of adapting some drawings using the AV-8A cross sections (http://aviationarchives.blogspot.co.uk/2016/04/av-8a-cross-sections-and-loft-lines.html) I have the following, any comments on which you think is the best: A.A.P. Lloyd: Aero Modeller, August 1969 Scale Models, November 1973 [I notice Spencer Pollard used these for his lovely 1:24] Modelling Manual: Hawker Siddeley Harrier Gr.1/3 AV-8A, Koku-Fan ,December 1981 Mike Keep: Roger Chesneau - Aeroguide 12: Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR Mk3 / T Mk 4, 1989 Denis J. Calvert - Aircract Illustrated Special: Harrier, Ian Allan, 1990 Krzysztof M. Zurek: Aero Technika Lotnicza, April 1991 [Nice detail appears to be based on A.A.P. Lloyd] Nils Mathisrud: Andy Evans - BAE/McDonnell Douglas Harrier, Crowood, 1998 Richard J. Caruana: Marcus Herbote - British Harriers Part 1, AirDOC, 2008 Tim McLelland - Harrier, Classic, 2011 [Incorect details in places] Juanita Franzi: Aeroplane, March 2011 Peter Scott: Model Aircraft, May 2014 [Looks iffy to me]
  11. Time for a new build. This time I was looking for a quick easy build. So something new, without the need to rescribe, and an easy paint job. A quick delve into the stash and I came up with this. I've already built the Airfix FS1 Gr1, Gr3 and Gr9 versions, so this will be a nice addition. I also love the way these kits go together so it should be an easy build with very little filling and sanding. I'm going to build it as option A on the Airfix colour sheet. This is is a Harrier XZ457 from the Hermes battle group during the Falklands war. It should look well in my cabinet next to the other 4.
  12. USMC Harrier AV-8B, pics thanks to member "Fights On" taken on board USS MAKIN ISLAND LHA-8.
  13. Hi guys Just got hold of a Monogram GR1/AV-8A in 1/48. Obviously the kit doesn't contain either drop tanks or SNEB pods. I don't have an Airfix GR3 donor kit to rob from. Have trawled t'internet, but can only find 190 gallon drop tank in resin As i want to build an early spec GR1, does anyone have supplier that can supply the 100 gallon tanks or know of another aircraft with aftermark tanks that can be kit bashed? Cheers guys

Hi guys. I'm an ex RAF techie of 25 years standing. Two tours on Harriers, started on Mod 9s, into GR1s and then GR3s as an INAS avionics tech at Wittering (3yrs) and Gutersloh (4yrs). I did do some GR5 introduction into service work as part of the Central Servicing Development Establishment's Flight Systems Specialist Flight. Short tour on Canberras (100 Sqn) followed by a tour on Victor K2s (57 Sqn) including Falklands War (Multiple Black Buck see off crews).
  15. Hi all, I'm currently working on the Airfix 1/72 Harrier GR.1 and I have a question about the airbrake positioning when the aircraft is in normal flight (i.e. not hovering about). I know that the airbrake overlaps the surrounding panels when retracted and the Airfix kit has two different actuators to pose it fully or partly open but I want to model it in full high speed flight so my question is how retracted did it go, did it sit as flush as it could to the fuselage or is the smaller Airfix actuator used to show it fully retracted? I've searched google but all the photos that I could find that show the airbrake in flight show the aircraft hovering (which is fair enough, it was fairly unique at pulling off that party trick). Any Harrier experts about who could help? Thanks. Dan
  16. I've had that Sea Harrier done for ages, and something about it always struck me as off.....but I couldn't tell what. NOW I see I've got the roundels on the nose, not the intakes! ((Picard face-palm royale))
  17. Hi folks, here is the AIrfix Harrier I was given. Dressed it up with some Pavla intakes, some scratch / scrap resin added to wheel bays and Pigsty gave me a seat. Build Thread... Enjoy.
  18. Hello All! I'm jumping in (pun intended) with the Airfix 1/72 Harrier Gr1. I've got the Eduard PE set for it and I'll use as much of that as seems practical, mainly for gussying up the cockpit, using the kit decals. Have the Warpaint book for reference, but I think I'll mainly be using the internets especially the Harrier SIG. My recent record for group builds has been a bit hit and miss so here's hoping I have time to complete this one!
  19. OK - here we go! I've chosen an oldie for this 1) I've always wanted to build it, 2) I had it in the 'stash'! I plan on doing it as simple as I can. Allthough I have some aftermarket stuff: Pavla Intake and Exhaust and Pavla Wing Pylons, I'm not sure that I'm going to use them. I also have some rocketpods left over from an Academy Hawker Hunter and Xtra Decal X48107. Here are the 'Genesis' pictures: And here's the one I want to build: I'll start with the cockpit, but allready there I have a question: Is Monogram's seat the correct one for a RAF Harrier or is it a US Marines seat? Can anyone enlighten me? Cheers Hans J
  20. Hey guys, just an update on one of my latest builds. An Airfix Harrier GR1 in Norwegian winter camo colours. I've only seen a painting of a GR1 in winter camo and a small grainy picture on an Xtradecal sheet. It's not finished yet. I used the normal dark sea grey and green combo, then applied some maskol over the green then white washed over the green. The majority of the Harriers that I've seen in this colour scheme were GR3's - their whitewash in tatters. Still have to do the decaling (does anyone know if they would remark the stencil data on over the white wash? If you could let me know I'd be massively grateful!) I'm going to paint the roundels on, the dark blue of the roundel would look out of place I think, then just sticking the landing gear and rocket pods on! The Airfix kit is pretty good, very good at it's price point. The panel lines are crisp and it has good wheel well and cockpit detail. My only complaint about the kit is the edges of some parts are a little over rounded. So this leads to some nasty joins, namely the nose cone and the... thing sticking out the very back I have no idea what it's called. I'm reasonably happy with how it's turning out, only thing is that I made a harness out of greenstuff two part putty, I must have crushed it and not noticed, then it dried. It sort of looks like the pilot would have been held into his seat my an enormous sausage link. What do you's think? Anyone got any experience in snowy GR1's? Cheers!
  21. Hi everyone ! This is my build http://news.hobby.net.ua/forum/index.php?showtopic=11793 Thank you for your help !
  22. Does anyone know of a source of 1/72 Italian Navy AV-8B decals, I know MF and Tauro did sheets but I can't find any of these anywhere. Are there any alternate sources?
  23. Hello all and a Happy New Year! It's that time of year again and I always enjoy putting up a Yearbook of my latest models (though not so much Photobucket being terribly slow and crashing multiple times). Despite having a fairly busy year including moving to a new full time 9-5 office job since May, I have still found time to do plenty of models as usual That's what weekends are truly for! I've had three main themes running this year mostly; WW2 Luftwaffe, Cold War Soviet and WW2 and Post War RAF, but there's the odd other thing in there too. Now, my lists are saying I've completed a stupidly huge 124 models this year, but as I have to sell most of them to make space for more, here's a photogenic list of what's left starting from January... 24. Earlier this year it was suggested at my Model Club that we should take part in a 'Secret Santa' type, blind kit swap. The idea was to get us to build a subject that we would not normally consider. All participants wrapped up and donated a kit into a pile, from which then we all took one at random to build. Imagine my 'delight', when I drew a 1/72 Heritage Aviation Harrier T.4! Those of you familiar with this kit will know that it is a fairly poorly cast resin and white metal product that is not for the faint hearted. The rules of the swap allowed us to use aftermarket additions, but I resisted the temptation to replace as many bits as possible and limited my expenditure to a Combat Decals 'British Test & Development Aircraft' decal pack (which is brilliant), and a Master brass pitot tube (brilliant also). Here's what I ended up with after a couple of months' hard graft. I've made a couple of blunders (apologies to those who notice), but I have to say that it does at least look nice and colourful . Cheers Cliff
  25. Right-oh. Having a bit of fun, (of course modelling is always fun) but got given this kit and fancied jazzing it up without too much expense or hassle. 1983 Airfix Sea Harrier. Bought a eduard etch set for the Kinetic kit and some Pavla intakes. An aero-club white metal seat kindly donated by Pigsty. So I set forth, first step. Drill out the camera port and polish up a bit of clear sprue. Then looked at my references and noticed that the nose gear doors and airbrake are open on the ground. So the kit needed some detail adding. I have a set of F-4J electronic bays of which I only plan to use one of for a forthcoming Phantom build... Guess what? They are the same width as a Harrier nose gear door. The bad news is it does not leave enough room to put the gear in, but it at least looks more 'aircrafty' inside.
