  1. Hi all, Having reached the stage where the first of my East Anglian Phantoms needs painting, I thought I'd have a closer look at the decal sheet which is providing the markings. Given that I have a fair few F-4Cs, Ds and RF-4Cs, I'll probably use the entire sheet. I was looking at the placement guide for 69-0381 (incorrectly depicted as 65-0381) and noticed that there are no stencil type stars'n'bars bars for it. Looking further, it seems like there are a number of missing decals, as the numbers on the sheet only go up to 85, when the placement guide shows decals numbered up to 93 (at least). Am I missing an addendum sheet, or are all the sheets like this? I thought I'd ask before hassling Hannants! Cheers, Mark.
  2. At Shizuoka Hobby Show 2018 Platz is to release a new tool 1/72nd McDD F-4EJ Phantom II kit - ref. Sources: https://www.facebook.com/modelartinc/posts/1960234187384789 https://www.facebook.com/modelartinc/photos/pcb.1960234187384789/1960233957384812/?type=3&theater V.P.
  3. FG.1 Phantom Update sets, wheels & masks 1:72 Eduard for Airfix Kit The new Airfix Phantom kit is a great kit, however that has not stopped Eduard from wanting to add their own brand of magic to the kit. Update Set (73628) Inside there are two frets, one coloured and one not. The coloured parts are mainly for the cockpit including new instrument panels, sides panels, and various levers. Also supplied are seatbelts and ejection seat handles for both seats , as well as the seat tops and pads. For the rest of the airframe new exhaust rings are provided, along with the main airbrake interiors and the prominent aux intake doors. For the canopies mirrors are provided. If the modeller only wants the the cockpit parts then they are available as a Zoom set. Full Set ZOOM Undercarriage Set (72668) This set really does what it says on the packet it contains a parts for the kits undercarriage. For the nose bay a new interior and door are provided along with parts for the nose leg. For the mains new internals are provided along with new skins for the main gear doors and complete doors for the smaller ones. New links are provided for the legs. In addition to the landing gear parts new vents are provided for the tops & undersides of the main intakes something which is missing on the airfix kit. Wheel Set (672174) As it says on the box this is a complete set of both main and both front wheels for the kit. These are more detailed drop ins for the kit wheels. A set of painting masks is also included. Masks (CX506) Eduard provide masks for both canopies and the wheels. Review samples courtesy of
  4. Hi all Has anyone built this kit, or have any opinions? I'm after a 1/48 RAF Phantom but I don't want to pay about £50 which seems to be the minimum on ebay for them. How does the old Revell one build, is it as bad as the artwork suggests, or can it be built into a reasonable RAF Phantom with just some aftermarket decals? I'm not sure those jetpipes look like Speys! Should this kit be avoided really, I don't want it to look like I've just stuck roundels on an F-4B. Equally, I don't want to spend about £30 on Eduard parts either.
  5. F-4E Phantom II - 111th Sq. "Panter", TuAF, 1st Main Jet Base Eskişehir, 1992 Well known Hasegawa kit, Hi-decal (No. 48-028) with some of kits own decals. Built for a collector.
  6. Hi again all, I've dipped in to the slides again and have elected to try and get something half decent from a set of Kodachromes that I shot in 1982 at McConnell AFB. The 161st Tactical Fighter Training Squadron, Kansas Air National Guard was based there at the time of my visit. Once again, like my Hulman experience The visit was eventful in that our guide took us out to the KC-135 ramp and I managed to cross the red line, bringing a pair of very keen and eager security police my way. Despite having watched me enter the area without using the correct entry point they wanted to flex a bit of muscle. All was good, though, and we went on our way around the ramp. Well, here are the Phantoms: If I manage to wrestle any more in to submission I'll post them. Martin
  7. I’m after some guidance and advice. I’m looking at building a 74 tiger squadron F4-J phantom. I’m looking at a ESCI 1/72 model or revell at the minute. The part I’m struggling to get are any after market decals of all the small stuff I.e no step, hook points etc for this aircraft. I’ve got the 74 main decals sorted. Just looking to add more detail with smaller ones. Struggling to find anything with xtradecal and modeldecal. Does anyone know of any or where to look further thanks
  8. After some advice please people. I’ve got a 1/72 phantom F4-J and wondering if anyone knows the closest colour to the duck egg grey that the early raf f4’s had due to yellow primer then raf grey on top. I normally use humbrol. Trying to build one as 74 squadron markings as the old man worked in them late 80s for him. Any help please would be greatly accepted.
  9. Hi all. Simple question. Do you have Phantom C/D photos in wraparound Europe1 scheme to share, please? Thanks!
  10. Basically moving this thread as it were from WIP to here. Replacement intake parts for the 1/72 Airfix Phantom see on website http://aerocraftmodels.bigcartel.com/
  11. My first attempt at airbushing turned out OK (I think), but I did cheat by picking a Gulf War Jaguar which was filthy, so any screw ups could be hidden under the weathering. I bought a tile from B&Q and painted a yellow line down it. I think as a base for photos it looks OK. Even my hated Gannet looks better on it. This time with the Phantom I’ll attempt a clean build. The plan is to pre-shade the control surfaces then spray it in a three colour grey USMC scheme. Other than that I’ll keep the filth to a minimum with maybe just some staining around the jet pipes and underside of the tail Cockpit done by brush. The instruments look OK in real scale and will be hidden in the airframe with the canopies down. Blown up on a 24” monitor they look horrendous! Whatever. The seats look alright too, but I added masking tape belts. Other than that the build will be OOB. The CoG is somewhere near the main landing gear, but I added weight to the nose just to be sure. Fit is a bit “Italeri”, so some filling and sanding is required. The detail isn’t great, but this is just another test to see if I can do it before risking something that cost twice as much.
  12. After the FG.1 (link) , Airfix is to release in October 2018 (?) a 1/72nd McDD Phantom FGR.2 kit - ref. A06017 Schemes: 1) XV466 D, No1435 FLT, RAF Mount Pleasant November 1991 2) FGR.2 XV469 H 2 Squadron June 1976 3) FGR.2 Phantom XV408 92 Squadron RAF Germany Sources: https://www.airfix.com/uk-en/shop/new-for-2018/mcdonnell-douglas-fgr2-phantom-1-72.html https://www.airfix.com/uk-en/mcdonnell-douglas-fgr2-phantom-1-72.html V.P.
  13. A render of one my all time favorite jet, my not quite completed model of the F-4B, seen in the colours of VF-111 Sundowners. One of the most colourful paintchemes for the american F-4's. This image was made during christmas holiday. Looking at it now, it occurs to me now that perhaps the top surface colour could be a little darker grey and the bombs look a little funny with a somewhat boxy nose... it seems the me and Mr.Spook needs to get back to the drawing table again. It shouldn't be too hard to fix.
  14. My last build for 2017 is a commission from the navigator of XV426 which flew with 56sqn RAF. The scheme is from the final scheme of the aircraft including the red cockpit surround which was added by the Norwich Aviation Museum who now owns the cockpit section of the aircraft. Using the excellent, but now dated Hasegawa FGR 2 kit along with Eduard cockpit set. Painting was done using Vallejo air and the decals were a mixture of kit and spares. The Spooky II mascot is a 9G mm figure by aerobonus.
  15. Hornby just charged me for my pre-order on the new 1/72 Phantom FG.1 so these should start showing up in people's mailboxes and in stores soon. I can't wait to get mine; I ordered 5 to get free shipping to the US.
  16. Does anyone know if any manufacturer makes an F-4M or K with the Spey engines that could be made as an RAF Phantom in 1/48th scale? Ebay just seems to throw up American versions, with only F-4Js suitable as a 74 Sqn jet, but I'd like an FGR2 ideally.
  17. hi all, Here's one i started today and finished three hours later! It is a 1/144 Tomytec pre-painted kit that i bought on a recent trip to Japan after reading in a magazine, SAM i think, about how good they were to build. All i can say is, that if you get a chance to build a modern Tomytec kit, go for it. They are unbelieveable. Bear in mind that the tail is only 30mm long, so that gives you an idea of the print quality. Everything fitted perfectly except for some minor water-base filling and wiping on the fuel tanks. It even has a metal pitot tube!!! Comments welcome Andy
  18. Hello all you phabulous Phantom enthusiasts. I am building up the info I will need to convert a 1:144 scale F-4J Phantom into a F-4K/FG.1 version and would like to know whether the nose contours are the same. I have some info on the enlarged rear and underside for the engines but could do with some differences in contours if that info is out there. At this scale, it is not imperative that every inch of detail is exact and I just need to work out where to add milliput to get the shape correct. Thanks in advance for any helpful advice, and plans/drawings if possible. Mike

  20. Good evening mates, to be honest, at the moment my Jaguars’ main wheel bays are a little too demanding in terms of …inspiration and I’ve ended up postponing and postponing them. Now there are a few things happening to other members that have let me understand that probably…it’s normal to loose a bit of motivation when a project is taking too long to be brought to an end. Fritag has a perseverance I admire, but we’ve just seen he just went through what first it looked like an experiment (with those PE) and it may turn out as a new job!!! Ex-FAAWAFU was a bit tired with his Sea King and is now going Through Supermarine’ production!!! Perdu is passing with nonchalance from a “Perduxbox” Buccaneer to a “Pernovo” Gannet, Martian’s putting everything else momentarily aside to start a Kamov 28. Forgetting for a moment he did momentarily put his Roc project aside to go on with what seems to have been another project momentarily put aside … the Karel Doorman’s last cruise. This last Thread , whose meaning I understood only on a second time (initially I thought Karel Doorman was a friend of Martian’s!!!) reminded me an old dream I had for a long time , but I never started for lack of …existing models in the right scale (for me 1/48). Back in 2011, on one of my many journeys to the UK, I had bought Aircraft magazine’s April issue, to have something to read in the night. ] In it there was a beautiful article about Ark Royal’s last cruise.I literally felt in love with the opening page picture ( here below ) and I started dreaming of a diorama depicting a Gannet, a Phantom and a Buccaner parked on the flight deck. All those coloured tails were wonderful and a Wessex as that depicted in the article’s third page would have been a nice addiction. At that time, I discussed the idea with my friends modellers and I must say the picture was a real success. But then, the idea only remained an idea for all these years. The “Royal Navy… air” I’ve been breathing since I joined BM and in particular Martian’s friend Karel’s thread brought the old dream back to my mind. The only thing I’d liketo avoid, is to bring the Jaguars to an end first and start working to the Ark project every now and then. About it I have a question for the well informed,: did these helicopters belong to a Squadron ? The aircraft on board the Ark during her last cruise I found what follows: 1. NAS 809 on Buccaneers. 2. NAS 892 on Phantoms. 3. NAS 849 on Fairey Gannets EAW3. 4. ??? on Westland Wessex. 5. NAS 824 on Westland Sea kings. 1. I had been waiting for years for a Decent Gannet AEW 3 in 1/48th , but finally went for the Sword model in 1/72nd, as I saw it and couldn’t resist! That was my first model in 1/72nd after more than 20 years!!! The model looks great and I thought to depict it while landing… …so I purchased the Eduard PE flaps ( I love that system and some times I’ll scratch build it for my Wyvern, which I…left momentarily aside a few years ago!!!). Of course, the fact this set is dedicated to the Revell EAW1 kit wouldn’t have been a problem…untill I heard on this version the wing was shorter!!! My wife, whom I call “Treasure” is always disappointed as she says I don’t listen to her and she’s got to tell me twhat I’ve got to do at least twice! Eduard Staff may have been listening , and that’s probably why I had a doupble copy of theinstruction sheet!!! Anyway this isn’t going to be important, as I’m not going to use most of the set!!! I also purchased the ALLEY CAT decaal sheet dedicated to thie version of the Gannet, as I heard the orignal stencils are so thin, the ay just …get lost in the decalling process. 2. The news that Airfix British Phantom’s will be released in the next few months, together with the high quality standard this glorious Manufacturer has reached in their last products, did the rest! I’ve got it on order. I also ordered Xtradecal dedicated sheet 72268, to have more choice. The Phantom doesn’t say much in the parking configuration, much better to show it ready to launch, maybe with the deck’s heat deflectors open. 3. Perdu’s Matchbox Buccaneer’s thread gave me strength and I bought aRevell reboxing of the thing. If I follow Perdu’s instruction , I can do it!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNIrEYimmXs …sorry, but I couldn’t find the english version!!!! The only problem seems to be the decal sheet: I’ve got the Airfix sheet for 1/48th kit, but 4. Italery Wessex will be chosen to represent the SAR aircraft. About it I have a question for the well informed,: did these helicopters belong to a Squadron ? I can’t identify the crest on the top starboard (…correct…???) side, behind the cockpit. 5. Hannants seems to have only the Airfix kit on stock, which should be a new tooling. Any ideas if there’s some PE or decal suggested for the version belonging to NAS 824 on board Ark Royal in her last cruise? On second thoughts, I’m getting interested in depicting the Ark herself. The model which seems to be the closest one to this configuration of the famous ship seems to be Fujimi 1/700th scale kit. The main question mark for a project like this is: how to develop it? I mean, the first idea started from was a diorama with a Gannet, a Phantom and a Bucc as shown in the picture. This could do, with all aircraft in parking configuration with wings folded. On the other hand, these aircraft could be depicted in a quite effective “ready to take off” pose . • The Buccaneer is quite singular in both cases, ( wings and airbrake folded or nose up , ready for launch).Even showing it on the lift notfully up wouldn’t be bad!!! • The Phantom’s best configuration is with th nose gear extended , ready for launch. • The Gannet is quite singular with folded wings , hook down, open canopy and ladder out, but it’s not bad even with those curious flaps extended. Even a pre-flight configuration could be interesting , with a couple of crews and what seems to be a starter, as seen for Buccaneers too. At the moment I’ve already started cutting the Gannet’s flaps, just to discover the Eduard PEset is wrong for this model. I could still use the folding mechanism struts( if this is the right name for them!!!) and modify the flaps cut off the wings. • The Wessex could be depicted parked with folded rotor or even i 1/144 scale in the background of a Buccaneer or the Phantom ready for launch, as shown in one of the article’s pictures. • The Sea king is the less colorful of the party and is still a question mark. Suggestions are welcomed. I could : 1. build a big base depicting the flight deck for the three aircraft as in the article’s picture; 2. Build a separate base for each model; 3. Build a big base with some sort of …”islands “for each model, something like my F-15, as in the picture below.I like this idea, but room might be a problem. That’s all for now… enough written modelling , for this weekend!!! Hope I’ll soon share some real modelling. In the meantime, any answers to my questions or suggestions are welcomed. Thanks for your patience!!! Ciao Massimo
  21. Hi Just before many 1/72 Phantom are about to flood our shelves I have just finished this Fujimi Phantom FGR.2 in grey-green camouflage. It was an easy kit to build even if the level of details is basic in the cockpit. That is the reason why I prefered closing the canopy. I have been inspired by a picture in the book RAF Phantom from Peter Foster and this is the Phantom FGR.2 XV497 #A of No 19 squadron in August 1983, a climax year in the Cold War. Transfers are coming from different Xtracolour sheets. I hace still in my stash another box of this kit but I am looking forward for the FAA Airfix one to come. Patrick
  22. I recently got a Fujimi 1:72nd Phantom FG.1 kit in an attempt to re-ignite my modelling passion from some years ago. Since it arrived, an impending house move has come into play, so it's likely going to stay into the box until the new year now :-( However, doesn't mean I can't make plans. I was wondering if I should invest in any of the after market detailing kits that appear to be available for the likes of cockpits, exteriors, ejection seats etc. I really want this kit to be as good as I can make it, and seeing the quality of the builds on here had inspired me. However, I have to be realistic - I have not done any modelling for 20 odd years so I ain't going to be winning any prizes. Are any of the kits, such as the QMT exterior detailing kit, worth getting hold of? What exactly does that kit get me? It's hard to tell just by looking at it.. Thanks, Al.
  23. Hello! Here is one of my models. In building I used Eduard whells set, Q-M-T photo etched set, Master Pilot Tubes, Ejection seats Neomega, Reskit Matra -155, In painting I used MR Hobby paints. Weathering- oil dots and washes. Decal- Modeldecal.
  24. Hello All, Here's the Phantom that I tried but failed to finish in the 24 hour GB earlier this year. I was hoping for some outdoor shots but it's too late in the year now, so I took some photos at the bench with my phone: And with my Airfix F-111 from the GB - I was expecting the Phantom to be a lot smaller but it is not: Thanks for looking, Adrian
  25. Looking at Thunder and Lightning http://www.thunder-and-lightnings.co.uk/phantom/history.php was there any talk of any other front line Royal Navy Phantom squadrons apart from 892 ? TIA Robert
