  1. Hello all, This is a placeholder for my Ju87 STGB entry with: Lots of very finely molded parts Most of which are intact all bar: The pilot's seat which had become detached from the sprue and suffered damage to the frame, the part isn't up to much anyway so a quickboost resin replacement is on its way. Other than that it'll be as supplied in the box. Cheers, Mark.
  2. Recently a relative gifted me an Airfix 1/35 M10 tank destroyer. Since I am home on acation now, I decided to get right into it. Photos to follow. Any ideas??
  3. Forgive the disorganistation, here's the box. Containing spares from every Lancaster I've built, and a Dambuster kit - without decals or instructions, or the Upkeep. This kit cost me £3 from IPMS Avon show in 2006, and the M&E Lancastrian conversion.
  4. So, my latest adventure into the wonderful hobby of model building. The new Airfix 1:24 F6F-5 Hellcat: Going to be doing it in the "Operation SUNFISH" scheme, (only just because I think the other schemes look less interesting, just being blue [;)]) As usual, I just dived straight in without thought of photos and have only now thought to take any! This is being built OTB with the exception of the guns. Bought a replacement brass set (tho can't remember who from!) The cockpit, fuse and wings went together without many problems. Only issue I faced was when I joined the fuse and wings together and found the fuse was slightly larger than the gap in the wings! No doubt an oversight on my part, but nothing some sanding couldn't fix. Bit of overspray in the cockpit where I got carried away with the rattle can Have now just finished up the engine, added the extra detail with 0.7mm copper wire as suggested in the instructions..............question, what colour should the copper hoses be? Black?? Thinking I might leave it copper colour to give a bit of 'character'. Thats it for now.............more to come..............thinking I have lots of 'free time' due to the current corona situation Stay safe out there.
  5. Douglas DC-10-30 Finnair, 1990s Airfix 1/144 kit + FDcals + Nazca details Another one for the Douglas Commercials line up. Anyone who has built this kit will know that if you build it OOB the engines hang so low that they touch the ground, so the pylon attachments were removed from the wings and the pylons themselves reduced in size. I also added some stiffeners inside the wings before assembly as the whole thing is too flimsy otherwise. Wing surface details are of the very fine raised line type, which had to be completely removed because there were some sink marks to be filled and sanded. Just as well because Airfix marked in too many spoilers! So all wing detail was scribed in. Why Finnair? Just because it’s a great looking old school livery. Thank you FDcal. I also used the Nazca DC-10 details sheet which I liked a lot. Much simpler than trying to engrave the cargo doors, vents, etc on the fuselage. Paint was of course Halford’s Appliance White, with wings finished in AK Extreme Metal Polished Aluminium and Xtracrylic Dark Gull Grey and Light Aircraft Grey over Tamiya grey primer.
  6. Happy New Year all! Here is my entry to the GB, yet another Airfix Stuka, which is looking like a popular choice so far. I am not overly enamored with the choice of transfers ootb so i will source some AM versions for my build. Will get started shortly, thanks for looking, Cheers! Greg
  7. This is the very old Airfix kit of the fabulous Battle of Britain fighter, the Hurricane. V6799 was flown by P/O K. Mackenzie from RAF Kenley. In October of 1940 he shot down an Me109 before tipping over another with his wingtip having run out of ammo. He then belly landed the Hurricane in a field! Built oob, with just a tiny bit of scratchbuild in the cockpit and the E-z line wire for the aerial. Huge thanks to @mackem01 for the decals! The old kit ones were cracked and unusable.
  8. A tribute to the pilots and ground crews of the RAF during the Battle of Britain. Depicting 601Sqn pilot P/O Billy FISKE (US) and 602Sqn fighter Ace P/O Osgood Hanbury with sound and movement from Magic Scale Modeling. 2020 is the 80th anniversary where the RAF made its mark as the world’s finest air force having faced overwhelming odds against the Luftwaffe. The history of the bravery of the men and women in the air and ground is well documented. As a founder member of the Tangmere Sector Modellers IPMS who are based at the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum which is located on the site of one of the most famous Battle of Britain RAF bases and squadrons. This diorama is to honour two of those squadrons, one based at Tangmere and the other at RAF Westhampnett (now Goodwood) which was within the Tangmere sector of operations and in particular two pilots one of whom was the first American ‘eagle’ pilot to be killed in the battle. The Hawker Hurricane is from the Airfix Ready for Battle set, along with the figures and equipment. Supplemented by Revell RAF ground personnel set. The Spitfire is the new too Tamiya and the Hangar is from Large Scale Models.
  9. Seeing as we can't go out much I may as well start another kit. This Hurricane is ancient, picked up on ebay last year for about a tenner if I remember correctly. So I guess I shouldn't expect too much. Are these colours close enough, or do I need a lighter brown and olive drab? I'm guessing early/Battle of Britain Hurricanes were matt finish? Sadly the decals are cracked and unusable.
  10. Hi folk's,here's Airfix's old Viking which I'm calling done.lost interest for a while then she had a compressor fall on her which cracked the fuselage open but the old girl was repaired and finally finished. Many thanks for looking in.
  11. Hot off the building board is my rendition of the diminutive Airfix Gloster Gladiator. It was a fairly quick build and the only additions I’ve made to the kit are seat belts, a scratch built foot step (not all were three pointers), after market decals and rigging wires. This was the first time I’ve tried oil paint dots for weathering and also the first time I’ve used Uschi Van der Rosten rigging thread. I definitely need to use less oil dots, or at least smaller ones as it’s so easy to over do things, and I need to use less super glue for attaching the rigging so it dries quicker. Paints are Tamiya acrylic and the clear lacquers are Humbrol Matt over Humbrol gloss. Anyway here it is warts ‘n all, and any constructive pointers gratefully received.
  12. I had a look through my Sea King course notes and found these two illustrations of the HF aerial lay out for the HAR3 and 3A as the Airfix instructions are incorrect and appear to be a hybrid of both types. I hope Britmodellers find them useful.
  13. Harrier GR3, 4 Squadron, Royal Air Force Germany This is the Airfix new tool 1/72 Harrier with CMK resin engine and nozzle set, Freightdog replacement fin, Airwaves RBF pennants and Pavla aftermarket seat; the decals are from the kit. Built and displayed to depict a deployed operations field maintenance task on the Rolls Royce Pegasus engine with MT, GSE and other clutter to recreate a typical scene in RAFG during the 1980’s. The camouflage netting was omitted for clarity and all reference photos showed field maintenance without it anyway. The Bedford MK bowser is the ex-JB models kit modified with scratch built wing mirrors, bonding strap and hessian screen cover. A Wiking 1/87 scale Unimog was repainted and detailed with a Kingfisher miniatures resin trailer load, Bren Gun crew steps, spare decals and scratch built mirrors. All of the other accessories were from Flightpath, various model railway aftermarket suppliers or scratch built while all scenery was from Woodland’s Scenics on expanded polystyrene in a box frame from Hobbycraft. Clutter includes drip trays, floodlights, oil/jerry cans, generator, cables, chocks, toolkits and caddy, fire extinguisher, scaffolding, Houchin and a lineys jacket hanging from one of the pylons. Figures are from Noch, Preiser and Matchbox.
  14. Hi all. With the Spitfire complete, I've changed scale, era and propulsion method and have gone to the recent 1/72 Airfix FGR.2 Phantom with a few extras. It'll be built with kit decals of the white tailed aircraft while it was working out of RAF Mount Pleasant. I'll replace the kit lumps that are supposed to represent Sidewinders with the much nicer versions from Eduard. I love Adam Toobey's artwork. I've got a bit done on it already however I've hit a bit of an 'ugh' moment. The cockpit is fine out of the box as the cockpit will be closed however the intakes are annoying and fiddly. The left and right halves of each intake are okay, it's the outside fuselage shoulder piece that is frustrating. The ejector pin marks have been filled with talc and CA. You might be able to see in the image where I've removed some material to help it fit. It needs a little more but frustrating to do nonetheless. Has anyone else had problems with the fit in this area? The fiddly fit of the intake shoulder The lower wing section also has part of the forward lower fuselage which has an awkward seam that needs to be to cleaned up. This will have to be done after the intakes are installed. Sadly there's no swapping assembly steps here. I'm unsure if I'll get a resin replacement set for the burner exhausts as the sprue attachment points are smack bang in the middle of some nice rib detail.... Cheers, Mick
  15. Hello guys, here's my latest model, Airfix's Spitfire Mk.22 in 1:48. The kit had some moulding issues, and the landing gear struts don't have the most positive attachment points, but I got there in the end.
  16. I built this oob from the old 1997 Airfix kit, which I thought despite its age went together pretty well. The famous 'Tigers' of 74 Sqn were the first to fly the mighty Lightning, and the only unit to operate the first F1 version. Flying from Coltishall under the command of Sqn Ldr (later Grp Capt) Peter Botterill, the squadron's aircraft began receiving black fins soon after entering service, and formed the Tigers aerobatic team that displayed at Farnborough and other venues in the early 1960s. This is Sqn Ldr Botterill's aircraft, XM143/A. All comments and suggestions more than welcome. Keep safe out there.
  17. This is a conversion of the Airfix HMS Hotspur. HMS Dulverton was a Type II Hunt-class destroyer of the Royal Navy. She was laid down on 16 July 1940, and launched 1 April1941, she saw service during the Second World War until being damaged by German aircraft in 1943 during the Battle of Leros and was scuttled. My grandmother’s brother served on HMS Dulverton as an Ordinary Signalman and was lost at sea in 1942, aged 19.
  18. Hello guys, this is my quarentine project number five, the Spitfire 22/24 from Airfix in 1:48. As you can see in the following photos, this kit came with missing plastic in some areas. Nothing some CA can't fix, but still annoying: Here's where I'm now, a fully built airframe:
  19. This is the Airfix 1:72 Harrier GR.9 kit. Built oob. It represents Harrier GR.9 ZG477 No.1(F) Sqn flown by Wg Cdr Dave Haines call sign 'Jedi 01' RAF Cottesmore RAF Harrier Retirement Dec 2010
  20. Hi all, I was feeling a bit bruised by my Tarpon struggles (paused for a while) 😞, so I thought a nice stress-free, OOB build was required for restoration of flagging mojo. I decided on Airfix' 1:48 Sea Hurricane MkIB, AF955 as flown by Lt. 'Dickie' Cork DSO DFC, 880 Sqn FAA from HMS Indomitable during Operation 'Ironclad', the campaign to recapture Diego Suarez in Madagascar, 1942. I could not find too many images of the actual aircraft other than the one below second in line (copyright IWM): Built OOB with the addition of Eduard seatbelts and masks, finished in a mixture of AK Interactives and Humbrol acrylics. Critique and comments welcome as ever. Anyway, here she is - thanks for looking! Roger
  21. Recently finished for the Stuka STGB, it was built using the kit and markings from the 'Dogfight Double' boxing, the one with a Gloster Gladiator. Easy to put together, with nice cockpit detail, I liked the option of the pilots seat with belts moulded in or not. I decided to give 'Hairy Stick' painting a go, for the first time since I got back into the hobby a few years ago. XtraAcylic upper colours with Vallejo ModelAir below. 'Klear' brushed on (which I normally do with Airbrushed models), then brushed on Vallejo water thinned Matt Varnish. I'm pleased with the overall effect but need to practice a lot more, brush strokes visible galore! Had an accident with the decals, wasn't going to put on every stencil, but managed to tip half a bottle of Micro Sol over the sheet, apart from the main markings I could only rescue one of the warning triangles! The base is just one I made to occasionally take photo's of models on. Davey.
  22. Here's my 1/48 Hunter T.8 in FRADU colours, built for the In The Navy GB using the Airfix kit and the excellent AeroCraft models conversion (many thanks @Ali62!). Build thread is here. thanks for looking Julian
  23. Hi, Just finished my Spitfire. Nice kit, although some of the parts are packed very close together and need care removing from the sprues. Added some AM seat belts and decals but otherwise oob. And I believe the spinner spiral may be going the wrong way. That's the way its printed on the sheet. Hope you like it. Regards Martin
  24. Dear All It would be nice to know we have our own personal rescue helicopter standing by, I now have my own, albeit in 1/72 scale and unlikely to be able to winch me up! This is the Airfix HAR3 with Eduard PE and the Xtradecal markings for 202 squadron RAF Lossiemouth early 1990s. Perhaps some of you remember this Crab rescue bird? Looking at pictures on the internet, from heavy use some had exhaust streaking down their backs. I don't mind Airfix's heavy panel lines so much on a helicopter and I added my own rivets. The lights are lenses for Little Cars I filled the interior with lots of first aid bags made from putty! Like many Airfix kits I found the engineering ambitious but the fit not perfect Hope you like it? Andrew
  25. Hello all - can I hop aboard with this Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero "V-103" Airfix starter kit? This particular aircraft was attached to the Imperial Japanese Navy Tainan Air Group based at the time at Lakunai Airfield, Papua New Guinea from April to November 1941. Many thanks Tom
