  1. Arrived yesterday after amazon sending the old tool version and me having to send it back A quick shot wit the iPhone sorry about the poor picture
  2. This is a build of the old tool Airfix Hurricane which I bought 2 years ago and stashed it since. The good thing is about the old tool - it will be a more quickly build than the new tool (which is a plus for me at the moment). I will keep the canopy shut as there will be the day when I build the new tool and so will keep the detail work for this. It will be OOB except a new vac canopy and DIY vinyl masks for the codes and roundels. So there will be more painting than building this time. Pics will follow soon. René
  3. I'll be building the aircraft of PIt Off Leonard Walter Stevens and Plt Off Arthur Victor Clowes.
  4. Decided it's time i took part in my first ever group build, this one is just too good to miss! I went to my local supplier of kits today with the intention of picking up a Boulton Paul Defiant, but after seeing the new Airfix Ready for Battle kit i couldn't resist, so it look's like i've got some work to do! This will be a tribute not only to the brave souls that took to the air but also to the hard working ground crew that helped make it all possible. My knowledge of the ground equipment and vehicles is a bit sparse, so i'll be asking for advice as i go regarding colours etc etc. Hopefully by the end i'll have a nice little diorama! Anyway, i'm looking forward to building this, and watching everyone work their magic on their chosen kits. Thanks, Nick
  5. Can anyone help with info on Tom's Hurricane. His log book shows that he flew V7313 mostly during late 1940. Thanks
  6. Hi, i will be entering my build of the Airfix 1/48 Ready For Battle gift set. i have had my eye on getting this kit for some time, and when i found out about this group build i thought it enough justification to build this kit/set (i was going to build the Eduard 1/48 Spitfire Mk IXc, which will just have to wait). annoyingly i will have to hand paint it as my airbrush is broken at the moment, but will try my best. (image courtesy of airfix)
  7. Now that my Phantom in the STGB is done, I am going to enter with this one: Can't wait to get started!
  8. Good morning to all, I want to participate in this group with a 87 Squadron RAF Hurricane Mk.I, piloted by ace Ian R. Gleed. The plane shows the personal mark of Gleed, a cat named Figaro that appears in the Disney film Pinocchio, and that was his personal emblem on all planes in which he flew to his disappearance The kit is the Mk.I 1/48 Hasegawa Nightfighter, although I build day fighter. Like almost all models of this brand the level of detail is very high and the quality of finish is remarkable. I put the ceremonial pictures of the box and some content here. I will use some aftermarket as Eduard's RAF seatbelts WWII and a paint mask of the same brand that has not yet arrived. I hope to do a good job because both the event and the site deserve. Thank you very much to all and welcome.
  9. My second entry in the BoB GB. Old tool Airfix Hurricane 1. I have the new tooling but thought i'd do the oldie first to see how it stands up to all the new versions of the kit that are being modeled. I have a falcon vac canopy, and some AM decals for this one, other than that it will be oot the box! I am toying with the idea of modeling it on a clear plastic rod with the prop spinning and the wheels going up.... but i'll see how it goes. Markings are from Aces of the Empire sheet with one option of an unknown Polish pilot, which appeals to me as mostly folk model the aces aircraft. Anyway, heres some pics of the box n' bits!!
  10. Right chaps.... my hat is in the ring. So I have tried three time to do this post so hopefully this is the lucky time! This year for me has been about reading up on the BofB. ... obviously. And one chap in that reading caught my attention! This chap I mean look at him! What's not to like... read the book he has had a colourful life! But the bit I want to do is his last hurricane while commanding 151 sqn DZ-W. I also want to do a few of the squadrons interesting stable mates. So the kits! Are these poor souls.... They will be modified (why didn't I just re scribe the old tool) So up first! Teddy's mount on leaving 151 (he had 9 crashes in his life... two I think being in the BofB and both were into the channel (actually one may have been the battle of France) one he walked in when they were looking at appointing a replacement. ..) which will be DZ-W not DZ-M as on the book. I chose DZ-W In a way to recreate the model the squadron gave him on his departure during the BofB. .. A brass mki with DZ-W on it. I will be using photos of DZ-R and other references from books and Internet of the squadron as they were not photographed that often. So wing chopped off and these added Hopefully this is within 25%? They will be chopped up and have a lot of work done? Next up is DZ-Z fabric wing cannon protoype armed with twin 20 mm cannons. I will be using the freightdog's resin conversion kit. This AC was first posted to 76 squadron (?) And then arrived at 151 to be flown by R.L. 'Dick' Simth. So this will be oob with the cannon and 5 spoke wheels added. Thanks to Colin@freightdog for letting me know it was back in stock and very reasonably priced! Next is a bit of a funny one to nail down, but I have gone with what appears to be the conclusion of a mki with protoype metal c wing for DZ-C also flown by Dick Smith in 151 both these protoypes he scored kills in.... not bad as they were underpowered with the cannons attached but obviously packed a punch in the right hands. So the below will be used... Now this could be tricky as marrying the two up could be difficult! Hmmmm could be interesting. .... Also here is a picture before getting to the squadron Mk I? More info on the prototypes can be found here http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234957663-l1750-hurricane-dz-z-cannons/ So that's the opening gambit! Let me know your thoughts or if you have any more info?!.... its a hurricane so that's the troy signal in the sky! Lol (only joking troy) Rob
  11. Hi all, third and final 1/48 scale entry is the Airfix new tool Hurricane which in the box looks to be a stunner, she will be finished in the colour,s of 303(Polish) Sqn RAF flown by Fl.Off.Witold Urbanowicz (see link)This build is dedicated to the pilots from the Commonwealth and other countries that took part in the Battle of Britain especially those Poles and Czechs who would never return home and enjoy the Freedom they fought so hard to secure for the rest of us. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witold_Urbanowicz
  12. Here is another of my older builds. The very nice new tool Mk 1 Hurricane from Airfix. Went together like a dream and has lots of nice detail. Built OOTB part brush painted part rattle can. Hope you like!
  13. Being rather intrigued by the night/white underside painting of early-war RAF types, I was wondering what types were so painted. So far I have both the Hurricane & Spitfire, but am curious about whether other types, such as the Gladiator, Blenheim, Wellington, and Battle were similarly marked. Thanks.
  14. I finally finished my 1/48 Hurricane Mk I trop, as flown by Flying Officer V. C. "Woody" Woodward (Canada's second highest scoring ace) in Egypt 1940. No, I couldn't use the excellent Airfix, Italeri or Hasegawa kits - I had to beat my head against the @*&%$# Ark kit from Russia. (this explains the lack of "in progress" pictures, it wasn't till near the end that I thought it would be presentable!) On with the show (sorry there's so many photo's) Woody Woodward, in 1940, Egypt Thanks for looking, and comment and critiques always welcome, Colin
  15. I can now say, without a doubt, this is the absolute best Hurricane kit in 1/48 scale. Point blank. Done. Superbly engineered, and it fit exquisitely. Another triumph for Airfix! Looks like I'm pickling my Hase kits The ID letters on the port side were like that in my ref pics, so while it looks wonky, it apparently was like that on the real thing. I still didn't get quite right, but once I had laid the decal down, it didn't want to move, and I wasn't about to tempt fate. OOB with Xtradecals, paint was a combo of Mr. Color, and TMM. The build only took four days.
  16. These were two of the finest kits i have ever built. They are beautiful kits. They are both built straight from the box with the exeption of belts in the hurricane. The undersides and earth were airbrushed but the green was brush painted. That was a pain. The Tamiya paints airbrush beautifully , but not so good on the brush painting side i n my experience. I wish i could take better photos , they really dont do the complete models justice. My only small bugbear was the undercarriage on the spitfire. They could have been mounted better. Cue the Battle of Britain music!
  17. Hello, After a pause, here's my big Hurricane finished, and you can see the WIP here. I got this at a very cheap price from a well-known shopping catalogue and even paid it off over three months. Value for Money modelling. It's my first 1/24th build, and despite the age of the kit it's good. I did some work to reduce the over-sized spinner, and would like to have done better with the canopy framing and would recommend fairing in the landing lights before painting, but it's very much a Hurricane and the scale gives the model 'presence'. Thanks to all who commented and advised, welcome your thoughts on the end product. Since these were taken I've added the aerial wires and the gun-sight. Camera struggled to focus on the finished cockpit, so here's one from the WIP... Hope you enjoy it, I certainly did, just need somewhere to house it now. Take care, Matt
  18. My second attempt at the Airfix Hurri, Mostly OOB but added Eduard fabric belts, ez-line aerial and AML wheels VYC1 by jongwinnett, on Flickr VYC2 by jongwinnett, on Flickr WIP here
  19. Good Evening, Seem to have been on a bit of a roll at the moment, and have finished a couple of Battle of Britain subjects, my normal builds being fast jets. Airfix new release 1/72 kits are simply beautiful, and after completing a Spit Mk.1 that had languished on the shelf for 5 years, I realised I hadn't ever built a Hurricane to a reasonable standard so thought I'd give there Mk.1 a go. Here's the finished article, the first couple of pics were taken before I'd added the antenna wire. Decals are Xtradecal. Thanks for taking a peek, all feedback good or bad most welcome, Eng
  20. Hi! Here's my Hasegawa Hawker Hurricane Mk.I built OOB except pe seat belts from Eduard. The model is painted using Gunze colours. Sorry for the lousy photos. I've used my mobile cam. Best regards Rune Haugen Norway
  21. Want to get started on my Airfix fabric wing Hurricane, so I thought I'd check a few details. My intention is to build it as a very eary aircraft with a two blade propeller, kidney exhausts and no ventral fin. I already know the inaccuracies in the kit that needs correcting, e.g. the wheels, but there are a couple of details I'd like to check with the Hurricane experts here: 1) Cockpit colour - aluminum painted or the traditional cockpit green? 2) No reflector gun sight, just ring and bead? 3) No head rest armour plate? 4) Any other detail I might have missed? TIA
  22. I thought it may be of interest to show some of the Hurricane stuff that I've worked on past, present & am planning for the future. Since they are never really finished, I've put them in the work in progress area. Comments welcome. After moving recently, I've finally started to get my new workshop setup- very exciting!!!! Very chuffed to be able to hang some aeroplane stuff behind my workbench. My last workshop was so small I had no room for hanging pictures etc: I had ordered some pictures of Hurricanes being built in Canada and wanted to use them, this was the result: - I consider this a work in progress since I want to replace the side view of the Hurricane with something better. - The plan view Hurricane is the second version after the 1st 'melted' into a Hurricane caricature when I put the shadow box in the sun to evaporate some moisture behind the glass..... My wife hates this desk, so when we moved it went to the workshop. Very serendipitous, since it's amazing to have a 'staging area' next to the workbench where you can throw tools while you're working on stuff. It's also the sit down work area: - The print on the left is beautiful, Hurricane scramble by Robert Taylor. A prototype control line Hurricane. It's in the maintenance facility after tangling with a Garage-109 that broke it's tail off.....: - If I get back into control line I'll likely build an electric powered version with a built up fuselage. I'm going to turn these into some form of Hurricane display, still thinking about it's composition: - The propeller is definitely Rotol, but I doubt it's from a Hurricane. This is what happens when you can't sleep and you check ebay at 4am..... If anyone has information on Rotol propellers that could help me determine what aircraft this came from I'd be very interested in hearing from you. - The 'piece of Hurricane junk' is from the center section of a Hurricane which crashed on the Russian Steppes and was recovered 50+ years later. Originally produced by Can-Car, this bit has almost returned full circle. Winnipeg is not too far from Thunder Bay (Fort William), where Can-Car is located. - I just got this Hurricane print recently, I'm either going to frame it separately or make it into part of the display? Can't decide, opinions welcome. Not really Hurricane related. This is a merlin sump off a Mustang which the local museum was going to send for scrap. The gun sight is a likely a GGS Mk 4E from an Australian Sea Fury? Here's a better picture of the gun sight (not mine). If anyone has info verifying what this gunsight was used in I'd love to hear from you: Lot's of ideas, but lots of other hobbies too.....
  23. Hello all There have been a number of really good Hurricanes posted on here lately, so apologies if seeing another one induces any eye rolling or weary sighs... This is my build of Italeri's 1/48 Hurricane Mk1 in 1/48 from late last year. This was a really nicely detailed kit, but for a relatively new tooling (2011?), I was surprised to find a really nasty large step between the upper wings and the fuselage when fitted together. Took a lot of sanding to get it somewhere near level, so may have lost some detail in that area. Otherwise though, this was a nice kit to build, with some photo etch extras included in the box for the cockpit (seat harness and instrument panel, which I managed to install without ruining, for a nice change). It was painted with Gunze / Mr Hobby acrylics. The roundels on the upper wings were painted using Montex masks, but I found them quite fiddly to use even with just two colours, so bottled it when it came to the 3 and 4 coloured ones, and reverted to the kit decals. Limited the weathering to a panel line wash and some exhaust / gun stains. Overall, pretty happy with how it has turned out. Thanks for looking. Adam
  24. After a bit of feedback on the next aircraft kit from Tiryidium Models. Now there is a decent 1/48 Hurricane on the market from Airfix thought I would do a second version of the Hurricane lighting kit that was on the backburner. Short YouTube video showing features of kit, navigation lights, landing lights, prop and gun fire. http://youtu.be/nrAHK_sGIv8 Was also thinking of one without gun fire so that it can be displayed with wheels down. Let me know what you think. Cheers, Warren
  25. Hi everyone, these are two well-known shots of a Hurricane formation over Egypt that have appeared in numerous publications: http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205126797 http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205190917 I have never known how to interpret the color scheme of the first aircraft. Apart from the fact that the two Hurricane closest to the camera appear somewhat lighter-colored than the rear ones (which might be just due to weathering), the dark area stretching from the exhaust rearwards on GO-G always made me wonder. It doesn't look like exhaust stains because it is far too sharply outlined. Furthermore, the dark area does not cover the code letter (in contrast to GO-J behind it). Can anyone help me? Sorry if this point as already been discussed a hundred times. Ole
