  1. Just posted by Sword on their Facebook feed. The new Photo-Recon Crusaders in1/72! Released in October. SW72149 F8U-1P/RF-8A over Cuba SW72150 RF-8G over Vietnam https://www.facebook.com/swordmodels/posts/771237008133895
  2. Hi everybody; thought I'd sneak in this bust among aircraft builds, as a sort of diversion. It's my first Young Miniatures and only my second bust, lets' see .... Boxart Here's the content, coming in a very sturdy box and packed between two thick layers of foam After removing the casting blocks (using a Dremel and a sawing disc, plus soem refinements with my Electrical Toothbrush Sander), here's a dry-fit (blue tack used to hold it together): And here after priming I've yet to decide what to tackle first, will see... Ciao
  3. Well this will be my first official GB/STGB of the year……..well we don’t talk about the 1/32nd Kingfisher!!! I have been a bit quiet of late, been mega busy with work, plus trying to clear some of the backlog of builds I have, mostly AFV’s….I have a very low completion rate with these, but have a Rhino & Rooikat done and another 3 or 4 more almost, so it has been time well spent when I have it. So this is just a nice straightforward build for me, with Hasegawa’s lovely 1/48th F-8E Crusader being the build of choice for this one. I picked this up a little while ago for the really nice price! It’ll be as close as I can do to a straight out of the box build……….so AM bits will be included …. …..a Wolfpack Cockpit set and Eduard Exhaust set…. …plus Aires Engine Duct Bay and ResKit wheel set……photos to come. The scheme will be straight out of the box, a VF-191 “Satan’s Kitten’s” bird. This will be something nice and simple to get me back into the GB groove……plus I may have a 2nd off-topic build going on at the same time (an Eduard VF-6 Wildcat), so photo-bombs away!!
  4. I've decided on this kit to be the next project on the bench. ( sorry @Stef N. no StuG 😉 ) The Crusader MK.III from border model. @Bullbasket you've convinced me 😁👍 kit comes with a decent amount of sprues, some PE, a metal gunbarrel, workable tracklinks, some clear parts and a nice cutting mat. the workable tracklinks are somewhat intimidating, they are really small. here you see 4 sausage fingers and 2 very small track links. i bought 2 figures from a certain webshop in the far east. They look very good. Nice crisp detail. I think i'll only use one. So i have a spare for the next British tank ( really liking that Tamiya Comet ) Overall this looks like an interesting build. Everyone is welcome to follow, comment etc. All your time and efford is much appriciated as always. I'll keep you guys posted. Cheers! 👍👍👍
  5. this model has been on my to-do list for two years now, I finally got round to making it. It only took a week! It's a decent model, didn't have many problems with it. I'm pretty happy with the result, a good way to start 2023... Next up (probably): RA-5C Vigilante, should look good next to the crusader.
  6. I recently finished up the new Border Model Crusader III. This is one of my favorite tanks and it was quite a fun build, plus it was quite a departure from all of the drab green vehicles that I've been painting lately. The tracks are Friulmodel and the stowage is from Legend Productions, Panzer Art, and Value Gear, along with scratch tarps. It was painted with a mix of Tamiya, AK Real Color, and MRP paints, and weathered with Mig Productions and Ammo by Mig enamels. Comments and criticism welcomed as always!
  7. "When you're out of F-8's then you're out of fighters" goes the saying, and with good reason, but the Chance Vought F-8 Crusader was no one trick pony she was also more than capable of turning her hand to close air support and flak suppression using bombs, rockets and the 4 onboard Colt 20mm cannon and was used in these roles by both the US Navy and US Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. To me some of the most iconic pictures of that war are of bomb laden Crusaders of the USMC at Da Nang in what can best be described as a very "used" condition, very heavily weathered and covered in grime and smoke from the cannons and rockets, lovely! Now I know that there is a very nice modern tooling of the F-8 by Hasegawa but I don't have one of those and they aren't easy (or cheap) to come by but what I do have in the stash is a Revell re-boxing of the old but still good and accurate Monogram kit. Like most Monogram kits of it's era it comes with a quite nicely detailed cockpit and landing gear and fine but raised panel lines, and no I will not be rescribing them as life is far too short and they don't bother me, in fact they can be very helpful with the weathering. So lets start with the usual box top picture; Quite nice box art and a nice scheme on the F-8 on it, an aircraft that was unfortunately lost on a mission over North Vietnam to the dreaded flak. But thats not what I am after this time as I want a Marine machine. Unfortunately this boxing doesn't come with a USMC option but has a rather nice decal sheet with the US Navy option on the box and an Aeronavale machine; The stencils will come in handy this time and I can always use the markings on future Crusader builds should I be able to source them without needing to re-mortgage the house. There were a few Marine Crusader units involved in Vietnam starting with VMF(AW)-312 (despite what Wikipedia say as according to them they stayed State side) who were the first shore based unit and they are one of the units that I have markings for including these on a Microscale sheet; Both very nice options and thanks to my mate Keith (cheers mate) I have these from an original Monogram boxing that did have a USMC option; They are quite old (like Keith) but have been well looked after and appear in very good condition (unlike Keith) and would allow me to build an aircraft from the unit featured in most of the images of Marine F-8's shore based in Vietnam which is VMF(AW)-235 with their star spangled unit markings such as can be seen in the picture below; Lovely!!! A lot of the pictures of Crusaders used in CAS show them carrying twin Zuni rockets on each of the stations on the fuselage mounted missile rails but the machine above only has an empty AIM-9 rail on the lower station, I don't think I have any Zuni's so might go with this option if I can't find/make some. As for the wing mounted stores I could go with a similar option to that shown above with a MER but with only 4 bombs on each one or I could fit a Mk.84 2000lb bomb onto the pylon, until the advent of the A-6 the F-8 was the only USMC aircraft in theatre that could carry this weapon. I have a few references on the F-8 including these; And the kit parts themselves; The kit seat has been built up as have the main wings as seen below; As can be seen a little filler was used when I put these together some years ago but nothing major. I shall now get stuck in to getting the cockpit done with some paint and dry brushing. Thanks for looking in and as usual all comments and criticisms are gratefully received. Craig.
  8. I was lucky enough to see just a few operational French Crusaders in the beginning of the nineties. Especially a display of two of these ancient birds on the airshow of Brustem in 1994 made a lasting impression. The Revell rebox of the Monogram Crusader is a very enjoyable build.. Fit is very good and there's a lot of detail, especially considering the age of the kit. I used a Berna decalset, which was unimpresive: decals are very thick and not in register. I used mainly Vallejo and MiG acrylics for the finishing. Anyway, here are some pictures, hope you like them. Kind regards, Gerben
  9. Finally got these done. build work in progress link is, http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234993879-172-f8u-1-crusader-140444-and-140446/
  10. Since a long time I have wanted to build an F-8E (FN) Crusader. In my search for Crusader kits on the inthernet I found a nice Hasegawa kit, but also the quite old (end of the 70's) ESCI kit. So I decided to build that one as a USN Crusader. This kit is quite easy and straightforward to build, but it has a lot of mistakes. The detail in the wheel wells is quite wrong, and also the shape of the forward fuselage and the canopy are very different from the Hasegawa and Monogram kits, which I guess are more correct. Still, I enjoyed this build very much. I like to think that somewhere around 1980 this kit was bought by a small boy, perhaps together with his dad, but somehow, it was never built. It was lying around for decades, until I bought it. I built it OOB, except for the decals, which are from SuperScale Decals (no48-775). the decals are nice, but gave me quite some headaches, as they were very thin and fragile. Especially the multicolored 'Sundowners' tail I had to touch up quite a bit with paint. But in the end, when I look at the kit I think, 'yes, it looks like a Crusader ' I used Vallejo and MiG Ammo acrylics on my Crusader. The surface detail on this kit is all raised, but I hate rescribing panel lines. Fortunately, the model is molded in quite dark silver-grey plastic. This makes it possible to use polishing sticks (nail buffers) to polish away the layer of FS36440 and show the panel lines nicely. Now it is on to my Hasegawa F-8E (FN).. Kind regards, Gerben
  11. After planning to build an airplane after a while spent pretty much exclusively with 28mm wargaming figures and armor, me and my friend decided to tackle this lovely kit from Academy in a parallel build starting on May 1st. Dalibor's build can be seen here: My original plan was for this to be straight out of the box build, however one thing lead to another and here's the (for now) complete list of aftermarket detail set: Quickboost Flaps Quickboost Ejection seat Eduard PE Zoom set Aires Exhaust nozzle Master Model pitot tube (not pictured, currently in transport) The plan is to build this as the second decal option out of the box - VF-103 Sluggers BuNo 150303/AJ-201 | USS Forrestal 1964 The flaps are pictured after I've already cleaned them as this was a bit of a worry - managing to cut them clear and not breaking/destroying them in the process. In the end it turned out to be a walk in the park and tehy really look ace. Next step will be the actual removal of the flaps that are part of the wing. So this is it for now. Tune in tomorrow for an update of the first day spent with this lovely kit.
  12. Dear Colleagues Here is the Academy 1/72 F-8E Crusader. This is a really a charming kit to build, neither too complex nor over simplified. The only problem I had was somehow getting the undercarriage bay out of alignment with the fuselage. I only discovered this once everything was buttoned up and I popped the wheels on, result one drunken Crusader! Answer was to drill a new hole and re-connect one of the undercarriage legs, a working solution and no harm done. Being myself, the aircraft is loaded with an Aires resin afterburner, resin air scoops (Quickboost), Master pitot tube, Eduard sidewinders (which went a bit wrong), Aires resin ejector seat, Eduard PE set and Aviprint decals. hope these pictures work? VF-162 was embarked on USS Oriskany and with her A-4 Skyhawks undertook some of the most dangerous missions of the Vietnam air war. Regular missions to Haiphong and Hanoi took a steady toll of aircraft largely to AA and SAM missiles. The Commander of VF 162, Dick Bellinger, used this aircraft to down a Mig-21 in October 1966. In that year the carrier groups were running short of ordnance, so F-8 aircraft frequently launched with only two sidewinders rather than four. In the evening, helicopters would ferry sidewinders to carriers in the most need for the next day’s mission! The courage of the aviators on USS Oriskany can be read in the book ‘Bloody sixteen’ by Peter Fey The figures are 3-D printed by Reedoak Regards Andrew
  13. F-8E Crusader BIG SIN Set 1:48 Eduard Brassin BIG SIN (SIN 64840) The F-8E was the most produced version of Vought's famous carrier fighter. The F-8 would serve for over 2 decades with the US as well as the French and The Philippine Air Force. As at the time the F-4 had missiles only it would become famous for being the "Last of the Gunfighters". The Big Sin Set combines 4 other eduard sets at a more cost effective price. Ejection Seat (648388) Inside there is a Martin Baker seat as used by the F-8E. There is the resin seat, head box and seat cushion. The harness and ejection seat handles as well as other smaller parts are inclused on a colour nickel plated photo-etch sheet. A small decal sheet provides seat markings. This is a drop in fit for the kit seat and extra detail will really make the cockpit stand out. Wheels (648387) Surprisingly this set contains the wheels! Two main units and the smaller nose wheel are included. Casting is up to Eduard's usual excellent standards and they will be drop in replacement for the kit. Air Intakes (648301) This set provides two new resin intake scoops for the afterburner cooling on the rear of the Crusader. PE Mounting plates are provided for these. Exhaust Set (648302) This set provides a new resin exhaust, burner ring, and fan, with a small pe fret for the internals. BIG SIN Review samples courtesy of
  14. F-8E Crusader Ejection Seat & Wheels 1:48 Eduard Brassin - For Hasegawa Kit The F-8E was the most produced version of Vought's famous carrier fighter. The F-8 would serve for over 2 decades with the US as well as the French and The Philippine Air Force. As at the time the F-4 had missiles only it would become famous for being the "Last of the Gunfighters". Ejection Seat (648388) Inside there is a Martin Baker seat as used by the F-8E. A small decal sheet provides seat markings. This is a drop in fit for the kit seat and extra detail will really make the cockpit stand out. Wheels (648387) Surprisingly this set contains the wheels! Two main units and the smaller nose wheel are included. The prominent main wheel brake units are also supplied. Casting is up to Eduard's usual excellent standards and they will be drop in replacement for the kit. Review samples courtesy of
  15. Hi, Can anyone shed any light on the afterburner can. I am starting the Eduard F8-E and have the Brassin tailpipe and afterburner can. However, does the afterburner can extend beyond the airframe, or is it within the airframe? I have trimmed it but 1mm remains beyond the airframe. Is this right or wrong. Andy
  16. On 9 October 1966 Cdr. Richard M. Bellinger became the first Navy pilot to shoot down a MiG-21. He was flying an F-8E (149159 AH 210) leading three other “Hunter” F-8s as escorts for A-4s from the USS Intrepid. During the flight they were intercepted by a group of MiG-21s which were the newest communist aircraft and a real leap in technology. Using two Sidewinder missiles, Bellinger was able to nab one of the MiGs marking the first Navy kill over the new MiG-21. Back aboard Oriskany, Bellinger said, "I've waited 20 years for something like this. It was a tremendous feeling.". Cdr. Bellinger was awarded the Silver Star by Defense Secretary Robert McNamara aboard the Oriskany one week later. Now to the kit. Academy's F-8, eh... One of the best F-8 Crusader kit around, and the reputation is not without reason. I could go on and on about it, but I won't bore you guys since you can read all the reviews on the internet. Long story short, this is a build I really enjoy despite several complexities like the main landing gear. The reason why I decided to take 149159 as my build subject is because of the story of Cdr. Bellinger's kill that I read once when I was a little boy. As for the decal itself, Academy didn't actually provide decals for BuNo 149159, so I have to improvise by looting numbers from my friend's F-8C conversion build, and cut out the colourful stars on vertical tail plane decals and in place painted the rudder in yellow so I can get the normal all-yellow stars. Now some of you might notice that orange rusty panel on the gun ports, that was because I followed Academy's painting instruction a little too far and forgot to check my reference back so that's that. Enough banter, now for the (not-so-good) photos taken with my Sony Xperia Z1 phone camera. There will be more photos from my actual camera soon but for now this is what I got. Any comments and critiques would be more than welcomed.
  17. AViS is to release a 1/72nd American Gyro AG-4 Crusader kit - ref. BX72023 Sprues V.P.
  18. Ok so this is my third and final upload this week! I've had three kits all at the same stage since May so am on a concerted effort to get them finished. Eduard 1:48 F8 Crusader, VMF235, 'Deaths Angels' , Da Nang Air Base, Vietnam 1968 Very enjoyable kit this one and the Furball decals were very nice indeed and by and large a good fit although the intake took some doing! This is one of Eduards limited edition kits so has the canopy masks and various Brassin parts to go with it. Paints are Tamiya and Gunze and Alclads for the exhaust. Highly recommended Chris
  19. F-8E Crusader Update sets - For Eduard/Hasegawa 1:48 Eduard Update Set (48925) This is one brass fret which includes parts for the engine burner can, missile & Zuni rails, front canopy, landing gear legs, front undercarriage bay, landing gear doors, skin strengthening plates and the bay under the main wing. Air Intakes (648301) This set from the brassin range provides two new resin intake scoops for the afterburner cooling on the rear of the Crusader. PE Mounting plates are provided for these. Exhaust Set (648302) If you dont want to go the photo etch route of the update set, or you want some more detail then this set provides a new resin exhaust, burner ring, and fan. Conclusion These sets will enhance an already impressive model. Recommended. Review samples courtesy of
  20. My first attempt at doing any weathering . I've tried to make it dusty, rather than beat up, with muddy road wheels. I'm not sure if it works...so any tips and feedback whatsoever are very greatly received. I primed with Halfords grey, brush painted with Vallejo Model Color and weathered with Pinnacle pigments.
  21. Hi all, Firstly, my apologies, these photos are not the best - quickies taken on my phone! This is my Italeri Crusader Mk.III which I have finally decided to call finished after many, many months of on-off tinkering and faffing! It's more or less out of the box although I have made the front fenders a little more accurate, scratchbuilt a rudimentary turret interior with radio (because the open hatch is huge!) and improved the searchlight with a Little Cars lens. The figures are from MiniArt and Resicast. The MiniArt ones are the chap leaning on the front of the tank with cigarette and the seated one, who has a head from the remains of an ancient Airfix Multipose US Marine set and a beret courtesy of an Airfix Multipose British Infantry kit! The Resicast figure carries a 'liberated' German jerry can instead of the original flimsy and is one of the grumpiest looking blokes I've ever seen committed to resin!!! The barbed wire is scratchbuilt as I needed something to put in the corner that wasn't bushes, sand or rocks! Other bits and bobs are mostly from Bronco except for the compo box which is scratched and cast by my own fair hand. I'm not the best figure painter in the world but I'm quite pleased with how the whole thing has turned out. I thought I'd take some quick pictures before my cats wreck it...! I'll take some better ones if anyone's interested. Cheers,Mark
  22. Guys I have but a single photo of this beast, does anyone have more detail, pictures or perhaps a drawing? Regards William
  23. Paul Fisher, from Fisher Model & Pattern (http://www.fishermodels.com/), is actively looking into a 1/32nd RF-8 Crusader resin conversion set. To be followed. Source: http://forum.largescaleplanes.com/index.php?showtopic=48212 V.P.
  24. Hello folks, This is an Aéronavale Crusader maintained in service from 1964 to 1999. As I couldn't find any 1/48 Hasegawa F-8E(FN) or F-8J I started from a F-8E. The main modification was engraving the slats and enlarging the horizontal stabilizer. The cockpit is from Aires and the decals from Berna. The white color on the horizontal stabilizers were Teflon adhesive bands used during the last years. I must admit it is not the most colorful paint scheme for a Crusader but I like it. Cheers
  25. Hi folks, I'll be getting the ball rolling with this Short Crusader; The Short Crusader was built to compete in the 1927 Schneider Trophy competition. It first flew on May 4th 1927 (quelle coincidence!) , but even after several modifications it became apparent that it was going to be too slow compared to the competition so it was used as a hack for the high speed team. On 11th September Flight Officer Schofield was flying the aircraft when he lost control, the control wires to the ailerons had been cross fitted so when he tried to correct a roll, he span into the sea at 150mph. Schofield was thrown clear suffering bad bruising but miraculously no broken bones. The aircraft was recovered a week later when the crossed wire issue became apparent.
