  1. Hello All, This is the Trumpeter 1/48 DH Hornet F3. OOB with the exception of Barracuda Wheels I won't dwell what Trumpeter did wrong as enough has been said already. Sort of looks like a DH Hornet anyways. Given that I build almost exclusively in 1/144 scale with the odd exception it was a real challenge to do a "supersized" kit. Pics via Iphone 4 so the quality is sort of rubbish, apologies... don't own a decent camera anymore. Oh, by the way, Xtradecals were also used on the kit depicting a 64 Sqdn Aircraft during exercise dagger 1948 I think. Thanks for looking and happy modelling all. Happy to answer questions. Ian
  2. Hi Guys. Welcome to my next build, The De Havilland Vampire T.11 1/72 scale by Airfix. I fell in love with this jet when I saw Phil Lewis building one a few moths back. 1/72 has never been my thing but I had so much fun building My FW 109 I got hooked. My last build was 1/48 and Im toying with the idea of going bigger next time but for now I'm going back to the gentleman's scale. Any way without further waffle I will begin. I hope (if you decide to come along for the ride) you enjoy this as much as I will. Here is the obligatory box shot. And here are the assorted sprues and decals. It is a really nice looking kit, The mould is wonderful, I'm so loving Airfix right now. . I and going to be doing this here scheme as it is different from Phil's and I'm a sucker for day glo. Also the shiny silver will be a new one for me. I start off by sticking the first few bits of cockpit together. Nice and easy. The detail is really quite nice except from a few raised pin marks which I'll sand down but you'll never see it when the tubs in. I wanted to get some nice belts to match some reference pics I found. Mmmmmm blue. I decided to get some Eduard PE belts, Cheap as chips and they look really nice. First up was shooting the seats black. then the inside of the pit, I used a small amount of Vallejo steel to dry brush too. And that's where we are. It's all going rather well at the moment. I'm mostly planning an out of the box build with only a few little additions. We will see. Thanks for looking. Take care y'all and happy modelling. Johnny boy.
  3. Greetings fellow modellers, I'd like to share the results of the first of several 1:72 Vampire builds. I'll be sharing the others when they're completed. I posted a short Work in Progress here on how I did the lowered flaps and brakes. There's not a lot about the kit I can tell that's not already said multiple times. I think it's a nice kit - I found the build fairly relaxing and didn't get many surprises in regards to fit and such. The kit is quite accurate, though in my opinion suffers from rather deep and wide engraved panel lines. The kit was built OOB except for Pavla main wheels and Albion Alloy tubing for the pitot tube. The decals were sourced from all kinds of places - the kit decal sheet, the Xtradecal Foreign Operator sheet, an Xtradecal sheet for Lightning F.3s and some other tiny bits (like a small yellow arrow pointing at the windscreen) from whatever I could find. I built the Vampire up as a T.11 in later Rodesian service. It says 'T.55' in my work in progress, as I'd initially planned to do one of the ex-SAAF Vampires acquired from South Africa in 1972 to beef up the aging fleet, but I decided to go for an 'original' instead for reasons that frankly now escape me. The T.11s like the model depicts were delivered in 1955 and as far as I'm aware came relatively fresh from the factory. This example is finished in the last colours it flew in before written off on September 1973, namely in early Bush War camouflage and Rhodesian republic markings. The T.11s wore no national markings on the wings; boom roundels and fin flashes only. I threw some weathering at it to simulate the effects of a warm climate and hot sun beating down on the wing surfaces. Two-seat Vampires were often waxed in Rhodesia, so I tried to replicate that too - the aircraft looked very glossy at times, though for the scale effect I tried to tone that down towards a satin sheen. Hope you like. Jay

  7. Ok, I know I'm a latecomer to this but I'll try to get at least one build done in time I've chosen the Airfix 1/72 DH Vampire T.11. Made a quick start cleaning up some mould seams with parts still on the sprue and a base coat of Tamiya Rubber Black on the relevant areas (interior etc.) I reckon a drybrush of Nato Black should pop the detail out.
  8. Hello glue-sniffers and ABS addicts. This thread is a split from http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234999580-airfix-vampire-t11-x-2/ Images are spoiler tagged for ease of page loading. If you have any issues with the photos, blame RobG. If you have any issues with the model, don't blame me. If you would like a custom-built version for your mantelpiece then dream on. I haven't built a model for probably 18 years, so I began with a pre-emptive strike on the box.

  10. Hi, Last year, very soon after I'd started three Gnats (which have been completed - seen here and here), I thought to speed things along by starting another three - Vampires this time. Of course things seldom work out exactly as planned, and now, some time later, I've decided it's for the best to leave the production line workflow for what it is and build no more than two models at the same time. I have now caught up the Vampire build, leave one for later, and concentrate on two; the first a Swiss T.55, and the other a Rhodesian T.35. Construction wasn't anything special - I added bits and bobs to enliven the cockpit somewhat - but the real challenge came recently when starting on the wings. I had planned from the outset to lower the flaps. Upon closer inspection, I came to the conclusion that adding extended wing spoilers I thought I'd share the progress from that moment onwards. Firstly I cut out the flap and spoiler area from the wing (inboard flap was cut out previously) CIMG0228 CIMG0230 Some plasticard CIMG0231 Cut to fit CIMG0232 Glued and used Gunze Mr dissolved putty as filler... CIMG0225 ...then sanded, used Surfacer 1000, sanded again, again a bit of Surfacer, sanding, et voilá. CIMG0238 Now for the wing spoilers. I got out a strip of fairly thick Evergreen and sanded one side into an edge. CIMG0241 glued another bit to it - this process speaks for itself I believe: IMG_1255 Evergreen plastic paper-like sheet: IMG_1258 IMG_1264 Finally I sanded the spoiler into the appropriate shape and then I glued the thin sheet around it with Tamiya Cement. (Revell contacta, another glue I use often, is far too aggressive for thin plastic.) IMG_1262 IMG_1265 To be continued. Thanks for looking Jay

  12. Prototype de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito. This is serial W4050 but the fuselage was replaced by that of W4051 in 1940 following a taxing accident. Now on display and being restored by The de Havilland Heritage Centre. Pic mine. A couple of pre restoration photos, again mine.
  13. Afternoon All, I recently acquired the Aeroclub 1/72 De Havilland Venom FB1 and FB4 kits with the intention of building them as RAF machines from 249 (FB1) and 28 (FB4) Sqdns. I'm looking to see if anyone has some decent cockpit interior images so I can add some detail to the cockpit interiors? Anything you can provide me with would be gratefully received! Thanks in advance, Mark.

  15. Hi Everyone, I've just completed a project to build 5 Chipmunks, in each of the liveries offered by Airfix over the years. Airfix have released a few more than I built, but the ones I've chosen not to build are duplicate schemes with ones that I have. The intention with this project was not to add too much detail or refinement, but to build them as Airfix intended. I did add instrument panels and harnesses though, although they are difficult to see through the canopy. I managed to keep my hands off the rivets until the last one, when I just had to refine them. I hope you like it. Cheers Tony

  19. Just a quick build of the great Starter Kit from Airfix of the de Havilland Vampire T.11, Royal New Zealand Air Force No.14 Squadron. Used the seatbelts and 'D' rings from the Eduard etch set. Alclad and Vallejo paints. Thanks for looking Kirk

  21. This was my entry to the Tiger Moth GB back in the summer of 2015. I didn't manage to finish it in the time frame of the GB and it has been untouched since. I'll try to finish it now. Thanks for looking. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Hello, As if I didn't have enough ongoing builds, I decided to participate in this GB. I will be building Airfix's 1/72 Tiger Moth in RAF Flight Training School colours, 1940. Here are the kit, sprues and decals: IMAG2533 Here's the camouflage scheme: IMAG2535 The kit is nicely detailed out of the box but I will add Eduard's PE fret to the build. I have this on order with my LHS and it should arrive in mid-August. Until then I won't be doing much on the kit, if at all. The aircraft will be rigged, of course. It will be done with elastic fishing line glued with CA. That's all for now. Thanks for looking. Jaime
  22. Does anyone produce decals for these aircraft, preferably for 781 Squadron FAA, flying out of HMS Daedalus?
  23. Hello Chaps, This was the 7th model that I built since starting modeling in January 2014. I completed this on April 27th, 2014. This was my first Tamiya kit and I really loved the build, it went together so well and some great looking details included such as the bomb bay with fuel cells, the cockpit and the undercarriage. This was the kit that got me turned on to loving Tamiya kits and just happens to be my favorite British Fighter Bomber Aircraft. There are plenty of after-market enhancements available for this kit, but, this was built out of the box. If you haven't built this kit before and you're a lover of the "Mossie", I highly recommend this kit, it's a joy to build and looks great when completed. I used the kits decals for the instrument panel and seat belts, because at the time, I wasn't happy with my dry-brushing skills to attempt painting them. I also left the canopy unglued so that I could remove it to see inside the cockpit area, and, also the front machine guns access panel was left unglued. I just wanted to share this with you guys, as presently, I haven't touched styrene for two weeks due to being actively searching for a new home to buy with my wife. One that has a nice big spare room to accommodate my hobby with capacity to display at least 12 new models a year for the next....hmm.....however many more years I live and am capable of modeling! I hope you enjoy my build, and, I'm always open to constructive criticism, as complacency doesn't exist in my vocabulary. I'm never totally happy with my last build, I'm my own worst critic and try to push myself further with each new build...... If you'd like to see my "Final Reveal" YouTube video for this build, here is the link to that...it has a couple of good sound tracks to accompany the build! https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=3tpAeOSnKY8 Thanks in advance for taking a look and for any comments you make! Cheers, Martin
  24. After the Hornet F. & F.3 (http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234953190-148-dh103-hornet-f13-sea-hornet-nf21-by-trumpeter-f1-released-f3-nf21-box-arts/?p=1510384 ), Trumpeter is to release a 1/48th de Havilland DH.103 Sea Hornet NF.21 kit - ref.02895. Release is expected for late June 2015. So available in the best hobbyshops in July-August 2015. 25. Beeing uttlerly undiscerning I add another one to the pile... Enter Heritage Aviations de Havilland Comet racer: The D.H. 88 Comet kit is a 100% Polystyrene-free resin kit with vacuformed clear parts and white metal detail parts. Decals are included as well. All well packed in a sturdy box. The kit dates back to the previous owner of Heritage Aviation and thus is a bit older, which can be seen in the details and mold quality. Compared to newer resin kits this one looks to be "exciting". I purchased this kit some years ago but never picked myself up to start it (I shudder at the tought of the u/c assembly and the fuselage - see below). There are three seats included. Two were not 100% OK but one was very good and I recased it in resin (not shown). The lack of photoetch parts became unbearable to me at some time and I did new instrument panels in CorelDraw and had them etched by Peter Kormos (excellent guy! - see Tinyland.com). As said the castings are so-so. Some pin-holes and some larger ones... One of the biggest flaws is the fuselage which has very prominent steps from misaligned molds. I have the stron feeling that one side is longer than the other giving it a banana-like shape from above. At last I have made out a way to solve this in the years the kit rested in my stash. Wish me luck or better a broken leg so I can stay some weeks at home finishing all the started kits... ;-) Rene
